  1. The El Capitan's sister theater is the Granada. It's out Jensen near Tidwell and It's still there, I dont remember what it is now, if anything. I took a "scenic" drive out Jensen a couple of months ago and "found" it. Sorry no pics though. There is also another old theater near the El Capitan. I think it's a shooting range now. It is in the old Pasadena downtown area..maybe on Shaw? I don't know what it was called though.
  2. george's italian (if that is the george's you mean) is still open. they moved a few years back...farther out park place, near telephone.
  3. I remember going home from astroworld or the astrodome late at night in the 70's and seeing nudity on the drive inn at the south loop right there at holmes road and cullen (where cherry demolition stores their debris now). The instance that stands out in my mind is a lady standing up covered with balloons while a guy was popping them one at a time exposing select body parts. Probably pretty tame by today's standards but us kids were thrilled. You could also get some "shots" from the Red Bluff drive inn on 225.
  4. the logo is so patriotic and official looking...you'd never know that it was for a skating rinks association. they must have thought they were doing their civic duty - keeping teens off the streets Is the eagle wearing skates?
  5. Also, Ashikaga, the libraries over there in Beaumont should have newspapers on microfiche...like they do here. You might luck out and find that they have the Chronicle or Post over there. Or you could take a road trip to the Big H.
  6. Ebay...and they even ship it to your front door
  7. Oops. Sorry I guess I wasn't clear on the Lutheran High School info. It was in the area formed by Rustic, Garland, Woodridge, and I-45. Taking a second look at it, I guess the High School has been completely removed. However, the buildings along Rustic and Garland - in the northeast corner of the property are still there - which I guess are actually the buildings that were part of the Mount Olive Lutheran Church Elementary School. This is an image from the 1982 USGS map: Aerial view from 2002
  8. That is because Magnolia was a predecessor to Mobil. I read in the Chron that only the "good" Valero stations will get the Valero makeover. They will brand older stations or the one's that don't meet their new standards as Shamrocks.

  10. Peppermint Park at Gulfgate was at the corner of Reveille and Arnim (i think it is currently the Dodge Body Shop) Lutheran High School (South) was across the freeway from Gulfgate - corner of Woodridge and Rustic (Currently HCC Southeast Campus). It was there until 1982, then it moved to the South Loop feeder just down from the YMCA. It moved to Dixie Farm Road and 45 around 1998
  11. Sidewinder is the Runaway Rickshaws. Rock N Rocket is the Looping Starship
  12. OOPS! sorry I did know your gender from other posts but it's hard to keep track. "Guy" is gender inspecific these days...right Franks can get very crowded since it is so tiny. I don't know if it worth it to fight the crowd often but it's a decent place and you should at least try it. Did you ever make it to George's?
  13. Sevfiv, Since you are a southeast guy now, not sure if you have been to any of these southeast "greasy" establishments: Tel-wink, Franks, and Kelley's Good for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. I like the Tel-wink's waffles. BTW, 888 doesn't have a buffet unless it's a new thing. 888 is definately my favorite Chinese Rest.
  14. There is a synopsis of what happened to Riverside Terrace in Slotboom's Houston Freeways book - relevant to the construction of the South Freeway, it starts on Pg 184. http://www.houstonfreeways.com/ebook/South_Freeway_72ppi.pdf Considering the Muhammed Ali/River Oaks story, this section also discusses, Jack Caesar, the first black to buy into Riverside Terrace. I believe that if Ali wanted to live in River Oaks, he would live in River Oaks, just from his character. I think he would be sure and move there if someone told him he couldn't.
  15. HEB is really cheap on the basics, but if you want anything else, other than what is an advertised special that week, then you pay for it. I have found that my bill is cheaper at Kroger's...for my regular product mix. And my bill at Randall's is outrageous...well the last time I went there...maybe a year ago. I think it just depends on what you buy and what brands you buy...or won't buy.
  16. For a history on Riverside you need to see if you can view the documentary This is our home, It is not for sale. Talks about racism, white/jewish flight, and the exploitation by realtors and developers. Made in the late 80's, it is still very much relevant today. It has been on TV before and either Rice or the MFA have screened it recently.
  17. Didnt Fertitta get the lease to the Flagship so he could rebuild the Galveston Pleasure Pier? Or did that fall through?
  18. I heard today that SixFlags has, this week, started dismantling WaterWorld. The Edge - the tall, near-vertical waterslide (between the wave pool and XLR8) - is already disassembled and gone. Anyone see a waterslide heading down I-45 to Splashtown??
  19. Woo hoo!! Us Eastsiders have y'all beat in something! Dbigtex...There is more than one the area There is a Dunkin Donuts on Wayside near the golf course (been there a few times recently) and one on Southmore in Pasadena (okay..this is stretching the east end a bit). Seems like there is one in Bellaire somewhere too. There used to be a lot more during the seventies. Wasnt there one on Kirby not too long ago?
  20. WOW! I didnt realize it was gutted and open to the sky. I know the city has been trying to get someone to restore it. The last movie I saw there was The Empire Strikes Back - in the balcony theater (Like it is at the River Oaks but just one screen upstairs)
  21. The company that owns Cedar Point is still showing interest in purchasing Six Flags As well as Daniel Snyder's company - Red Zone. http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=..._id=46371&rfi=6 I wouldn't write off Astroworld for dead just yet. I have also heard that Fiesta Texas is pushing very hard to get the Texas Cyclone moved there - if they do close and relocate rides.
