  1. The windows are double hung. The upper pane has probably slid down in the frame over time. The ideal fix is to get the windows moving again. Clean out the old paint and crud out of the tracks. Get the lower pane moving up and the upper pane moving down. Once you do that you should be able to get the upper sash pushed all the way up and get the lock to line up properly. If you dont want to go to all that effort, you can put a shim under the latch to adjust the position to where it meets the mating half.....or you can drill holes on the sides through both the upper and lower windows where the sashes meet and use pins to lock the window. Or you can even paint them shut! It's too hot in Houston to open the windows! If you mean sheetrock cracks (and your block and beam foundation is fine), then there is not much you can do about it living in houston with the soil we have. Just make sure all your water drains away from the house and not under the house. You should get the steam from a shower out of the bathroom somehow or the excessive moisture will eventually cause problems with mold, mildew, and etc. You can open the bathroom window when you are showering - if you don't want to install an exhaust vent. that is if you decided not to paint them shut
  2. You need to post some pictures of everything you are doing! I like to live vicariously through others hard work. Seriously though, It would be great to see it now and then when you are finished...it also might help people give you some ideas.
  3. I saw one of those Houston, Remember When episodes a long time ago on Channel 8 and they mentioned it. It was called the Mountain Speedway. Seems like there was a weird story about someone living in a house under the coaster.
  4. So how long does it take? i have had it running for 15 minutes and i seem to be in an endless train loop with no pedestrians.
  5. yep...bleh...now you can buy homes over there (or near it) again since it has been "remediated"! and closer to the Astroworld area...Kennedy Heights http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/archive....id=1994_1183630 http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/archive....id=2000_3208113
  6. Sure...along with snap the whip. It's where you would get in a long chain of skaters and the first person would grab the support pole in the middle of the rink and slingslot everyone around the end throwing off a few skaters each time. i dont know if anyone "won" that game...but we would do it.
  7. check this story in the Chron about the Starlite: http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/archive....id=2005_4011112
  8. i believe you are thinking of Chequer Imports. At least that what it says on the old sign. 45 northbound just before Cullen. I think it was a used car lot....dunno what it was originally..somehow i thought it was an old Prince's Drive-in..but I don't remember why I thought that.
  9. It was definately one of those things kids look for when you are going by downtown. I always had to look at it just like the flying eagle on the budweiser plant. i can remember the center white section of the Gulf sign being out at one time and I used to think it looked like a hamburger. I am sure I rattled endlessly about this to my parents. Kids
  10. here is another old postcard of the prudential building with a different view show the "piece of the rock" sign on top.
  11. Sorry, subdude...the car wash was demolished several months ago and replaced by a non descript convenience store/gas station.
  12. Here is a small pic from an ebay auction. you can see the gulf sign on top of the bldg. in the pic on the map.
  13. Cool...at least it will be saved. Does anyone know the status of the old mansion in the far southeastern corner of Sienna? It is off of 521 just north of Sienna Point. I have always assumed that it is the Scanlan Mansion but I have never confirmed it. It looked somewhat maintained but not in pristine condition the last time I was down there (several years ago). The Scanlans were a prominent Houston family that aquired the plantation in the early 1900's. They supposedly disassembled their house they lived in on Main St. in Houston and used its parts to build the mansion.
  14. I beat you to the punch...i posted the photo on the old signage thread here: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...216entry66216
  15. more like trailer storage lot. i think they did sales there for a while but i believe there are just a bunch of old dilapidated mobile homes rusting in there now. address is 6202 Decker Dr. According to HCAD it is owned by America's Acceptance Mobile Homes, a mobile home dealer. Ownership history lists Tercar Theaters as the owner in the 80's
  16. The place in Midtown was probably Adkins. 3515 Fannin Street http://www.adkinsantiques.com/aa/ Yep..its a nice color but your house will look like every other new and/or remodelled house in Houston. I liked it about 5 years ago but now it's almost worse than white. When I see an old house for sale on HAR.com and it has every room in it painted in Summertime, it makes me feel sad. It makes me think someone came in a did a quick flip and didn't care didley for the character of the house. Instead, I would go with something that plays off your furniture or decor in each room and be unique. If you want historic..look at Sherwin Williams. They have a selection of historic colors called their "Preservation Pallette".
  17. Link to an older thread on the neighborhood http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...?showtopic=2966
  18. Great pics! The interior does look cool. I'll bet it was pretty nice in its day. At least it didn't get gutted...yet.
  19. i know everyone appreciates your contributions! rain or shine keep up the good work! thanks!!!
  20. Sevfiv, When you went out to the Epson Drive-In...Did you happen to snap some shots of the Granada theatre, near there on Jensen? I think it has the same facade as the Capitan but it says Granada where it says pasadena on the capitan. I keep saying I am gonna go up there and take a pic but I haven't made it yet. Gnu
  21. That is exactly the reason the mailing address is Seabrook. The post office for that zip code (77586) is in Seabrook. I used to live in Mariner Village (4747) right next to where Endeavor will be. It had a Seabrook address but was definately Pasadena City Limits. Paid my water bill to the City of Pasadena and got a speeding ticket from Pasadena PD almost in front of my house. It is 30mph there and they used to run a speed trap often. I think they don't want it publicized that it is Pasadena right there since they have such tiny little Pasadena City Limits signs posted at Mud Lake and Taylor Lake. There is a Pasadena police and fire substation up Kirby near Red Bluff, I assume they would have gone down Kirby and cut through Taylor Lake Village to respond to any incident along that part of Nasa 1.
  22. I think the original (or at least early 70's) call letters for Ch 26 (KRIV) were KDOG.
  23. So do you think the drive-in was on part of the site of the old Epsom downs? I know it was right there but i dont know the exact spot.
  24. I never actually went there but i thought it was at the end of Penn city road near the east belt and the ship channel. Definately somewhere near there.
  25. Now you too can own a piece of the history of the Surrey House! Someone is selling this on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Ad-Ashtray-Surrey-Hous...1QQcmdZViewItem
