Houstonian in Iraq
Does anyone know what's going on at the block surrounded by Caroline St, Prairie St, Texas Ave, and San Jacinto St. View from the corner of Prairie St. and Caroline St. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a272/ig281978/P1010076.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a272/ig281978/P1010078.jpg View from the Texas Ave. side http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a272/ig281978/P1010082.jpg Is there something going up? Is it just another surface lot? There is a trailer on the block, but it's behind a fence and didn't look like it was open to the public.
YakuzaIce
I hope it is not a surface lot. Here is how the block used to look so it is already nearly all parking.
texasboy
Disgusting. I bet it is parking.
RedScare
That block is owned by the Christ Church Cathedral. Next door to the demolition pictured WAS the old Palce Boot Shop. The church is clearing the block to build a parking garage and offices for the church. Construction cost is approximately $18 million.I have not seen plans, so I don't know if the offices will be beside the garage or on top of it. I also have not heard whether there will be any lease space in the structure. I will update if I hear anything.

They are much better than surface parking, and in some cases they make them look like buildings so that they blend in.
RedScare
Here is a drawing of the plans for the block bounded by San Jacinto, Prairie, Caroline and Texas. It is called the East Campus on the drawing. http://www.christchurchcathedral.org/yes/default.asp?id=134 I realize that this gives no concept of what the finished product will look like, but blame Christ Church, not me. Gary
Well at least it's not a surface lot.
YakuzaIce
So the whole block will now be a seven story building and a courtyard? Well that is alot better considering most of the block is surface parking right now.
RedScare
A littlr more searching revealed a video that was made for the fundraising effort. The link is here. http://www.christchurchcathedral.org/yes/default.asp?id=136 Some of it is what you would expect from a church fundraising video, but Sections 6 & 7, the garden and parking lot, show a little more detailed look of the project. Considering what that block has always looked like, this will be a huge improvement. In fact, since I office 2 blocks away, I hope the parking garage is affordable. largeTEXAS
I agree. And the garden looks great!
firstngoal
I don't work Downtown, but happened to be there this evening and noticed that there was a construction fence around the perimeter of the block (across Texas from the Federal Detention Center). Does anyone know what is going up on this important block? Thanks in advance.
N8TIV
yes, apparently the church owns a large majority of that block, if not the whole block. A park is being constructed there.
Subdude
This was merged with an existing thread on the project.

I'm with you... the new project looks fantastic! It will add a great new amenity on Texas Avenue - and a strong link between some of the attractions on Main Street and Minute Maid Park. And as much as I've read of people complaining about different new projects on this website, I'm surprised more people haven't noticed this small, but important, project. It's initiatives like this that will greatly improve the livability of downtown Houston... not a W Hotel or the latest trendy project that might be cropping up in another city. I'd sooner live near quality green space in a safe downtown area than be near the fashinistas at the latest martini bar. Kudos to Christ Church for being good neighbors and making the downtown core better!

h-townsfinest
i have to agree, this is gonna really be nice, its details that make a city great, not so much the big fancy stuff, without detail you dont notice the big picture, i give it to Christ Church Cathedral, they are doing a great job downtown

ssullivan
I walked past there today on my way to the Astros game and was amazed with how great the finished product looks. I hadn't been down that stretch of Texas in several months so it was quite a change for me from what I was used to seeing there. I think the Church and Episcopal Diocese did an amazing job with this project.
KinkaidAlum
My mom raved about the new Christ Church additions last week on a family trip. I cannot wait to see them. As an aside, besides adding a nice new building with much needed green space to downtown, the services the Church offers are amazing.
