  1. this is a great part of town - it may be slowly turning over in some aspects, but there's a concerted effort for preservation, too (sixth ward, Bill White's new initiative). as far as 002, *gag*
  2. that would have been the Dowling Theater (2110 Dowling) can't find much about it, though edit - there's a mention of it here: http://eyeonthirdward.mfah.org/reflections.asp?pnum=3
  3. this doesn't sound much different from what's already in place - except for a little more bribery
  4. what kind of focus? to many, the heights is already "developed" so to speak...so that leaves redevelopment (tear down, rebuild) or remodel/renovate...
  5. hmm - i can't think offhand what else they would be - maybe they appear to be small since the big telegraph boom wasn't until the mid 1860s or so (western union) and the service was still small here... fwiw, this is an interesting article about telegraphs in texas: http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online...es/TT/egt1.html
  6. i had noticed it a little while looking through older sanborn maps - the d's (dwellings) were quickly vanishing around the boom of the twenties, and the cbd as we know it now was forming
  7. from the Chronicle: http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/archive....id=2005_3866524 Homes, offices and two places of worship by or inspired by University of Texas graduates (and Frank Lloyd Wright devotees) Frederick MacKie Jr. and Karl Kamrath. Highlights: Homes at 8, 48, 59 and 67 Tiel Way in River Oaks 804 Friar Tuck and 11214 Hermosa in the Memorial area
  8. http://pdinet.pd.ci.houston.tx.us/permits/index.asp#top from there you can search, buy, etc
  9. permits indicate that there is remodeling to the main house and guest house, and that the garage was demolished wasn't this place remodeled in the late eighties? guess it wasn't to mr. steele's liking
  10. i had dreamed up something a little worse than what the pictures depict, but still...! i would say that from really far away (and perhaps if one was nearsighted sans glasses) it would look sort of midcentury with the roof tilt and minimal front-facing windows - that being said, it also could appear to be a cinderblock-reinforced cardboard home

    Robot Garage

reminds me of the pigeonhole parking of days past
  12. ^i'll echo danax's sentiments...! so often we see neat houses like yours in the demo permit stack thanks for finding the forum and keep us updated!
  13. i hope groundbreaking is still set for this summer...i go by this vacant (grassy) plot of land every day, and had wondered when this was going to happen (if at all).
  14. Although the nightclub reopened Friday night immediately after the vice squad left, Tafesse said he will probably shut down or move. "Everybody's leaving downtown and going to Midtown," he said. "I don't plan on staying here long." geez - i have never even heard of this place, other than the bad press of course. looks like a classy place though, at least from the motto
  15. what an odd little cul-de-sac. thanks for the local.live.com link - gives a whole new perspective to the place!
  16. wow - thanks. main st. looked more lively - and there was a walgreens! and people! (not loitering in view, that is) that's insane! would be neat if you could narrow down the time frame a bit - someone could dig up the old chronicle picture/article
  17. neat compilation - alot of those photos from Story Sloane's collection were taken by Calvin Wheat, who is someone that i would say rivaled Bob Bailey in houston photos (at least Wheat's photos are here in Houston, though...)
  18. "The Milkman Still Delivers" delivers milk and also other dairy and bread and meat... http://www.the-milkman.com/ delivery charges are $15 for once a week, and twice per week is $25, though, plus the inflated cost of goods...
  19. here's the link to the Harris County block books: http://www.tax.co.harris.tx.us/blockbooks/default.asp
  20. is that astroturf on the screened-in porch?!
  21. here's the contact page of the people responsible for this stuff: http://www.newquestproperties.com/ContactUs.asp hmm...looks like they've been leaving their mark over texas since 2001...niiiiice
  22. and use this link to do quick searches: http://www.cah.utexas.edu/db/dmr/ i hope more of them are eventually available in digital form it's not really an exclusively bob bailey search, but everything i have happened to search for returned bob bailey's photos
  23. thought this was interesting - can anyone date the picture from the car maybe? http://www.cah.utexas.edu/db/dmr/image_lg....iable=e_bb_0953
  24. i'll try to post a higher res scan later, but back when it was a holiday inn, at least from the front there was only the logo on the garage: it's a relatively small space for a name, anyhow
