  1. Went by West Ave the other night. Seems like they have a lot more retail there but not many people living in the residential area. Anyone know how well West Avenue is doing lease wise?
  2. I still remember the joke the UH Poli Sci professor Timothy Howard had for Cullen... "If he were still alive, not even Evel Knievel would try to take on Cullen!"
  3. But was it ever in bad condition? Edit: I'd rather have that $86M go to infrastructure rather than this.
  4. I certainly agree that it would be cool to see 30 stories. Hell, let's make it 80 stories. That would be pretty awesome too. But based on cost, demand, location, etc. the developers of this hotel determined that 20 stories on this green space would be best for them in this market. And since they are probably targeting functionality, it will probably be an average looking hotel. Not trying to be pessimistic, just realistic. I mean, hopefully I'm wrong on the architecture front but all the construction and proposals that we've seen have simply been for functionality purposes in a growing Houston market with impressive architecture being achieved only if the company has the money. The only exception I can think of at the moment is the proposed convention hotel near Discovery Green. So while it would be cool to see this thing be iconic or something, I think it will likely be just an average building. Either way, it's still great to see more projects in the Houston area nonetheless.
  5. Yup. That's how it goes. Oh well, looks like Khator is stepping up on some of the security on campus. Maybe that will help out cause I've talked to quite a few people who are second guessing about coming to UH now who either currently aren't in college yet or are either at HCC or UH-D. Really don't want that to happen :S
  6. *begin rant* Not if you get shot over there. You know what, this wave of crime on campus is starting to get more and more annoying. I'm not even worried! It's just a clear annoyance. UHPD has always been known to be a joke. I've lost a bike there and tons of other people I know have had things stolen there as well. Am I saying that UHPD should be able to stop all crime? Absolutely not... but I have always considered UHPD to be a false sense of security. I had a camera pointing right at my bike the day it was stolen. What did UHPD say? Oh, that camera hasn't worked in years. YEARS?! That camera is just there for show. And I hope all this crime is a wake up call for UHPD to get their act together cause just like the gunman last night, this stuff is making headline news! And who's going to want to go to a school where there are people getting robbed literally every week for the past month or so?
  7. Went to the Walmart today. Gotta say, the crime was rampant in the parking lot. Thieves we're coming out of the woodworks. The employees were actually BEGGING me for money, it was ridiculous! Some were pleading to be let go to the all-divine Target. Saw a few local store owners throw newly purchased eggs back at the store. Saw eighteen wheelers with signs on their trailers saying "F*** Yale Bridge". It was wild! I can only see this Walmart being for the worse. The highly priced low-selection Target can be our only Savior for the Heights area! Anyway, back to reality, was a little disappointed with the grand opening. Nothing spectacular like at Kroger, but it is pretty good to see all the selection and low prices that I planned to see at Walmart. A lot of security and it was actually kinda funny to see all the anti-cart stealing lines in the parking lot. Brought a few friends with me from UofH main campus and they were all impressed, and they were glad they can finally go to a Walmart that is a lot closer and seems a lot more safer.
  8. Anyone notice the new Heritage Plaza lights? It's basically just white light on the top sides of the building so far. Not sure if they will blanket the rest of the top with lights. Hoping people can get better pics edit: posted this in the right forum, right? I was thinking maybe Photographing Houston but idk
  9. Not sure if this has been stated here but for those that don't feel like searching 87 pages to find it, Walmart opens this upcoming Friday (Oct 26th). Same day as Kroger on Studemont. Interesting competition we have going on here..
  10. ^ exactly. It's quite clear they plan on connecting the two roads. It's probably part of UofH's master plan to have an internal bus route going through the campus. Either way, makes a lot more sense than just have a random dead end. As for the dining hall, I'm mixed. Seems like too much white color on the interior for me. Besides that, it seems really nice and I bet it's going to get really packed when they open up that new housing project across the street.
  11. a datacenter??? uh no, datacenters rarely have large glass around them, no matter the tint. They are usually in closed off rooms with walls all around them.
  12. Surprised no one has updated this in half a year. The bridge is almost open.
  13. Oh so THAT's what they're doing with that intersection. Well, it's about time. That intersection made no sense and was nearly impossible for me to ever get across there.
  14. I drove down the Katy area all the way from I-10 to Brazos Bend Park yesterday and I'm amazed how far they've come already. Anyone happen to have anymore aerials or other photos of the progress?
  15. Well that's just great. Looks like the parking situation is going to get worse with all these lots closed off.. I don't even care if they built a new parking garage. The situation looks bad just based on these pics. Edit: Look, I know this is a necessary evil so that they can build more parking garages, but what irks me about UofH is that they'll just shut down this huge lot (1A) and I bet you they won't create a single new temporary parking lot for the faculty and students. They're just going to make us deal with it.
  16. Border? Well, since it's just another energy building, I suppose the design of it is all right.
  17. Completely agree. Living in the Woodland Heights, I won't have to drive all the way to the Walmart near the Marq*E. The big thing that annoys me with Target and even Kroger nearby is just their lack of selection. I believe an article I read had Target and Kroger around 15,000 to 20,000 products while Walmart has well over 100,000 items. I'm only cautious about the type of crowd it could bring... :S
  18. And to add on to what RedScare said, there is also a sizable Hispanic population here, such as myself, that absolutely loves football (soccer). That population is growing year after year so to say that this could all fall apart once they move into the new place, I highly highly highhhhhly doubt it. Go to the Kentucky Derby if you want to watch horse racing.. Houston's the last place you think of for such a sport.
