  1. I'm excited about this but it sure looks like the Whitco and the Soverign mated and gave birth to this. Anybody else agree?
  2. My bad. Like I said, I was just randomly drawing it in. If it is to the east of the Lyric Center then that would be even better!! I guess I'm all for this tower now. All it took was a visual. I'm good.
  3. I'm kinda so-so on the new terminal. Still looks rather small for a major international airport.
  4. Okay...before any of you fire back at me and tell me what a crazy prick I am, here is a shot of the coveted north facing skyline. I understand that skylines are not planned out. They just develop certain ways and it just so happens, our skyline is kickass. I really have no idea where this building is going to sit but I guestimated. After my very elementary drawing, it MIGHT not look all that terrible afterall given the orientation of the grid in a NE to SW configuration. Is my drawing below even close to reality? IF IT IS NOT, then you don't have to rip me a new one. Just correct me. Thanks
  5. moving right along now. lots of new steel today. NOW it's getting exciting...
  6. I agree 100% with montrose1100. This will stick out like a sore thumb when coming into town on 45s. Couldnt be a worse location. Hate the building. it's going to look awkward as hell.
  7. Looks like we finally are starting to get some vertical action going on the south end zone. I'm seeing more and more steal going up over there. Anybody else noticing this?
  8. Sounds silly but I wonder if the trees don't play a part in the relocations of all these energy HQ? Makes for a nice backdrop and a more comfortable, cozy place to work. Not to mention the proximity to the Big Airport, the beltway, hardy and 45. Not to mention the higher end residential areas such as Springwoods Village and The Woodlands that can offer great schools, big/new single family homes, safe neighborhoods, ect. I may be off the mark but does make me wonder.
  9. The windows that Alicia blew out were thanks in part to gravel roofs that are now out lawed. The wind picked up the gravel/pebbles and they became projectiles. In Ike, much of the window damage was confined to the Chase Tower due to wind dynamics around that 30-ish story tower in front of Chase (don't remember the name of it). If you notice, the window damage is confined to the lower 40 stories stories of the building---almost identical to the building in front of Chase. The windows that you would have thought would blow out (higher up ones) remained pretty much intact. Given another hurricane, much of the window damage should be limited to only a few hundred I suspect as most of the highrises in Houston are built with hurricanes in mind. Caveat: Houston has never had a category 4 or 5 hurricane hit with maximum fury. Everything I mentioned above may very well go out the window (pun intended) if we are unlucky enough to experience that. Wind decreases as a function of speed over time. Not # of miles inland. So if you have a category 4 hurricane (140 mph at landfall on the west end of Galveston (has to be west end or even a bit further south due to the location of the right front quad) racing inland at 15 to 20 mph, you could easily have winds in excess of 140 to 150 knots at the tops of those buildings...then you throw in Bernouli's principle (canyon effect) and you have a serious problem. Let's hope that doesn't happen. I can assure you, you are not prepared to witness what happens to Houston in a worse case scenerio.
  10. I miss Jay. I was fortunate enough to go see 'Tonight' in LA back in July before Jay left. I watched Jimmy's 'Tonight' and it's a yawner. I'm thankful because now I can go to bed earlier.
  11. I'm beginning to wonder if they'll have the south endzone completed by the end of August. I monitor the cams every single day and I don't see how they are going to add the equivalent of the north end zone in 5 months. Seems as though time is ticking and it is ticking fast. There is nothing there except concrete forms and slabs. Anybody know when the south end zone is going to go vertical?
  12. Dude, you didn't have to snap the person's head off. Geez. Houstonboy, I agree. I can see the concern as it has happened before where something was torn down and nothing ever came of the land. Cough, Astroworld. Cough, Bank of the Southwest Tower. I'm sure there are other examples.
  13. Houston is a $500 million dollar tv market. Our DMA (designated market area) is 10 out of 210 markets. The only markets bigger than ours are as follows in this order: NYC, LA, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Francisco, Boston, Washington, Atlanta then Houston. The top 10 markets are the most coveted. It's where the majority of the money is in tv news. ABC 13 (KTRK) is an O&O (owned and operated) station by ABC. They have notoriously been #1 for a long time in this market although in recent years they're share/rating points have come down significantly to be more in line with the other competitors. KPRC Channel 2 has struggled for years with ratings and has usually always been a bottom dweller. However, recent ratings books over the past year or two have shown a marked increase in their ratings often times competing for #1 or #2 in many of their newscasts including their morning show. KHOU Channel 11 has usually always been the runner up to 13 but as of recent, their numbers have slipped. They often compete for #2 or #3. FOX (KRIV) has had good days and bad. Rarely are they #1. There are approixmately 800 metered boxes in the Houston metro area. Trying to sample an audience of nearly 7 million people is difficult with only 800 meters. This has long been a point of contention with some of the stations. Neilson Ratings, which is the main 'go-to' for ratings is responsible for keeping track of who watches what. However, a new guy is in town 'Rentrak' which is able to sample all tv's that are on via a signal inside the tv itself. A good rating in Houston might be a 3 or 4 share. Each rating point represents a certain amount of households. I'm not sure what the number of households/point ratio is, but one point might be 60,000 house holds. Don't quote me on that. Most of the time, the stations fall somewhere between 1.5 and 3 rating. As far as turnover, yes, it is very common for anchors to come and go although turnover in a top 10 market is usually pretty rare being that the jobs are very, very lucrative and are extremely competitive to achieve. Once there, you try to stay there unless they don't renew your contract. A bit of insider knowledge for ya.
  14. Ugh. I hope it falls through. To me the north facing skyline is the best view we have and any building built in front of the BOA building (700 Louisiana) or the Pennzoil buildings will be a soaring wall of concrete and steel to mask the view I like best. This is crummy.

Preach. I'm not sure why Houstonians feel so inferior to Dallas. I think it's badass that they have Qantas. Houston prolly won't ever have the privilege. They really need to get Terminal D updated and quick. I'd like to see other big name carriers come in here like All Nippon Airways (Tokyo), Swiss Air (Zurich), LOT Polish Airways (Warsaw), Air India (Delhi) or Qantas (Sydney) to be competitive with Chicago's O'Hare. Even Johannesburg would be sweet. When is Terminal D's expansion going to get underway anyway? Have they even selected a design or architect?
  16. Is it just me or is this tower 'lost' in the midst of everything else. When driving along the west loop or down the southwest freeway, you really have to be looking for it to see it....at least that's been my experience.
  17. This is always the longest part it seems....getting the foundation down and the first floor. Seems they've been working on the lobby area forever.
  18. Wow, and another big high rise, too! It's about time The Woodlands Mall caught on to what other malls in Dallas and even locally at Memorial City already do and that's put parking garages in. The mall parking in The Woodlands is pitiful and that's being polite.
  19. Anadarko lV? What info. do you have on that? The rendering that came out of the new 20+story building across from Lake Robbins, is that supposed to be Anadarko lll?
