  1. hey c'mon - they saved the fridge and the washer and dryer
  2. It looks like you might be right - the bldg might still be there (probably doesn't look the same though). From my old directory, Spell's was at 4938 fulton which would put it on the SE corner of Fulton and Gale (i know you said NE but do you think it could have been se ?). From Google, a building of similar footprint is still there. HCAD shows it as built 1950...but we know how accurate that can be...not very. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&...002704&z=19 Btw the NE corner was wiped clean for an Uber Mansion (see it on the google link too)
  3. I have an old map somewhere that shows it. if i remember correctly it was on the westside of the neighborhood. i think the later sections of lindale park were built over it. So where was/is the lindale park shopping center shown in the brochure? is it still extant?
  4. I like how the HUD foreclosures usually have the "mandatory" photo of the taped down toilet lid.
  5. He obviously expedited the demolition after the chron article was published...probably fearing a ground-swell of support. He took a page from the Ashland tea room house...or from the old adage...its easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission...or something like that. y'all know what i mean.
  6. The Golden Seafood location on Airline always seems to be better in food and service. I usually just go to Airline even though the other one is closer.
  7. the deep setback of the house on the lot compared to its neighbors (1924) might be evidence that the house existed before the rest of the neighborhood.
  8. Santa Rosa is the name of the subdivision (which was built first) it is in/near. The real question is why did they name the subdivision that? Probably the developer liked the name or was from there..who knows.
  9. it looks like almeda rd and belfort are put into a tunnel or maybe the dashed lines represent the existing overpasses. that would be crazy....like being underneath the pearce elevated? and the freight trains will go straight thru the roundabout???!!
  10. and fluorescent green, too. the pupusas there are okay but i like the pupuseria on telephone rd better. you know the one, sevfiv...near your old digs just down from the santa rosa theater site.
  11. I agree with Musicman - ever since they widened Sims Bayou in 90's - flooding has been a non-issue. And crime is not a problem either. I think GV has one of the lowest crime rates in Houston. I personally like ditches...it lends a country feel in the city. Not to mention that they are more efficient at carrying water.
  12. Urbannomad posted the link above...but here you go anyhoo...
  13. that is an interesting photo. a lot of the kids have dolls. i wonder if it is an old practice that slowly faded out? the one in the park place photo looks like the girl holding it. I wonder why she has a life size doll of herself and the other kids don't
  14. The only kids i recognize are northbeaumont, ashikaga, and chet. btw, do you remember the significance of the doll in front center?
  15. I am thinking around 1948 - based on the construction on Fannin, since that is when it was extended through Hermann Park
  16. i concur on red lobster...ewwww. Although we used to frequent the one on Broadway (near Bellfort) when I was a kid (currently Don Carlos). Too bad Mandola's Blue Oyster Bar closed a few years back. Still have Captain Benny's boat to enjoy beer and oysters on the deck though. bonnie's has never impressed me. not awful but not noteworthy either. Pf changs is overrated IMO. 888 is awesome. Also like the Vietnamese food at Cuu Long on Broadway sometimes too. George's is decent italian at a great price from a great guy. How about Kelley's as a steakhouse?!
  17. sad. from the good brick award citation: Through their caring and skilled restoration of 2421 Brentwood, Caudell and Powers have made the house so valuable that it will not be threatened with demolition in our lifetimes
  18. and Empire has added parking this year by taking the lot adjacent to their existing parking lot on elmen
  19. Looks like Weingarten is pressing forward... http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nb/hei...ws/4961385.html Contractors removed a line of trees, including several large oaks, from the edge of the River Oaks Shopping Center Wednesday as Weingarten Realty Investors continued its preparations to demolish part of the 70-year-old center.
  20. Golfcrest Country Club closed on December 31, 1970. Then they would have to clear the site and build a stadium. so i think East End Susan is probably right or very close to being right.
  21. check out their news on their website: Jun/27 - InTown teams up with internationally acclaimed design firm Duany Plater-Zyberk. Mar/23 - InTown recognized as pioneer in revitalization of Houston Ave. Dec/15 - InTown makes U.S. history with privately-funded cleaning of Superfund site. more revitalization to the corner of live oak and capitol! Somehow I think Duany would be aghast that they had a cool building like the Coke plant and couldn't find an adaptive reuse for it. heck i think most people would think it would be neat to at least have the plant facade with their boring townhome inside. boo!
  22. ...looking forward to your usually excellent photo-demo-graphy...
  23. Someone told me it was being demolished on Tuesday. I will be very sad if it's true Does anyone know? pictures from endangered deco (GHPA) http://www.houstondeco.org/1920s/cocacola.html
  24. seems like we have had this thread before.... how about el rey? (shepherd @ washington location) not much on ambiance but the food is good, the price is right, and the coffee is great.
  25. we waited forever for our food on two different occasions. we had a distracted order taker once that didn't even acknowledge us for a full two minutes as we stood at the counter. several incidents of dirty tables and no one busing tables. there was probably something else that bugged me too. but i guess i should give it another try since it was a long time ago.
