One less strip center with a giant billboard-like sign, one more beautiful building. Not only is this building modern, but it has dimension (isn't a box) and incorporates multiple elements (isn't all glass). Also, they understand how important it is to place the main showroom close to the Westheimer street level. Everyone driving/walking by will be able to get a glimpse of the inside.

Do they usually hold off till the end to demolish the sign or are they planning on keeping it?

From what many have said on here, sign permits are very hard to get but old signs can be grandfathered. So most projects keep the old sign and continue to pay the permits for them and when it's time to put the new one in they just get a sign company to create new graphics.

It will almost certainly be repurposed for the new business. You rarely see pole signs taken down as a result of new construction, as they were grandfathered when the city updated its sign ordinance some years ago. Under the current regulatory framework it can be difficult, expensive, or not possible to erect a new sign - it's far easier to repurpose an existing one. The classic example is the old Cactus Music sign at W. Alabama and Shepherd, which was repurposed for the Whole Earth Provision Co. when the previous incarnation of Cactus closed down and moved out.

Edit: @hindesky beat me to it.
