  1. I clearly see a Whataburger sign in the lower left hand corner but can't place where it's located. Is/was it in the shopping strip directly in front of the sign?
  2. I think a botanical garden is just what our city needs and as an East End resident I fully support it! I believe the proposed gardens would be a better use of the land and would be more, all around inviting than any golf course. Instead of this public land existing mainly for just golfers, it could be of use for everyone! I seriously don't see how any rational East End resident could be against this, unless they are an avid golfer and use the course to a great extent. Besides, this is the way of Houston, nothing and I do mean nothing ever sticks around permanently, including "historic" golf courses. Let's get this built!
  3. Oh goodness, the good ol' "it's better than what's there now" justification.
  4. How is that? Isn't this the same block where the Nau Center is going to be built?
  5. I am not watching any of it! With Russia's recent anti-gay legislation, the country is socially in total reverse. Similar to the anti-gay legislation currently taking place in the state of Indiana, it's fighting a losing battle against an impending rising tide. Many violent homophobes and bigots have since come out full force in Russia feeling empowered by this hateful legislation. Beating, raping, holding hostage innocent LGBT people, all while Russian authorities do nothing and blame the individuals sexual orientation for the violence. Although Putin welcomed gay and lesbian visitors to the games, he stated for them to "leave their children alone", suggesting that LGBT people are pedophiles. While Sochi's mayor stated that gay people didn't exist in his city. These statements are offensive on so many levels especially coming from leaders. Unsurprisingly, the IOC and many Olympic advertisers such as Coca Cola and McDonalds have turned a blind eye, shunning human rights for profits. This discrimination is unacceptable and is totally supported by the Russian government, which is why I do not support any event where a country such as Russia would be shown in a positive spotlight on a world stage.
  6. The East End Line was tested last week. I saw it many times from out my window going back and forth, honking its horn and going at varying speeds each time. The towing vehicle was only used a few times and afterwards the trains were going on their own being escorted by METRO police cars. Haven't heard or seen any vehicles being tested this week though.
  7. I read that the owners are renovating it to live in and friends of the owners are buying the historical homes. It will be sort of a quasi-historical setting with the six historic homes surrounding it. Funny thing is, I've passed that area many times and I've never noticed that old fire station before! Anyway, it's good to see some interest in Second Ward.
  8. Ugh stars, really! I don't know...this building is starting to throw me hints of the hideous Harris County Civil Courhouse building.
  9. I believe that is the plan (minus the shuttle). Someone at Metro mentioned this awhile back, but their plans are always changing, so who knows. The line will stop at the Altic Station for now. The rail yard for this line is also located before the yet to be constructed underpass.
  10. Yes, Metro sent the email out awhile back. Clearance testing will be happening for the next two weeks. Started January 25th.
  11. On the east side there is also a Kroger on Cullen/Polk, which is close to downtown as well.
  12. Wow! Not another built up disappointment. Hope it isn't true because this building has sat vacant and in disrepair long enough!
  13. Bad news since this sounds like Shell will be vacating their downtown offices...IF this is true and IF Exxon and Shell turn out to be proof of some kind of suburban campus pattern taking root, this is definitely going to be a huge threat to future downtown office vacancy rates and office tower construction. Let's hope Chevron isn't thinking of jumping ship too and doing a suburban campus instead, especially since their proposed downtown tower was recently put on hold. Meanwhile, the City of Houston better up the ante on enticing the major energy companies downtown from flying out to the suburbs or Montgomery County. Not to knock our neighbor to the North, but it would be awful for downtown to end up with empty buildings, high vacancy rates and very little office construction as downtown Dallas.
  14. Heard the loud explosion sound last night around 9:30ish. Live near Harrisburg @ Lockwood as well. It was so strong it shook our house even our Christmas garland hanging above our front door, swayed a bit afterwards. The train tracks along Harrisburg are within view but there was no train on them. I have heard these explosion sounds from time to time only within the past year or so and at different times of the night. Last nights was the loudest I've heard so far.
  15. Don't know about it being "zeta turf" but I also doubt this rumor is true. Yes, there are new town homes in that area and it's been improving, but IMO it's just not enough for any grocery chain to justify building a store. Unless there is some kind of huge secret residential plan for the KBR site, then maybe HEB might consider, but even then I doubt it. Like I commented on Swamplot, HEB isn't really known for opening new "pioneer type" stores in less established areas of Houston. HEB's other lower concept stores Mi Tienda or Joe V's are more probable in this scenario. In fact, Lovett Commercial already has a Joe V's Smartshop proposed for the corner of Harrisburg and Eastwood, which makes this KBR HEB rumor even less true since these locations are so close by.
  16. No thanks! Eastwood and maybe EaDo would fight that idea off tooth and nail. Besides, the East End already has enough of Houston's "undesirable" type places. Concentrating all them in one place would not be a good idea as suggested by another commenter.
  17. I neither love it or hate it but the "EaDo" name is not going away any day soon so the incessant complaining in almost every HAIF thread related to "EaDo" named projects or the EaDo area itself, is frankly, a waste of time. It's just a name, time to get over it and move on because it obviously isn't holding back any progress the area is making.
  18. Two blocks are highlighted on the site location map for the project but the renderings all look to be for just one block. Maybe Nips hotel will be on the other block???
  19. Actually, Fort Bend's long range mobility plans call for the Fort Bend Parkway to eventually terminate at Prairie Parkway near Needville. But I did just see a map, google searching, suggesting the Prairie Parkway would eventually be extended to the Freeport area. So who knows what the full scope of this project may encompass. It's still far off but some residential developers have already designated land for the parkway within their projects, such as Cross Creek Ranch. Both Waller and Fort Bend Counties have been and will be the driving force behind this project. IMO, while it's not a full loop, per say, it definitively appears to be the beginnings of another one for the long range future.
  20. I believe this might be part of the proposed "Prairie Parkway". It's suppose to start near Waller at 290, go south through the Fulshear area, then end out west of Rosenberg, tying into Patton Road. On a map it appears more like a half loop like brijon mentioned.
  21. Early on, there was also a Mervyn's located across Gulfgate on Woodridge. Another one was across from Pasadena Town Square and another one in 1996 at First Colony Mall, which I believe was the last Mervyn's to be built in the Houston area before they left the city in the 2006.
  22. According to the Eastwood Civic Associations FB page, the Houston Botanic Gardens will be discussing their plans to convert half of the Gus Wortham Golf Course into gardens at tonight's Super Neighborhood 64/88 meeting. So I am guessing this Wortham proposal IS legitimate. Then again, this Houston Botanic Garden entity has had proposals for gardens all around town over the years! Originally, it was to be located at Herman Brown Park in Northeast Houston, then in Cullinan Park, as discussed, and now at the Wortham Golf Course. Really, how hard is it to pick a site and just stick with it! For those interested, tonight's meeting will be held at 2002 S. Wayside at 6:30p.
  23. I think that is a SafeWay Driving Center. Someone must have mistaken it for a Safeway supermarket since it has their logo.
  24. I don't know if isolation is going to be a problem. The restaurants already attract a sizable crowd from outside the immediate area. Drove by Saturday evening and alot of people were at both Ninfas and El Tiempo, many waiting outside. I was actually a bit shocked. I think the new esplanade is gonna feed off the restaurant patrons who have probably already seen the construction and intrigued by it. The East End Street Fest should be a perfect fit and a weekly farmers market would be great too.
  25. I agree. A tower like this would be great near Discovery Green.
