  1. The seawall parking is now profitable. It's going to take a while to generate enough profit to do anything meaningful, but it's a start http://www.khou.com/news/local/Galveston-seawall-parking-profits-now-top-83000-258907681.html I've seen and heard some discussion that one option would be to ban seawall parking on the south side along the beach. Presumably parking would then be on offsite lots or parking garages using shuttles. I'm not sure I see that working out that well but it would be awesome to clear up that row of parking for some added space for pedestrians and landscaping along the seawall itself. As it is now you've got people zigzagging around on bikes through the crowds, and just imagine if the seawall were lined with palm trees. One area with sufficient width for some landscaping is the Fort Crockett seawall park and the recent improvements look great
  2. Nothing here. I tried digging around some but it's still listed on the CRBE website as for sale - not sure how often that is updated though Actually, now that I look there was a recent permit for tank removal (7/14). It would be better if it's part of the new complex but I honestly wouldn't mind a new gas station there
  3. I haven't been able to dig up a rendering, but it looks like a new complex is going up at 8700 Main St. I saw "Haven at Main St" referenced in the latest planning commission meeting and a building permit was issued for a new parking garage yesterday Buyer for permit was Troy Bell of the Guefen Companies - they apparently specialize in multifamily properties. Judging by their project list they mainly do garden style apartments but this tract is only 3.4 acres Edit: Guess it is just a "plan review fee", not a building permit
  4. pg. 125 of this document http://issuu.com/hokmarketing/docs/tall_buildings___portfolio On pg. 128 you can zoom in and make out a few store names so definitely some sort of retail component Edit: Just googled again and 7200 MAIN MIX-USE DISTRICT, Houston, TX, U.S comes up on a LinkedIn profile as something a summer intern worked on in 2013 at Gensler, not HOK?
  5. I think the school actually owns its land still - in 2008 it shows a change to "Taeken Ltd" whereas all of the other parcels are 7200 Main Corporation. I could be wrong though I live in Old Braeswood and would be thrilled if this is built, maybe because I'm not going to be in the shadow. Not sure all of my neighbors would agree, though. The area south of TMC really needs something to kick start it and wow, this would be it. I've been tracking this plot for a couple of years now so excited to actually see a rendering of some sort. Even if this isn't what gets ultimately built at least it shows some ambition
  6. 2500 Dunstan is only ~2 acres. Does that mean that the land at University and Greenbriar is available for future mixed use as well?
  7. I lived near Branard and Driscoll for 6 years and suffered through the crappy streets and sidewalks - we moved last year and immediately afterwards all of the sidewalks were redone (ugh), and I see on the ReBuild Houston website the streets in the same area are due for an overlay this year. So at least parts of Montrose are getting some attention
  8. I've gone a few times over the past few years but only because it's convenient to my parking garage at work The cover seems a little ridiculous for what you actually get, a bunch of knickknack stands and corporate-sponsored booths you see at pretty much every downtown festival including "iFest" in previous years. This year the theme was Australia, though the only thing I saw related to Australia was a single booth near the main stage
  9. The Burj Al Arab and Burj Khalifa are 2 different buildings. Burj Khalifa (previously Burj Dubai) is the tallest building in the world, the Burj Al Arab is the 7 star hotel Burj Al Arab was out of my price range but we did eat dinner at the Al Muntaha on the top floor. I can't speak to the experience in the rooms (which I am sure is top notch) but to be honest I was expecting more with the entrance and lobby for "7 stars". I guess if you spend enough time over there you wind up seeing countless fancy hotel lobbies
  10. FWIW, I've got a meeting scheduled in the building for after June 1
  11. Yes, you are correct. The western most portion of Old Braeswood there are just the homes off Glen Haven and Blue Bonnet. Of course, my house is one of the few actually obscured by trees. We've got a massive willow oak I assumed was planted when the house was built but maybe it's older after all Anyway, Old Braeswood POA has a color aerial of that same area in the mid 50's showing the neighborhood had really filled in to the north around the same time Knollwood Village got going. I really wish there were some more of those color aerial shots of the area http://www.oldbraeswood.com/images/obair.jpg
  12. I walked by this over the weekend and I didn't see a for sale sign - the sign was for "Pinnacle Construction Industries" http://www.pinnacleconstruction.com/ so the project could still be a go?
