  1. HCAD shows two structures, so I'm guessing the demolition isn't the actual house HCAD
  2. This is definitely very fishy now that we have a name... Publicity stunt, perhaps? Guy with a high end auto salvage business wrecks a Bugatti into saltwater, on video, and (of course) makes national news? Seems too obvious for insurance fraud, lol
  3. I didn't see a pelican, either. Seemed like a rather smooth ride into the water. Still seems odd that someone actually has a video of it...Bugatti or not, that's pretty random! Either way, if you can afford a $2 million car then you probably aren't too shaken up about driving one into the water...well, except for making the news. I wonder how insurance works when you get to a vehicle of that value? I also don't understand why you'd let the engine run submerged until it died
  4. Sheesh...I saw that construction had stalled months and months ago...the common drive is always full of shopping carts now. What's bizarre is that it doesn't look like that much work was left, though I guess the interior could still lack quite a bit. Strange that they've just sat for so long. Wouldn't Bank of America be trying to sell them off at this point?
  5. I tried to look back today and I do think there are some windows facing the parking garage. The only units with a real view that I could see would be those on the top floor - they have balconies that appear to be above the level of the parking garage
  6. You're right, it's every other week - they didn't pick up any of ours on the first pick up date two weeks back. Wasn't aware of the recycling rewards, but sounds like a pretty cool deal... After two weeks our recycling container was full and our regular garbage was probably 1/4 of the usual
  7. Neartown Association has posted a link to the ULI report in case anyone is interested: Link
  8. I live on Branard just west of Wilshire village, and we just got our wheeled container a couple of weeks ago - I like the thought, but now we now have two full sized garbage containers to contend with! Anyway, as a former non-recycler, for some reason having the larger bin has definitely changed the way my wife and I handle trash... We got some pamphlets from the city regarding the program, but we were also a little confused as we're not in one of the neighborhoods listed on the city's website. To add to the confusion, they didn't pick up the recycling on the first scheduled date last week. However, they did pick it up yesterday
  9. So what's the catch? Why wouldn't other developers currently on hold pursue the same kind of solution? Breaking ground on this now seems like terrible timing, but what do I know? There are already so many rental options in midtown, and Camden Travis will obviously open somewhat soon
  10. Now wait...so what do they refer to the red area as? I've heard North Montrose, but honestly, I think they are referring to it as the north part of Montrose and not a separate entity or whatever. I've always considered it Montrose but definitely on the fringe...and not what people would necessarily think of when the neighborhood comes to mind. I guess the confusion isn't all that unusual on the edges of a neighborhood since it's not like there is an obvious change across a single street - my part of Montrose in 77098 is often referred to as Upper Kirby/Montrose (or just Upper Kirby). Of course, that seems to be a har.com only trend Either way, the difference between the neighborhoods here is much less than, say, the difference between the Heights and Washington Ave. I think you'd find people taking both sides there as well...it's clearly not The Heights to me, but again, what does it really matter?
  11. Honestly, I would too for the feel of it (and heck, the name) but I always see Shepherd listed as the boundary between the two areas... Man, with all of these cuts we'll soon just be left with the Montrose/Westheimer intersection - no wonder so many of the chron.com readers think it's a craphole
  12. I drive thought quite a bit and I just don't see it - outside of some of the new "luxury" complexes, the streets north and south of W Gray are largely indistinguishable. Heck if that's the definition then the entire River Oaks shopping area is out, and I've always considered that part of Montrose.
  13. I guess I mixed up the north side with Neartown's borders? Is there a difference? I don't even know... A lot of the development up there north of W Gray has been termed "North Montrose" on here - didn't know if it's really distinct enough to call it's own neighborhood. I just assumed it goes up to Allen Parkway A lot of the comments on chron have gotten pretty nasty. I'm going to assume it's mostly folks in the 'burbs Edit: This has already been discussed on swamplot
  14. Both of those museums are within the boundaries of Montrose
  15. From American Planning Association: Link Chron article I'm not sure how noteworthy this list is, but nice for Montrose to get some recognition. Wasn't it named one of the most walkable neighorhoods in the U.S. last year (or year before)? Some of those chron commenters really need to get out more...
  16. Hmmm...I'd need to do some field work first, lol Are Citizen and Blue Label Lounge still around? I never had any desire to go to Citizen, and wasn't all that impressed with Blue Label the two times I've been. Actually, it's been a few months since I've been out to any of clubs on Washington, so surely the trendiness of many places has worn off by now? Some might still be pulling in crowds, but I'm sure the crowd has changed...guess that's not necessarily a bad thing. Are any of the clubs 18 and up yet? lol I wonder if we will really see a new hot area any time soon (and where) or whether we will just see a changing list of bars and clubs along Washington
  17. I wonder when we're going to get the first wave of bar closings? These guys seem late to the game I went to Sawyer Park last Sunday and noted that many of the bars, etc., on Washington seemed to be doing pretty good business, though. As for the crowd - unlike the previous poster, I didn't see any pretty people...but definitely a lot of obnoxious drunks that should have left when the game was over hours earlier. Staff was pretty good, though. It makes for a decent happy hour place but you're basically forced to valet I don't get this "Roosevelts" place. If you're caterings towards the "River Oaks crowd," why not put it closer to River Oaks? On that note I went to a soft opening of the Red Room (above what was The Brownstone) a couple of weeks ago and was pretty impressed. Perhaps this is all just a sign that I'm getting older, as I would have loved the Washington Ave scene back when I was 23 and single
  18. There are actually 3 there now counting the one in the Barnes & Noble - there was something on the chron about it last week. Surely one won't make it...right?
  19. I like that they've done the front in brick, but the side reminds me of a cheap hotel Did The Reef actually have that great of a view? I've never been in there, but it's on the first floor and it already had that parking garage in the way
  20. I watched a good UH team play at Robertson last year and it was pretty d$mn empty. One sell out doesn't warrant an expansion, let alone a new stadium...
  21. I'm still waiting for QT to come to Houston (if ever)...I told my wife about them before I ever took her up to OK, and now every time we visit we have to stop at one
  22. Wouldn't those be fairly far apart for one ways? I don't have a particular problem with it... Widening the roads doesn't really seem to be an option (and I'd hate that for W Alabama). I wonder if there could be a similar option for Shepherd, too, as it has similar problems between Allen Parkway and 59
  23. I don't know...this place is close to both to the train tracks AND to a jail. I guess it's a conventient location if you need to walk to a bail bondsman
  24. That's right by my house... Anyway, sounds like they were out cruising for a victim - I seriously doubt they live anywhere near there, so I'm hoping it was just a one-time, random thing. Scary, though, as sometimes on weekends we will be out into the early morning hours. I wonder if they were all pellet guns? A terrifying experience for that poor guy, either way I've known people to be robbed at gunpoint in other parts of Montrose (close to South Beach), but nothing quite like this. It always seems to be someone driving by in a car
  25. I've been to all of the places on Washington, and I know some of the owners so I never wait in line. Let's face it - it's douche bag central at present. In another couple of years it will be as "great" as midtown. The best hope is that some of the current or opening bars will wind up as restaurants or more desirable places... It will never be as bad as it was 5 years ago, but at best some of the bars will be replaced by restaurants or other decent businesses. Washington Ave is generally ugly and undesirable to those with $$$, but the changes have definitely been for the better. I was looking to buy there 3 years ago, but quite honestly, all of the progress was already built into the price The big question is, what's the NEXT big area? Again, it will not be the area that big money flows to, but the area that the thirty-thousand millionaires flock to...
