  2. thank you for posting that! always interesting to read about the personal histories of these places
  3. isn't this the old peden iron and steel warehouse? http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online...s/PP/fpe14.html
  4. neat, thanks for the image maybe it reads 1925 instead of 1915 - i've pretty much got the date narrowed somewhere between april-december of 1925
  5. there are some older threads around here: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...?showtopic=2338 http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...?showtopic=1352 but nothing hopeful in the works as of now
  6. the circle at mecom fountain (main/montrose) can get a little scary during peak times heading north on main because of the overflow of cars waiting to turn left onto montrose. eventually two of the three lanes end up at a standstill, which is bad for the folks that come screaming around the corner.
  7. there's an older article linked in this post, but the link died here's a recent chronicle story about it, though - http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/business/4575191.html the last sentence makes me like the idea even less
  8. yeah, i wonder how much goes into the permit issuing process that, unfortunately, is true - i know that changes in the streetscape are inevitable, but sometimes they're a real downer
  9. Houstonist Light Rail Pub Crawl / Texas Independence Day party March 2, 2007 5:30-10pm Begins at the Flying Saucer, 705 Main St. (at Capitol) Get location updates via Dodgeball http://www.houstonist.com/archives/2007/03/01/light_rail_pub.php http://www.houstonist.com/archives/2007/02/14/all_aboard_hous.php
  10. yep - walmart is reserved for "oh ____!" situations
  11. reviving the thread for a quick question: i know there are several folks here who have great resources of information on houston's history - after seemingly exhausting all of mine (and just about driving myself crazy), i cannot find (or even narrow down enough) the date of the opening of this hotel. i have checked: -sanborn maps, but the one that might have helped had a huge blotch on the date (but i think it was just the year, anyhow) -county block books (nothing) -Texas room (narrowed it down to maybe April-deccember of 1926) -microfilm of Houston Post and Chronicle (it's insane - even if there was something published about it, i am sure i would have missed it after going through the first few months) soo, if anyone can at least narrow it down a little bit more, or suggest additional resources, that would help bunches thanks in advance!
  12. i just got back from chicago (loud and busy all of the time) - coming back to home, it was serene and peaceful - obviously downtown isn't dead, but we sure do have an interesting street scene for a "large" city
  13. is this the location (above the arrow)? or am i totally off?: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=1600+smith+7...m=1&layer=t
  14. but of course. the original poster, however, appeared to be content with what he/she has and not with the potential changes
  15. jesus...i guess thanks should be in order that you don't have the money (and that the owners would hopefully never sell to you)
  16. sizzler's coming back - http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/stories...63&hbx=e_du
  17. i stick with bibas these days - food and selection is good, and they're always open. used to frequent niko niko's, but even with the recent expansion it is more of a headache than anything else (although the food is good, and i also heard they have a great hamburger ) will have to check out alexander the great
  18. agreed - they should have had a happy-hour-time groundbreaking guess i'll be checking the news sites for now
  19. i love the lobby of the mellie esperson, but can't remember the elevators - anyone have any pictures? here's the lobby, from decopix: http://www.decopix.com/New%20Site/Pages/Im...s/terrazzo.html
  20. Thanks for the pictures and information! The one off of Sheldon that is completely grown over kinda reminded me of the big sneezy turtle from the Neverending Story of course, the doors on it were too hard to open with bare hands
  21. my goodness - i returned from a short trip to denton/fort worth yesterday, and the winds were terrible. denton was covered in orange!
  22. interesting went by there...the one i saw on sheldon is much more grown over than the ones on appelt, although those are covered with graffiti and have been local dumping grounds (but the one on sheldon had a bunch of machinery littered around it). sheldon - front back machinery appelt - front back
