1. I preferred when Prince's drive-in was where the Stop 'n Go is now. There are pics on here somewhere of the strip center before it was brutalized. It was art deco and was ruined much like the Sears on Main. The block of the strip center would be a good location for mid-rise with a parking garage beneath and street level retail all the way around. At any rate, they cannot reduce the number of lanes. There is too much TMC to Heights traffic every day. Edit: Sorry I thought I was on the Charrette thread. Prive's site is still up - http://www.privelounge.com/
2. More like the neighborhood of South Louisiana.
3. State National's still got one too. You can see it in both photos above.
4. All those old buildings had incinerators with smoke stacks. I guess they burned their trash. Many stacks are still attached to the old buildings, they're just nolonger used.
5. Oh, I see it now. Guess I need to walk around opposite the one-way streets and check them out. That eyeball would be pretty freaky in your rearview mirror.
6. I caught some of the press conference through the lame speaker on my computer. I thought he said that it would take several days and something about cranes, etc. Might not be an implode. I'm pretty sure it's the old building. I remember earlier on this thread something about that building being affected by Ike. Apparently, the cracks have expanded in the past year.
7. Ch 11 online's got it. I'll bet it's just the older building. Looks like they might have to shut down the rail at some point.
8. From the city of Houston site:
Any motorist who stalls or experiences a flat tire who is not in a moving lane of traffic has the option of receiving a free tow to a destination of their choice within one mile of the nearest exit. If the motorist believes he or she has run out of gas, the destination can be the nearest gas station, even if it is beyond a mile after the nearest exit. If the motorist has a flat tire and a good spare, the tire will be changed for free, as well, if the motorist wants.
If a tow results from a police investigation, i.e. accident or arrest, or if the vehicle has been abandoned, the tow fee will be the city rate, currently $143.50. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
9. Oh yeah, I remember the tow truck lottery. Glad those days are gone. I for one am not going to change a tire on the freeway shoulder. I'd be happy to pay for a tow to the nearest parking lot where I could safely change it. A short tow like this is less expensive and safer for all freeway rollers.
10. The elevator shaft has risen above what appears to be the top floor. I guess they'll need turbine access. It should be interesting watching them finishing off the top.
11. Actually, River Oaks Shopping Center is in Montrose. Shepherd in the boundry to the west. SW Frwy to the south. The north is Allen Pkwy from Shepherd to Taft. East is Taft, zig zag Genessee, Helena, Bagby, Spur. Edit: Super Duper Neighborhood - http://www.houstontx.gov/planning/suprnbhds/SN_LU_Maps/SN_24.pdf
12. I couldn't agree more. It really peaves me when they start changing our traditional borders. One example is slapping River Oaks on something that is clearly not in RO. When the woman was hit on her bicycle by the fire truck, Dominique (Ch2) said that the accident happened in the RO area. Give me a break, Dunlavy is straight up Montrose.
13. There's at least one in the tunnels downtown. I have to agree on the bread - yum.
14. Landscaping is going in toward the northern end of the property. The oaks appear to be pretty good size.
15. As I recall, both these varieties of trees grow straight up and roots straight down. They should not impede on utilities or pavement, so hopefully they'll be around a very, very long time. Nice!
16. OMG I just peeped in. It looks like a clothing store (dress shop) with a bar! They're not open, but I'll keep checking as I walk by.
17. I think it's interesting how the 'dig' exposes the underside of that bridge. I'll be people were living up under there before.
18. I walk by there every day, so I'll try and peek in.
19. They put up a new awning on the south/Prairie side of the Hogg Palace yesterday. It's black with zebra print trim, with a fancy R printed on it. It does not appear to be in the same, larger space where a restaurant was most recently, but another smaller space on the side. 'R' anybody in the know?
20. Swamplot has revealed that, in fact, Smoothie King will take over the old Taco Cabana. The color scheme is white with red trim. Opening soon. I guess they're moving from Hawthorne.
21. I remember hearing that artifacts were often found on the Bolivar Penninsula, at McFadden beach - probably from Indians. I found a big-azz tooth there one time. I came to the conclusion that it probably came from a cow or a monster.
22. There's no way 20 cars would fit in that space. Is that a new fence around it? I wonder how you get back there from the inside. Music, where are you? What's the scoop? Observation: The roof on the building on the other side, that houses Cafe Adagio sure does hold a lot of water after a rain. Is that normal?
