  1. Depends where you are at. I imagine in Egypt, Fertile Crescent, Turkey , China or the Indus valley 78 years isn't much. A drop in the bucket. Or for that matter Europe. Houston on the other hand.
  2. Weren't two more residential towers planned for downtown? One, I believe, was north of Minute Maid Park, the other around Toyota center. A twin of Camden residential.
  3. It is quite an urban setting with all the highrises, the convention center, hotels, sport stadiums, and and the park amenities. Great place to relax and people watch. Hopefully the city will built the "W" hotel to add to the area.
  4. Blimey! I guess I'll hav to now travel to England to see the Cotswolds.
  5. From 1900 to around 1915 they were the 4th largest city. Had a remarkable World's Fair. Their population peaked in 1950 and has since fallen over 50%.
  6. Thanks for the information. One odd thing though, the list leaves out the Allen.
  7. Do not claim to be an expert on cancer. I believe there are over 100 different types of cancers. The cell has a mind-boggling complexity and amount of information within it. They are the basic units of all life and they are very adaptable. The book "Emperor of All Maladies". gives some idea. I hope I'm very wrong, but I think this fight is going to go on for some time.
  8. I say chaps won't get that sort of Mayfair class until it's called "Ye Olde Londoun House" ! Pip pip.
  9. My wife and I stayed at the Moscow Radisson. Beautiful hotel but a favorite of the folks you mentioned. Read about Paul Tatum, the American businessman who was a partner in the hotel. Gunned down during the day in one of the busiest train station in the world. No "witnesses" of course. No arrests made. Nasty folks.
  10. Haif says 42 floors, Emporis says 43, and this fellow says 44. Anyone know how to find out what the number actually is?
  11. I just saw a youtube video of the skydeck views ( there are several) from the One Vanderbilt in NYC. It is impressive. Got to pay though.
  12. Can always look at it somewhat philosophically. People are going to hate something, it seems to be in our DNA. Hating buildings is fairly harmless. I can't stand the Tour Montparnesse in Paris due to its location, but still love Paris. One can adjust.
  13. By your desription it appears as if Skansa owns all of block 251 and 3/4th of block 276. This is good news. Skansa seems to get things done. Hopefully it will be arrevderci to those two surface lots in the not too distant future.
  14. You are getting your wish with Texas Tower, Discovery West and Brava. Very glassy and classy.
  15. Wonderful plans and design. My only fear is location. Unless some shuttle is provided the number of office workers going there for lunch is going to be minimal.
  16. What happened to Farshid Moussavi? I thought she was designing it.
  17. Hate to sound like Arthur asking about the moose, but where is the head?
  18. There is also a 10 story going up at Main and Jefferson and some other apartment north of the baseball stadium. Still, I think a few years back ( 6 or 7 years ago) there was more construction.
  19. I fully remember. I was worried block 98 was going to be a repeat. It all worked out well. The site occupied by 609 Main advertised a high rise apartment which never happened, but look what is there now.
  20. You are very correct, as we found out three days after we moved to our house bordering Lake Houston. What a surprise that was. Don't see that in Kansas.
  21. Downtown surface parking lots may have to be placed in an "endangered species". Their boom times were the 1970's through the 1990's. They appear to be disappearing. My concern are the hideous high rise garages which bludgeon the eye, such as one can sees at Main and Walker. The ideal would be high rise garages such as the one at Preston and Louisiana.
  22. Urban dream? I've heard numerous accounts that SF has in large quantity, fecal matter, urine smell, trash, vagrants, and pick pockets. It has natural beauty and some great architecture but I don't think that's enough to cancel the negatives. It sounds like a disgrace of a city more than an urban dream, especially if your middle class or have children.
