  1. You should stop talking to fools.. I side with the majority of UH grads who has never once had a person ask to clarify which UH i went to. There is only one UH. Any educated person that hears UH should assume the main campus. If UH-D wants to distinguish themselves.. whatever. but as a UH grad.. i dont feel their identity crisis affects me one way or another.
  2. dillards - international house of haggis... Have you started yet ??
  3. Judging by the quotes in the article, its obvious the regents are avid HAIF readers and were well aware of our dislike of the chosen name and the reasons why. Thank you regents. At ths time I would like to submit Craig Biggio University for consideration.
  4. Hallelujah !! Thank God the decision makers at the System level have brains and veto power. University of Houston System regents Friday decided to wait for more suggestions before choosing a new moniker for UH-Downtown, concerned that
  5. Yes... instead of confusing it with a school that its 2 miles away, people will now confuse it with a school that is 1 mile away. Bravo, University of South Texas.. Bravo. Hey wait... South Texas College of Law should now sue the University of South Texas for copyright violations and devaluing their good name.
  6. This now has to go to the State Legislature for approval, right? Are they going to rubber stamp it or is there any chance of them stopping this retarded move?
  7. I'm 99% sure there used to be a International House of Bagpipes Haggis where Dillards now stands...... Map It !!!!
  8. I go to HTU....H-Town University... There... That would be less confusing than University of South Texas
  9. It's laughable that they are willing to consider names or acronyms that will confuse them with 1 of 3 possible other local schools when their entire reason for changing names was to eliminate confusion. I go to South Texas... Which one... The one downtown... Uhh, Which one... What a joke.
  10. HCAD shows ownership of Richmont Square changing in '88 from Menil to Richmont Corp... Is Richmont Corp a menil-owned land holding company? Also.. HCAD shows UST as owning some of the land the Menil is on. Is Menil-owned land and UST-owned land one and the same ?
  11. They go on and on about confusion with UH is real and the name must change, then they turn around and come up with this list as a solution? Really ? Their school is 2 miles or less from a UST, and TSU, and a South Texas College of Law and this is the best they could come up with ??? Guess they aren't creative enough to stick to their guns on not naming it "directional" U. Allen College of Houston. Allen St. University.
  12. York is East End, right? ... Where does York cross Westheimer ?? If you mean Westheimer and Yorktown... it does have its own thread somewhere... Its a Hotel concept by Starwood called Aloft.
  13. I agree.. Like Cullen. Naming it after Cullen or any other prominent Houstonian adds a small degree of sophistication not found in bi-directional or Houston _anything_
  14. The same can be said for the thread originator. If this had been a Smart Car or scooter dealership instead on the same area of land, I doubt you'd be raising a stink even though from an Urban livability standpoint, it would be an equal waste of land. Well.. Thats alot more rational than villifying the landowner's choice of business and ranting that it should be torn down so Congrats on the personal growth.
  15. Houston Main Street University Discovery Houston University Houston City Centre University maybe they could sell the naming rights for the whole school... Thats never been done before. Minute Maid University of Houston
  16. Fine.. I overreacted. I agree that even moderators should have the right to their ridiculous and biased ideas.
  17. What a waste of a thread. Your overtly biased viewpoint is blinded by the reality that this intersection has been a car dealership for over 20 years. If you're so offended at the irony of a car dealership being across from a LRT station... blame Metro for coming in 2nd. Tear it down... The station. Also.. I think we have the right to expect a little more out of our moderators. Someone that should be a little more fair and nonpartisan. Not someone ranting with such a biased view.
  18. UT was ranked 15th among public universities and in the top 50 overall in US News' last College Rankings. Either you are incredibly biased, you were scarred as a young child by a longhorn, or you have no idea what you are talking about.
  19. 16 of the 28 schools in the Texas System and A&M System benefit from PUF (well, according to Wiki... more according to your pdf).. though I don't know what those financial benefits entail.. so if you say they are greatly limited compared to the big 2, i'll take your word on it... that makes sense. I think the 1 time confusion of setting foot on the wrong campus is insignificant compared to name recognition on a resume. I think just because the confusion hurt a few doesnt mean its not a good thing. Anyways.. name change is done. Lets hope you're right and enrollment and perceived value go in the right direction.
  20. I didnt mean small as in size or enrollment.. i meant smaller as in recognition and perception. I also didnt mean to imply different schools in a system are confused with one another... i am saying there is value in being associated with a bigger System. This doesnt apply for UHD and UH........ but UT-Arlington, Prarie View A&M... numerous others... for the last 20+ years, these schools have had access to the PUF of UT System and A&M System. These schools have more resources as members of the states 2 flagship systems. I think the name recognition and perceived value in a degree from UTA over Lamar or Sul Ros University is what it is because of the association to a bigger System with lots of resources.
  21. You make good points, Vines.... But i still think UHD benefits from the confusion/association in getting students there and UHD students benefit from that University System tie-in on their resumes. I also think any University name change hurts that school's image. History, Longevity are two attributes that contribute to a school's gravitas, image, and perception by prospective students. Maybe I'm wrong and others disagree.. but take Southwest Texas.. that's their name for 30+ years, then one day they change to a generic name Texas State... am i the only one that instantly thinks that was a bush league move to make. I think where we differ in opinion is the perceived value of attending this University. You think it's ready to stand on its own, I do not. I don't know much about UHD programs, standings, rankings. But I imagine thats true of most people looking at resumes too. I do think it helps to have a school on your resume that is take seriously by potential employers. Having a tie-in to the 4th largest University System in the State helps. Having a new University name that has never existed before this point in time hurts.
  22. I don't think i had even heard of UHD until 03-04.. and I was under the impression that UHD, unlike UH Clear Lake, was more of a branch campus and not a separate school under the same University System. I think renaming it is a mistake. IT would be a mistake for UH ClearLake to change their name to something with less ties to UH. It would be a mistake for Texas A&M Kingsville to distance themself from the A&M University System. Likewise for UT-Arlington. These are small schools that get their recognition from their apparent and obvious link to their University System. Students don't just pick a school for the education, but for the value of having thats school's name on their resume. And while there's a difference between having the flagship of a University System on your resume vs a secondary institution in that System... having that name recognition is only a positive. I think UHD is cutting its head off here.
