  1. Randall's VS Safeway Randalls was a non-union store that didn't sell beer or wine. The easiest way to get rich in Houston in the 70's and 80's wasn't by owning an oil well, it was by opening a liquor store next to a Randall's. Safeway is a unionized store, so when they bought out randall's, Randall's went union. Not so great service combined with higher prices combined with HEB opening up kicked Randall's ass. Randalls used to be locally owned, but not anymore. HEB is San Antonio owned, that's close enough for us My first job was as a bag stuffer at Randall's Number 7 at Wilcrest and 59 when I turned 16. We had at least 10 sackers on Saturdays and Sundays, sometimes more. nowdays, you're lucky to find two.
  2. Gertner's bar didn't create any noise- I never heard it even when walking outside the thing, and they never completed the outdoor portion- the stairway inside is incomplete.
  3. they need to expand the garage, if they can. 8 floors isn't enough.
  4. Everything on that side of the block except Forever XXI will have to be razed, and they'll dig down for the foundation, too. the fun part will be that the other half of the block, where the bookstore used t be and where NRG is now, will have to stay open, so, y'all will get some GREAT closeup shots from me as I walk in to work, and stumble home afterwards... lol the circular sky walks will stay- that particular one is over Fannin, and part of it is inside NRG... The developers of the Pavilions once said they are the one thing they are the most proud of...
  5. Oops...link did not work. I'd there a mid who can delete the previous post, and this one, too?

  8. I have a good friend in Portland who is in real estate. He sells garages that have houses attached to them, caters to the car guy market
  9. ^^^ including my two favorite bars in order to build the hotel, part of the existing structure will probably have to come down- the part next to Forever 21 where they Skyhouse leasing office currently sits.
  10. more public land... i read that as a place for bums to sleep, and for dogs to crap....
  11. if it is, it's going to be really, really nice
  12. yep. The bathtub was it. One level of basement was all the Foley's had. They had to dig down another 10' for the foundation for the new tower, and for the crane anchors
  13. an old friend did an engineering survey on the foundation of that building a few years ago. He said it was so thick and so huge that after a nuclear war, the only things what will survive are cockroaches and that slab.
  14. have you seen the cops today? The only thing they can run down is a donut... lol
  15. the author of the article is a little fixated on rail, which won't work outside the loop here. (the east end rail line is a boondoggle)
  16. my mom had a 78 Plymouth Volare with a 225 straight six. The base motor itself was excellent, but the pollution controls on the thing were garbage- it was so bad whn the commercials came on with KHAAAAAAN singing Volare, we sang butt****me....... LOL my first car was a hand me down from my dad, a 67 Dodge Coronet 4 door. It was the first car he ever bought new in 67, when I was 3. I still have the sales receipt from Hedgecoke Motors in Amarillo, TX we used to pile 10 people into that thing and drive all night. That's when I discovered my first truth in life- the number of friends you have (when you live in the middle of nowhere) is directly proportional to how well your car is running... LOL
  17. Progress! check out the shiny new facade piece.
  18. I have tried to get the scaffolding at BoA too, but can't get the zoom.... what are they doing over there?

  21. they covered up the brick facade by gluing the new facade to the brick. it is the glue that ruined the brick facade. well, the glue and the ugly stuff it was holding on to the brick...
