  1. I am thinking around 1948 - based on the construction on Fannin, since that is when it was extended through Hermann Park
  2. i concur on red lobster...ewwww. Although we used to frequent the one on Broadway (near Bellfort) when I was a kid (currently Don Carlos). Too bad Mandola's Blue Oyster Bar closed a few years back. Still have Captain Benny's boat to enjoy beer and oysters on the deck though. bonnie's has never impressed me. not awful but not noteworthy either. Pf changs is overrated IMO. 888 is awesome. Also like the Vietnamese food at Cuu Long on Broadway sometimes too. George's is decent italian at a great price from a great guy. How about Kelley's as a steakhouse?!
  3. just curious...when did the law enacting the Texas pledge take effect (with or without God)? We only recited the US pledge when i was in school.
  4. i am glad you aren't a third world dictator with nukes. you are always so trigger happy with the explosives.
  5. I don't know anything of the history of the subdivision but it is one of my favorite old neighborhoods. Still very "splotchy" though. Some nice old classic houses. There has also been some nice mod updates to a couple of the ranchers in there. The older section (north of wynona?) seems to have the better housing stock. I used to sometimes use Broad to cut through from 45 to 610 without having to fight the traffic in the non-existent 45/610 interchange at Gulfgate.
  6. sad. from the good brick award citation: Through their caring and skilled restoration of 2421 Brentwood, Caudell and Powers have made the house so valuable that it will not be threatened with demolition in our lifetimes
  7. North Shore High School is in Galena Park ISD. There is no North Shore ISD. I think Galena Park HS plays in 4A North Shore is 5A Tjones, Galena Park (the city) is off Clinton Dr at Main (Mercury) and also Holland. South of Jacinto City but North of the Ship Channel. The district is much larger and includes Jacinto City, and the North Shore area (I-10 at Uvalde, Woodforest, et al)
  8. We had ours insulated for about 5 years. the 'normal' insulation you lay down in attics (don't remember the r value) we had it supported by wires. It worked fine over 80% of the house. But under one corner of the house it trapped moisture and it attracted termites. So to check out the condition of the rest of the house, we pulled it all down. We did not find any other bad spots. We hypothesize that the drainage might not been as good under that corner. You can tell a big difference on cold days in the winter - not so much so in the summer. Electric bill did go up some, but not exponentially. I was told to go with that styrofoam board type insulation if i wanted to go back something, but i deemed the savings would not be significant enough. and I probably wouldn't do it again anyway, even if we fixed our drainage, only because if you get a termite problem it would be harder to locate them...and i would rather have a little higher electric bill over termites. duh!
  9. and Empire has added parking this year by taking the lot adjacent to their existing parking lot on elmen
  10. i took a cruise out of Barbours Cut about 6 years ago (whenever they were doing it) It was definately more convenient for me living on the SE side (than driving to Galveston) and since it was so close we had someone drop us off and pick us up. I don't remember the departure down the channel, we may have been checking out the ship more than anything. but i do remember the return, it was about 11pm at night. We were trying to pick out what all the different lights on the coast were. So from that aspect it was pretty interesting. I have taken other cruises from other ports and i must say that if i didn't live here and was flying to Houston to get on my cruiseship, that i would rather depart from Galveston. It has so many shops and cafes right near the port (like a lot of other cruise port cities) that if i were on vacation, I would want to stay a little while and check it out.
  11. Looks like Weingarten is pressing forward... http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nb/hei...ws/4961385.html Contractors removed a line of trees, including several large oaks, from the edge of the River Oaks Shopping Center Wednesday as Weingarten Realty Investors continued its preparations to demolish part of the 70-year-old center.
  12. was it a bank? like the bank with the similar old gold dome that was a bank united/wamu et al near the summit? http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=29....p;z=19&om=1
  13. Golfcrest Country Club closed on December 31, 1970. Then they would have to clear the site and build a stadium. so i think East End Susan is probably right or very close to being right.
  14. and of course there is still fiesta loma linda on telephone between 45 and lawndale
  15. check out their news on their website: Jun/27 - InTown teams up with internationally acclaimed design firm Duany Plater-Zyberk. Mar/23 - InTown recognized as pioneer in revitalization of Houston Ave. Dec/15 - InTown makes U.S. history with privately-funded cleaning of Superfund site. more revitalization to the corner of live oak and capitol! Somehow I think Duany would be aghast that they had a cool building like the Coke plant and couldn't find an adaptive reuse for it. heck i think most people would think it would be neat to at least have the plant facade with their boring townhome inside. boo!
  16. can you say Toughskins!? Sears was where we went to sit on santa's lap too. and look at the toys you wanted for christmas - all picked out of the sears catalog, of course.
  17. hey! i actually went there last year after you mentioned it on the board. i agree wholeheartedly definately unpretentious! good coffee and breakfast. a little slow - but no problem - as the people were nice and friendly. a little like eating in a stockroom...but i like divey places like that
  18. okay, they get a visit from me! the breakfast bowl sounds yummy. The mosquito cafe in galveston has a breakfast bowl that is similar. i love it too.
  19. ...looking forward to your usually excellent photo-demo-graphy...
  20. ain't the internet golden.... is that it? we didn't have many 7-11's near us growing up so i got icee's (sears, kmart, utotem, etc) how about slush puppies? is that right? i liked slushes better...used to get them at a mom & pop drive in near me when i was growing up.
  21. Someone told me it was being demolished on Tuesday. I will be very sad if it's true Does anyone know? pictures from endangered deco (GHPA) http://www.houstondeco.org/1920s/cocacola.html
