  1. Do you have anything to back up that statement? I think fossil fuels will remain our primary source of energy for at least 50 years - google around and I think you will find most tend to agree And why should Exxon rush into alternative fuels? I'd prefer them keep doing what they do best for now Edit: removed a link
  2. Is U-verse not an option in your area? I wonder if that's why Comcast really isn't having to compete $-wise there
  3. Sounds like that song from the movie Juno. I don't mind them, but they'll need more than commercials for me to switch back
  4. I just don't buy it...maybe "b/c you're part of the guerilla gay bar group", but not explicitly because they were gay. I know from first-hand experience (with my friends) that Union does NOT discriminate. That's good enough for me... I think enough sensible people on this board see through the BS. I think a similar-sized group made up of any cross-section of people (well, mainly men) would have encountered the same issue, especially if only 50 or so were expected to show up Looking back on my comment about how many people were there - I was mistaken in that it was probably more like 40 at 9:15 or so when we first got there. I really wasn't keeping count, but it was probably about twice that by 10 or so. Room for a few more, yes, but it sounds like the group outside had an "all or none" mentality that could not be accomodated
  5. It wasn't empty at 10:00 p.m. I'll concede that it wasn't exactly a packed house at that point, but I would think there were at least 40 people in there. Heck, I had about 10 people in my group alone
  6. From the bar's facebook: He also mentions that they do indeed have a 117 person capacity. I don't remember how many were inside at 10 p.m. or so, but it was most certainly not empty. Sounds as if this was simply poor planning on the part of the "Guerrila Gay Bar" organizer Appears that there is an actual news story on the matter: KHOU Story
  7. It was apparently pre-coordinated, but it sounds like there was potentially some miscommunication on the girl:guy ratio issue. For all we know whoever had the discussion with the owner failed to mention this in the invites...either way, we're probably never going to know the full story. I'm going to keep going there and so will my friends because we know the owner and know that this isn't a valid issue at this paricular bar
  8. This is a load of crap - I was actually there inside with 4 of my gay friends since they thought it would be fun. I know the owner and from my understanding, he said it would be OK so long as they kept a certain guy/girl ratio...hardly uncommon. I was even told this before the event started, as we showed up at like 9 to avoid the rush. I never saw the line actually form, but from what I heard it was a long line of guys (like 150?). Gay or straight, that many guys showing up at once to any club will have problems getting in. I obviously wasn't present for any discussions with the owner but can assure that my gay friends have never had any problems there
  9. You were apparently right on track. An update from swamplot: Link Not bad, but too bad about the parking - I'll take it over a vacant lot for sure. Should be a nice add for the area when (or if?) it happens
  10. LOL...I didn't see anything nearly that organized (as in chairs, tables, people sitting). At the time, the downstairs was closed...we went straight upstairs via a door on the right to what I can only describe as some sort of strange storage area (parade props? lol), and I remember going up on the roof on the scariest metal spiral staircase ever. In the middle of the roof was a busted kiddie pool. It was most definitely not an actual business when I was there... The chess comment in the other thread is pretty funny b/c I remember a bearded man (LONG beard) in a flowing robe playing chess in a random bathtub
  11. Thank you! I was trying to remember that name...this was like 5 years ago or so Edit: OT, but I see an existing topic on it here. I remember the homeless chess playing, scene from pulp fiction version of the place
  12. I'm assuming this is same place, but I remember I went there once (entrance was in the storefront to the right of Dean's) and had one of the strangest nights of my life. I don't remember any accessible windows, but I definitely remember thinking it would be really easy to fall off the roof
  13. LOL...I was going to say something along the same lines, but then realized I actually know one of the girls I'm guessing these people MUST know the owner or something, right? Reign already has 300 friends
  14. I've been there once...it was nice early on, but I agree the "later" crowd there was annoying. Then again, that crowd seems to be the one that floats around, so I'm sure they'll be moving on to Manor or Reign soon. Maybe it's better during the week?
  15. Looks like it could get pretty interesting when a train comes through
  16. There's already a myspace for "Manor on Washington", though with little detail: Link My "shiny shirt" days must be over, because I have no desire to go to any of these places. I've been to most places along Washington and it's starting to remind me of downtown back in 2002
  17. Thinking about it more - does being labeled a fire hazard mean that they have either have to be brought up to code or demolished? Interesting that there really isn't any media coverage on this as of yet. Granted, it's not front page news like the unending coverage of the "octomom", but you'd think at least the chron would give it a mention considering the plight of the residents
  18. Great...the only thing better than an old, decrepit apartment complex @ probably 10% occupancy is an old and abandoned decrepit apartment complex. Do they have to fence it off or anything, or will we have the pleasure of watching it rot even further? It seems extremely unlikely that anything is actually going to happen here for quite some time
  19. Beauvoir Wikipedia Damage from Katrina was apparenty overstated in the media - it reopened last year
  20. For whatever reason, I obsess with looking at old photos and then checking with live.com or google for present day views. Was the large part of that building (past the entry) demo'd in the past for a parking lot?
  21. That sounds a little premature...at least I hope. That fugly empty lot right in front of the complex probably isn't a huge selling point - at this rate, it will probably remain that way for quite a while. It would definitely be nice to know how well they are leasing... I wouldn't be surprised if they are having a tough time considering the price and the amount of other new complexes in the general area (Alexan on Westheimer, Alexan Upper Kirby, the new apartments in Greenway)
  22. Could there be some sort of fire-proofing between units? It's obviously each unit is not completely fireproof Awesome interior shots, BTW. Outside of that first pic, it's not at all what I expected of the condition of the interior. It would definitely be nice to collect some of the fixtures before the bulldozers come in
  23. I dunno....a lot of "if"s in there. Maybe they'll turn it into park Did anyone else notice that Ruchi's name is no longer there? Now it's just some generic "Taqueria & Grill" or something. The fact that there are large "For information" signs posted all over the property also seems to confirm that there will be a commercial component as well
  24. I seriously LOL'd at that But anyway, all I can say is....it's about time! I love that old complex, but hate looking at it like that. There's zero chance that someone would come along and actually fix it up - as is, it's more of "negative" to the area than anything. I just hope the new plans, whatever they may be, aren't scaled back (at least $$ and quality-wise) due to current market conditions. I can't imagine how that wouldn't be the case...but then again, I can't imagine anything actually happening there in the near-term. Dunlavy is looking to be pretty dense along that stretch if a new mid-rise is in the works
