  1. I have to agree with jm1fd. I lived on a street with speed bumps. It doesn't slow down the people that want to speed. They will either slow down fast and then gun it when they clear the bump or just floor it across all the speed bumps - since if you go fast enough the car wont actually bump. We had a guy that used to sail down the street everyday in a 71 impala going what had to be 60...never slowing a bit. Speed bumps just become an annoyance for the residents more than anything else. Other solutions would work better. Narrower lanes, on-street parking, center islands (like some streets in spring branch).
  2. We have a 6 of those exact chairs. They are VERY fragile. anyway. one of the chairs has this on the bottom. (we don't have a desk like that though). Hickory Chair Mfg. Co. Manufacturers Hickory, N.C. Black Bros Furn Co. Houston, Tex Hope that helps..
  3. Pennington Buick...here is a link to its listing on the endangered deco site: http://www.houstondeco.org/1950s/pennington.html
  4. An interesting take on the townhome. I can't say this is my favorite design but I like that it is different and that they incorporated green elements. copy of article online: http://www.dwell.com/homes/green/10016251.html the har listing for 730 Tulane: http://search.har.com/engine/dispsearch.cf...p;mlnum=3436645
  5. GALVESTON LOFTS TOUR, October 6-7, 2007, 10am - 5:00 pm http://www.galveston.com/loftstour/ EASTWOOD HISTORIC HOMES TOUR, October 20-21, 2007, noon - 5:00 pm
  6. Living in Baytown in the mid 70's, we always called them Huggers. They were made and distributed in the area by the company that created Tiddies sandals in Pasadena. I don't think I ever heard them called Koozies until the early 90's. (What about you Tjones?) http://mytiddies.com/product.php?productid=16229
  7. Santa Rosa is the name of the subdivision (which was built first) it is in/near. The real question is why did they name the subdivision that? Probably the developer liked the name or was from there..who knows.
  8. f.y.i. i have never had a problem with live.com and i am running firefox 2.0.0.7
  9. it looks like almeda rd and belfort are put into a tunnel or maybe the dashed lines represent the existing overpasses. that would be crazy....like being underneath the pearce elevated? and the freight trains will go straight thru the roundabout???!!
  10. and fluorescent green, too. the pupusas there are okay but i like the pupuseria on telephone rd better. you know the one, sevfiv...near your old digs just down from the santa rosa theater site.
  11. i love stefano's pizza - and i agree with you on the rest of the menu. hit or miss but the pizza is great.
  12. 1) Babbo Bruno in Friendswood 2) Italian Cafe (nasa 1 at kirby) 3) Portofino in Clear Lake Shores Used to like Santa Barbara in Friendswood, but it seems to have gone downhill.
  13. You might try this: http://www.ibacktonature.com/Pages/readystrip-PD.html It worked great on all my doors, windows, and trim. I haven't used it on furniture but i think it is supposed to work fine on it. It makes stripping paint very easy and it is safe! I have a 1926 Victrola (If i remember the year correctly) Still plays and looks great. It would be perfect if the stoopid movers had not broke the tips off two of the feet during my last move!
  14. I agree with Musicman - ever since they widened Sims Bayou in 90's - flooding has been a non-issue. And crime is not a problem either. I think GV has one of the lowest crime rates in Houston. I personally like ditches...it lends a country feel in the city. Not to mention that they are more efficient at carrying water.
  15. Urbannomad posted the link above...but here you go anyhoo...
  16. i don't think so. This is too far south. (All remnants of the Texas/Capitol ramps should have been eliminated when they rebuilt 59) I always assumed these were to provide access to the median for maintenance crews, etc. http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=29....p;z=19&om=1
  17. Danax, try Stahlman. I got some there a few years back.
  18. i was able to purchase back issues several years ago. i just dropped them an email request.
  19. that is an interesting photo. a lot of the kids have dolls. i wonder if it is an old practice that slowly faded out? the one in the park place photo looks like the girl holding it. I wonder why she has a life size doll of herself and the other kids don't
  20. The only kids i recognize are northbeaumont, ashikaga, and chet. btw, do you remember the significance of the doll in front center?
  21. I believe Lawndale is also included. from their newsletter - these are the covered subdivisions: Eastwood
  22. Sounds like we need a little tv show clarification... Flip This House is a one hour program on A&E. It's the one that RPS mentioned that had the problems with the old Sam Leccima Atlanta episodes. Currently there are new episodes on A&E with another Atlanta company, A New Haven company, and the Montelongos in San Antonio. The show that the Houston house was on tonight is called Property Ladder and it is an hour program on TLC. Flip That House is a 30 miinute program also on TLC but completely different from Flip This House Confused yet??? People just need to realize that these shows are just entertainment and no more real or any less scripted probably than The Real World on MTV.(or insert random reality show here)
  23. I am thinking around 1948 - based on the construction on Fannin, since that is when it was extended through Hermann Park
