  1. I know it's slightly early... but between conference expansion talks last week and the coaches poll this week.. I'm all psyched up for the only sport that really matters. It's effin College Football Time !! I've set up this years College Football pick'em over at ESPN. Group name: Haif 2011 and as usual, password : Haif Playing with confidence points this year. Please have your profile or team name contain your Haif name so we know who the competition is. I'll bump this as the month progresses so we get our usual dozen or so signed up. The more, the merrier. If anyone has any thoughts on conference expansion, teams over/underrated in the coaching poll, early Heisman favorites, anything relevant to the upcoming season.. bring it. I know it's slightly under 4 weeks away.. but opening weekend is going to have 5 consecutive days of college football. How awesome is that !
  2. Both are well suited to our climate, but from hitting up the google, It seems the fact that Bermuda grass is considered an invasive weed might be the reason it is used more for controlled areas like turf athletic fields, and less in front yards where it easily invades flowering beds and other areas it shouldn't - driveway cracks, between pavers, etc. Also.. Bermuda doesn't grow in shade very well. http://www.chron.com...ts/5900466.html http://www.gardengui...muda-grass.html http://www.houstonla...h.com/grass.htm Zoysia seems to be the 3rd choice for Houston.. don't know much about it but it appears to have the looks of Bermuda without the invasive nature. All that being said.. I believe St. Augustine is the cheapest and most readily available, so you're probably not going to convince most Houstonians to change I will agree with you in personal preference for the Bermuda though... barefoot, there's no comparison.
  3. painting orange.. esp more burnt in color, has been known to reduce property values by an average of 6-7% I kid.. but I agree with the others, it looks good as is.
  4. Glad I'm not the light timing engineer in charge of that section.
  5. You never click on the source links do you. There is an answer to your question.. but I'm not going to cater to your laziness. Click the link. Hell, you don't even have to read, your answer can be found in the pretty picture.
  6. I think graphically they just chose one of the two colors to show once the lines joined.. they could have gone the other way. But it has always been the case that both lines would share track into downtown.. as opposed to East Line users forced to switch trains at the Bastrop Station.
  7. Main St bridge to be closed for the next 14 months... http://blog.chron.co...eet-for-months/
  8. ???? Every line but the Uptown line will directly intersect with the Main St Line. http://www.metrosolu...1068/387347.pdf http://www.metrosolutions.org/clients/1068/367099.pdf
  9. Patience is a virtue.1 You need to learn to get your tickets sooner to have more seat selection. If you're traveling alone.. See if there are any single seats available near the front of the plane when you check in. If you insist on ranking passengers to see who merits getting off first, I can think of numerous other groups that would go before you. 1. Women and children (obviously) 2. People with connecting flights. 3. People that need to really use the restroom. 4. Me. 6. Clowns. 5. People without carry-on luggage. 6. People with carry-on luggage. 7. D-List celebrities 1Except on houston freeways.. get out of my way.
  10. Cool video. Not that you'd do this with your nice camera, but if you have a spare point-in-shoot, I find fastening it to your front grill not only makes for a lower and cooler angle, but it really cuts down on shaking as well.
  11. I can see it working for a small cafe with outdoor seating - like here. or a bigger restaurant ...like here... but only if they use the containers as building blocks for bigger areas or volumes. But that rendering is showing mostly stand-alone containers and nothing more than 2 deep configurations. 15-16' of depth doesn't give you lots of design room for a sit down restaurant. ..or retail.
  12. here it is... http://www.houstonarchitecture.com/haif/topic/24368-hive/page__p__379081__hl__hive__fromsearch__1#entry379081 I would love to see a serious mega shipping container project go up, like the ones they have several places in Europe. But I just don't see that happening with this project.
  13. There is a thread on this already for when they were proposing this for up in the Acres Homes area. Their website has been up for a few years now with that same rendering. Since a more realistic rendering that address, for starters, their mega parking issues hasn't materialized, this tells me they're not closer to ever getting this project off the ground.
  14. I'll get working on the following mashup for your next vid... Ozzy - Crazy Train Megadeath - Train of Consequences O'Jays - Love train
  15. It's not a subway.. it's an underpass.. Same thing we have all over the city. And reading chron comment after chron comment about flood potential.. that constant level of buffoonery makes me so furious i wanna go start punting kittens.
  16. Deja Vu all over again. They have westheimer blocked off between dunlavey and park - about 3 fire engines along with numerous police and mobility response vehicles present. WESTHEIMER RD BLK PARK ST492V07/26/2011 06:13Building Fire1 E508, L016, E007, E016, A016, E008, RH017, ARS759, ARS750, ARS760 EDIT: ABC13 - it's at the art gallery next door to Agora..... http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/local&id=8271219
  17. Effin A. A -1 would be less painful than realizing a post of mine piqued the interest of you and your catch phrase.
  18. Was seeing your Foley's the highlight of your trip ?? I still find your retail anchor-tinted glasses to be very odd. You're the only haifer I know that seems to measure and value a neighborhood or area by its big box stores. It reminds me of when I tease a friend for being stuck living out in Katy, and they respond with "We got a Krogers, a Walmart, an AMC, and 4 Olive Gardens all within 5 minutes; What more do we need?"
  19. I initially had a longer response, but I slimmed it down till I could see who your examples would be. You hit the nail on the head - all the multi-millionaire philanthropists invest in Universities, Arts, Medical, Libraries, Humanities. You can add Ima Hogg and M.D. Anderson to your list. Nationally, it's the same - Carnegie, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Gates - their return on investment is seeing growth in cultural, medical, or scholastic endeavors. I can't think of many example of philanthropists who's only goal is too invest in the architecture and aesthetics of a city for the sake of improving the city, especially when it involves commercial projects. The sort-of exception I can think of, though it isn't isolated from the above reasons, is T Boone Pickens. Rich alumni like himself who's main goal is to improve their alma mater, but in investing in academics of a small school in a small town, are also investing in the architecture, aesthetics and image of the college town.
  20. Same could possibly be said for the Senate's gang of 6 plan since it's already established the House probably won't go for it. If the HoR and Senate are controlled by different parties, then this could be said about 90% of the bills out there. Not that I hope this new plan doesn't pass.. I do.
  21. Isn't any entity, whether an individual or corporation, who decides to build here instead of elsewhere deciding that Houston is the best place for them to build? So wouldn't all new projects in Houston be investments in Houston?
  22. Kinda appropriate.... ok.... not really. Seen on failblog.
  23. I can't find the thread for Discovery Green.. ( one would think the search terms "Discovery" & "Green" would get you there).. but I vaguely remember when seeing the initial site plan years ago being disappointed that it didn't take up this block too. Figured the farther the park stretched into the core, the better.... but what we got turned out well. BTW... Just press the HAIF Easy Button... BAM.
  24. I don't understand this statement. With the advent of online banking, I'm not sure how many people go through the trouble of comparing receipts to monthly statements anymore. If you look at you banking app or hop online a few times a week, you can just ignore monthly statements. For the technophobes who rectify their checkbook register with their Quicken database and their monthly statement.. How does cash purchases make it easier or any difference at all ? Why would you not need to bother keeping a receipt if you pay with cash, but if you pay by check, debit or credit ( all of which you can track instantly online, or get record of purchase at the end of the month) you all of a sudden do need to hold on to the receipt for a month ? Imaginary -1s for all you cash using neanderthals.
  25. Oh come on.. ya could have at least added the "chica chica chica" of the train and the occasional steam engine whistle for our auditory pleasure. Just kidding.. good job.
