  1. That's what I'm thinking (and hoping). That way, even though it has taken such a long time they can still have a nice "completed ahead of schedule" PR at the end
  2. Yesterday I noticed "they" had marked up the sidewalk along W Alabama with orange paint and lined it with those little orange flags. All of the trees also had some sort of green string/tape around them... Is this some sort of usual utility stuff on a vacant property? There was also a guy walking around in an orange vest. I know it probably means absolutely nothing, but the markings on the trees were a little concerning. It could have been that way for weeks, though
  3. Wow... That will kill Greenspoint. The article says they lease 2 million sq ft there Edit: So I looked it up and there is more office space in Greenspoint than I thought. However, I used to work for XOM and still visit their offices at times - just seems like they are biggest presence by far
  4. I saw Peaches a few weeks back, as a friend had some free general admission tickets. He had actual seats but elected to stand down with us as you are so much closer to the band - the balcony actually looked pretty high up. If you think the concert will be crowded I would say it's not worth it, but we had a pretty good time depite standing for a couple of hours as you can get pretty close to the band. The drink prices were absolutely ridiculous, though. $7.50/domestic bottle in the foundation room. We wound up buying the big cans out in the main area for marginally better pricing
  5. I think it's already been around at least 6 months... I've been there a handful of times on Friday/Saturday, and it was OK - but that was months ago I went there a few weeks back for a Sunday night football thing and it was pretty dead, but I took off early. It definitely made me wonder how much longer this place has left
  6. I walked through a few weeks back and was under the impression that the construction equipment was related to the road work on Kirby. Maybe they are just using the lot for storage?
  7. HCAD shows two structures, so I'm guessing the demolition isn't the actual house HCAD
  8. I tried to look back today and I do think there are some windows facing the parking garage. The only units with a real view that I could see would be those on the top floor - they have balconies that appear to be above the level of the parking garage
  9. So what's the catch? Why wouldn't other developers currently on hold pursue the same kind of solution? Breaking ground on this now seems like terrible timing, but what do I know? There are already so many rental options in midtown, and Camden Travis will obviously open somewhat soon
  10. I like that they've done the front in brick, but the side reminds me of a cheap hotel Did The Reef actually have that great of a view? I've never been in there, but it's on the first floor and it already had that parking garage in the way
  11. Wouldn't those be fairly far apart for one ways? I don't have a particular problem with it... Widening the roads doesn't really seem to be an option (and I'd hate that for W Alabama). I wonder if there could be a similar option for Shepherd, too, as it has similar problems between Allen Parkway and 59
  12. That's right by my house... Anyway, sounds like they were out cruising for a victim - I seriously doubt they live anywhere near there, so I'm hoping it was just a one-time, random thing. Scary, though, as sometimes on weekends we will be out into the early morning hours. I wonder if they were all pellet guns? A terrifying experience for that poor guy, either way I've known people to be robbed at gunpoint in other parts of Montrose (close to South Beach), but nothing quite like this. It always seems to be someone driving by in a car
  13. One of my earliest memories in life is the day my mom brought home the Thriller cassette... I guess one of the reasons today's news is so shocking is related to the nostalgia I feel for the 80's - when he was truly the king of pop, and when that glove and red leather jacket were actually "bad." Well, at least to a kid, and to more than a handful of adults. For some reason it just seemed like he would always be around It all seems silly now, but so does a lot of stuff from pop culture in the 80's... All I know is that when I saw the headline on TMZ, I was definitely hoping that they had it wrong. RIP, Michael. As I grew older I always felt sorry for the man - sure, a lot of what happened to him was self-imposed, but for all the fame and fortune he had a pretty unenviable life towards the end.
  14. It's not on their website anymore. That location was why I had originally signed with Bally's to begin with years ago...but I switched to 24 hr fitness just before the midtown location opened. I recognize some people at 24 hr in midtown that used to be with Bally's, so I would assume that played a part BTW, anyone interested in a $15/mo premier Bally membership? I've kept it as a back-up for a while, but will definitely be dropping since the West U location has closed
  15. At this point, I just hope they save the trees...I'm sure the value of salvageable materials is insignificant to Dilick, but it would go a long ways to ease the perceived animosity (at least on Houston forums) towards him. I'm not sure the general public is aware, or even cares about what happens to WV - it seems many just view it as a slum, with little or no knowledge of its history True about taxes and insurance - though until this year, the value of the "improvement" on the property was nil. I guess the insurance could add up, especially if it takes quite a while to unload the property. I assume it will in this market
  16. From a developer's standpoint, is the lot worth more with trees, or completely bulldozed? I would think with trees, but I have no idea about the cost of removal of so many like at Wilshire Village. If someone is to eventually develop a new box-style apartment complex there I guess it would be better to start with an empty lot I'm just hoping that the demo will JUST be the buildings for now, giving a future developer (should Dilick sell) the opportunity to use the trees in his plans The whole bulldoze and sell thing doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Sure, maybe he can sell the land for more once clear of the old buildings, but he's having to pay for the demo. He could either incur the cost now and sell for more, or just sell it w/ buildings at a slight discount - wouldn't it pretty much be a wash?
  17. Uh oh...A "Demo Apt/Sewer" has been issued Edit: It's listed under a "Plumbing" permit. Is this an actual demo permit? Project Details Project No: 09033561 Date : 2009/04/16 00:00:00 USE : DEMO APT/SEWER DISC Owner/Occupant : *WILSHIRE VILLAGE APARTMENTS Job Address : 1707 W ALABAMA ST 77098 Valuation : $ 0 Permit Type : 12 FCC Group : Demo; Apartments (5 units or more) Buyer : SHELLY CHARLES Address : 10606 SAGEBRIAR 77089 Phone : (281) 914-7295
  18. Yikes... Per hcad, looks like the appraised value went up another $6 million this year. From $5.4 million to $16.7 million since 2005? The Wilshire Village shopping center across the street has shot up from $2.8 million in '06 to $7.5 million this year. Seems a little extreme considering that there hasn't really been that much change in this area the past few years It would sure be nice to see Wilshire Village turned into a park and the land under the shopping center redeveloped instead
  19. Noticed that the 99 cent only store on Westheimer is indeed closed now - had a store closing banner on it and a dumpster out front. I also saw a small bulldozer parked on the old Martha Turner lot, but it didn't look like much of anything New building down the street still appears to be empty. At least they finished up the front and made it a little more visually appealing
  20. Now wait...so I guess it'll be better for the townhome residents along Washington to walk ~1/4 mile to Washington, hook a left and head another mile down to the non-existent (future) grocery store? I think it's much more likely neither area will be all that urban or walkable any time soon
  21. Looks like it could get pretty interesting when a train comes through
  22. Thinking about it more - does being labeled a fire hazard mean that they have either have to be brought up to code or demolished? Interesting that there really isn't any media coverage on this as of yet. Granted, it's not front page news like the unending coverage of the "octomom", but you'd think at least the chron would give it a mention considering the plight of the residents
  23. Great...the only thing better than an old, decrepit apartment complex @ probably 10% occupancy is an old and abandoned decrepit apartment complex. Do they have to fence it off or anything, or will we have the pleasure of watching it rot even further? It seems extremely unlikely that anything is actually going to happen here for quite some time