  13. Thanks for the pics, Larry! Definitely an upgrade for the area - I hope this trend continues We don't shop at that Kroger's often, but when we do I always wonder what those apartments are right next door. They look reasonably well maintained, but the low slung nature of the complex and the lack of landscaping have always made me think it was some sort of low income apartments. Just realized it's a Residence Inn? Crazy... Seems like it would be prime for redevelopment
  14. I think you can only view it on the desktop version - I didn't have to download or update anything. It didn't show up for a few days for me... Anyway going back to October 2007 it appears to show the Macy's sign. You can click on the image in the timeline to switch over to street view from that time period
  15. I'm guessing others have noticed this, but just in case you haven't google street view now has a time lapse feature. It was announced earlier in the week but didn't become active for Houston until the last couple of days. Downtown and other major areas of course have the most available historical data (back to 2007). 2007 of course was pre-Ike so it can make for some interesting comparisons in places like Galveston...or of course in areas that have undergone significant development in the last 7 years
  16. I hate to revive an old thread, but does anyone know of someone reputable who actually works outside the Heights that does on-site work? Sash guy apparently won't do it
  17. I caught a glimpse of a small rendering up along Main St. earlier tonight - maybe somebody with better reflexes can take a pic. All I can say is that it incorporates brick and was maybe ~5 stories, so nothing unexpected. They are definitely going right into construction mode Edit: Larry, per some google searches it looks like the old complex had 240 units. That's more than I would have guessed but it was spread out over 5.7 acres
  18. I go to London every year for work, and really love it. I do agree, though, that it is tough to figure out the nightlife there. I've been to a lot of not so great places paying the equivalent of $20 a drink and then yeah, you get out and realize the tubes are no longer running... The worst was when we were staying out of town and discovered Victoria station was closed, so they had buses running over to another station so we could catch a train back. That was at like 3 a.m., didn't get back til like 5 Anyway, I finally had a good time last year - went to a club at the W hotel, then hit another couple of decent spots. The secret, it seems, is to have a friend that's a local that actually lives in London and goes out frequently (and who is willing to go with you). Otherwise it's just a guessing game... I usually stay in Mayfair which seems pretty decently located for finding nightlife
  19. That would be my guess. Redevelopment here + something on that Coventry Development parcel on Main St would make for quite a bit of activity in the area
  20. I've noticed the last few weeks that The Crossing on Kirby apartments (7600 Kirby) were boarded up. Today it looks like they were stripping out all of the appliances, etc., which were just sitting around the parking lots... Anyway, finally looked it up on hcad and ownership changed to Millennium Kirby LLC back in September The address to Millennium Kirby LLC is tied to "The Dinerstein Companies", who are behind several Millennium apartment developments including Millennium High Street on Westheimer Demo permits and some sort of plan review fee for a new apartment building are out there, so it looks like something is definitely happening.... I'm going to keep my expectations realistic on the final product, but nice to see some activity around that area
  21. That shot needs more power lines... I've been through that intersection many times and guess I never bothered looking up
  22. Maybe something is happening on this particular plot sooner than later... Guess we can assume more apartments? http://swamplot.com/developers-of-springwoods-village-working-out-kinks-for-something-near-the-med-center/2014-01-17/
  23. Just recently noticed how closely this resembles the Audi dealership along Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, which was apparently opened in November last year and billed as the world's biggest Audi dealership. Reading the article about the opening of the one in Dubai, apparently this is one of Audi's new "terminal" dealerships
