  1. here's one from opening night: more pictures from bob bailey: link
  2. the huge dense crowd is what makes the parade what it is - spread it out downtown, and that'll be lost. and corporate sponsors are nothing new
  3. oh, you're probably right about that, but it would still be nice in my opinion, instead of the new stuff
  4. interesting pool... http://search.har.com/engine/indexdetail.c...mp;backButton=Y
  5. it would be great if some folks could do more flipping/rehabbing in the binz/southmore/blodgett area between main and almeda. there are some nice medium size and large homes that are either starting to decline while inhabited (slumlords) or others getting bulldozed and replaced with townhomes...
  6. i lost the toolbar with firefox 2 and i can't get channel 2 to work with live bookmarks - they want you to use a news aggregator
  7. another goff/durst house link: http://www.bruce-goff-film.com/de/building_09.html#
  8. i'll answer that for him - he mentioned it a few times - haven't seen him around lately (HAIF link) the chuck wagon is now a pupuseria (HAIF link)
  9. will try for a store manager next... my email to corporate was more about their future plans for that location. i would have *assumed* that any history they may have of the store would be on the sears archive site - but who knows of course - there is nothing about houston on it at all
  10. well, got a response: Thank you for contacting Sears Holdings Corporation. At this time, we do not have any information regarding the rennovation of the Sears store located on Main Street in Houston, Texas. Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We value you as a Sears Holdings Corporation customer, and we truly intend to provide you with the best possible customer service. Sincerely, National Customer Relations Sears Holdings Corporation
  11. any idea what became of the sign after the donation? _____________ i recently emailed Sears about the store on main st. we'll see what they say (if anything)
  12. this is a little off, but it reminded me of a picture i took back in early 2003 - i haven't noticed recently if this is still there or what it actually was - i think it reads "1016-B rusk" (which wold be right around rusk and main) looks like an industrial door...
  13. yeah - the sears is located at 4000 n shepherd, and garden oaks theater (church) was (is) at 3750 last time i drove by the light wasn't good, but it looked very toned down - the marquee is still there, though
  14. from memory i can't say - although i do remember it looking rather generic oddly enough, while doing a chronicle archive search, there's another (newer) aragon ballroom: Two months ago, Cantu's dream came true. On Oct. 7, he and his wife, Maria, won $28 million in the Texas Lotto. Despite the financial bonanza, Pedro Cantu still runs the family-owned Cantu Moving and Storage business on Houston's north side, and the Cantus still live in the same modest Fifth Ward dwelling. But Pedro, with the good wishes of Maria, is charting a slightly new course for his life -- that of a boxing promoter in Houston, a city that over the last 20 years has proved to be a graveyard for others with similar aspirations. Tonight at 7:30 in the Aragon Ballroom (Hillcroft at South Main), Cantu Promotions Inc. will stage its first event. this was from the 12.02.94 issue of the chronicle
  15. definitely gather like-minded folks and make separate complaints... we have a loud motorcycle and a few vehicles that rattle the house with their sound systems, and while usually a daily irritation, they are pretty transient and not very predictable, so there's not much to be done about it btw - i have never been on a motorcycle like that - if the vibrations can shake an entire house, i wonder what it's like to straddle it?
  16. more from bob bailey: http://www.cah.utexas.edu/db/dmr/dmr_resul...p;Submit=Submit
  17. that was the delman theater - the bob bailey collection has a few neat pictures: http://www.cah.utexas.edu/db/dmr/dmr_resul...p;Submit=Submit it was demolished in June of 2002
  18. i wish - weingarten is just letting this idle and die - then they'll resurrect by knocking it down in the middle of the night (or something of the like) i just wish they weren't so underhanded about things - i would think opposition would be met better when it isn't crooked
  19. oh...geez nothing like pyrotechnics to get the appetite going
  20. yep, and here's a matchbook from the milby - no address on it, but the directory listed it at 902 texas, and the barber shop at 607 travis
  21. turns out it probably came from toyota center. not sure why - the aeros lost a friend said that the streets were filled with smoke (from the fireworks, presumably) and there were firetrucks, etc by the time i was in the area it was all over, but i could hear the bangs from the dunlavy/westheimer area who knows, though - might have been a real fire by toyota center!
  22. nooo! heh it showed from of all your posts which forum you posted in the most (i think mine was like 15% historic houston) yup - kind of interesting to see who posted where
