  1. ^^^This, this, this all the way! As usual Kinkaid I agree with you 110%! I had also hoped for that at the beginning of this growth spurt we just finished. I thought maybe Houston is finally going to "grow up" and start taking pedestrian oriented development and how it affects quality of life, seriously. But I was mistaken because alot of the projects this past cycle either stuck to the same old tired development patterns or played the relentless "bait and switch" routine. I'm now doubting that this inner city car-centric mentality will ever change in my lifetime.
  2. Yeah I had the same thought as well. If it's still structurally sound, I could see them renovating and possibly recladding the exterior especially since Midway typically likes to include office space in their projects.
  3. Love, LOVE the idea of bringing more people to live downtown but I'm not liking this building. Too bulky, too beige, too boxy. Reminds me of a modernized version of the unattractive 2016 Main building. At least Hines nearby residential tower will balance things out aesthetically speaking.
  4. Ditto. Couldn't care less because I never watch local news. Haven't for many years unless like Utterly said during floods or hurricanes I will tune in.
  5. So dumb of them to close. We need a proper observation tower.
  6. Um, yeah http://www.houstonarchitecture.com/haif/topic/30280-what-store-was-at-6201-bissonnet/
  7. I am also not able to "like" particular posts because it says "I don't have permission". I've stayed quiet so far on this software upgrade but after being a member since 2005, have to say, the most recent updates appear that they've slowed daily postings. Maybe that's due to a slowing Houston economy, not sure. But honestly, what use to be a daily lurk for me, has now become every few days. Forum feels clunky and slow especially on the mobile format. Not good HAIF!
  8. While Eado isn't Uptown or Kirby, I wouldn't go as far to say it's in a "bad part of town". Honestly, I wouldn't live in such a project no matter where it was located in Houston.
  9. Isn't this the second phase of the expansion? I thought I read that somewhere. I could be wrong. Looking at Google imagery the slabs do look positioned to be some kind of retail.
  10. The building itself came out very nice but the garage facade and placement are atrocious. They could have at least put in GFR on the side facing Richmond.
  11. By golly, who knew trees, flowers and gardens would be so threatening to Houstonians. Honestly, the East End should be kicking itself silly for protesting and passing up on such a positive project. Instead these lovely gardens will now be sandwiched in between a dank freeway and a smelly petrochemical plant. As for "saving" golf courses, I don't understand the nostalgia for them, especially when the local mentality is to tear down almost everything historical in the first place. These gardens will serve the public so much more than any golf course ever could.
  12. Probably moved into a different sub section too as Glenbrook is outside of what is considered the "East End" area.
  13. Ignorant conservative politicians on a "science" committee? What a joke!
  14. No offense, but that is a big part of the problem. That ever popular Houston mindset of being so anti-government regulation of any kind in part, lets these developers get away with building these piss poor projects. And boy did we see quite a few in this last booming period. Local government involvement is the only way to ensure quality architecture and better design standards of proposed projects.
  15. Honestly, now that it's nearing completion, this building does nothing for me, even if that's an unpopular opinion on here. It replaced something that was still fully functional and fairly profitable with another cold, sterile looking office building. Too bad Macy's wasn't incorporated into the base of the building as was originally planned. A renovation of the existing building or a complete demo/overhaul, downsizing the store would have been ideal. Very bad move especially with all the surrounding residential developments coming in. The nearby "Retail District" plan now just appears to have been a knee jerk reaction to the loss of Macy's, since not many (if any) retailers have bitten. Without Macy's or some other large chain anchoring the area, retail confidence went rom being on life support to plummeting to zero and will probably stay as such for the near term. Woulda, shoulda, coulda, I know...oh well.
  16. Sign me up! I'll gladly join the "shrill". Honestly, what IS disgusting is that this issue was open to voters in the first place. Then to only reject it, is a million times more appalling. You can overlook that fun fact all you like but people have the right at this point to fight this how they like, "pitchforks" and all. Even if that means trying to dent the local economy. I say this as a native Houstonian who has lived here all 38 years of my life. Sorry, but the majority of the city's residents should be held responsible for their complete and utter ignorance. Other U.S. states/cities had to pay for their ignorance, Houston should not and will not be immune to that.
  17. Not to mention the upcoming Super Bowl. After this embarrassment, it should rightfully be moved to a more 'progressive' city...El Paso maybe?? Anyway, there's already a growing petition for it. I can only imagine it will gain even more signatures.
  18. Probably because prices are too high in those sectors. While high itself, the EaDo and East End sectors are quite a bargain compared to most areas within inner loop west.
  19. Overhead street lights along Harrisburg seem to have been upgraded to LED lights as well within the last few weeks. The inner neighborhood street lights are still the same orange tinted ones. Is this being done on major corridors only or will all streets eventually be replaced with LED?
  20. Yeah I remember not liking that Walmart much even as a kid. It was frequently over crowded most times. Possibly because it was one of a few Walmarts in Houston at that time. The Whataburger and Cavenders stores are still open. In addition to the Sams, Home Depot, Payless stores, there was also originally a Black Eyed Pea and a Marcos Mexican Restaurant on the fronting out parcels.
  21. Correct Mirrers, the Academy is in what used to be the older, smaller type Walmarts. I remember this well as I grew up in this part of town and frequented this area often. It later closed to open a larger format store not far down the freeway to the east. It sat vacant for a long time if I remember correctly and then Academy and Circuit City subdivided the space and opened shop there. When Circuit City closed, Academy took over the remaining space.
  22. Champs was at I-10 and Federal. It was demolished sometime in the 90's for the Burger King that now stands there.
