  1. Also noticed in the newspaper article they added he had a female companion with him at the time of the incident and the timeline changed. Not that there is anything wrong with that but more stuff keeps coming out about the incident which just shows you can't really believe anything you read. I haven't been in that area for a few years. I did not realize there were upscale homes there now.
  2. I got this email for a Physics professor there when I questioned him about the structure. "When I came to Rice in 1977 the old timers claimed there had been some sort of engine or dynamo in the area, perhaps to supply DC power to big magnets. Later, there was an air liquefier plant in the same area, to support the liquid helium system that was installed about 1953. There may have also been some lab space in one of the buildings, as we found radioactive waste (since removed) between the Amp wing and the area around the two buildings shown. By my arrival it was all gone, although the foundation slab for the square structure was part of a paved parking lot. When the area was 'beautified' for the G7 economic summit the paving and concrete were mostly replaced by grass. Some of the footings were very thick and deep, so there are still traces for a future archaeologist."
  3. intestinal fortitude=armed to the teeth
  4. Not a good place to be at 4 in the morning. Hope he's okay. The Rockets really need him.
  5. Sweet. That will sure beef up their lineup offensively, plus they need someone with experience behind the plate. Asmus was invaluable in that regard. To bad he couldn't hit.
  6. Everything was Bush's fault. You should know that by now. I think he's even being blamed for the Civil War.
  7. My dad took a company offered early retirement package in the late 80's from Union Oil. I knew a lot of people in the business that had to change occupations. In Houston that era was a lot worse than the financial crisis we are seeing today. Maybe that's why people in Houston have such a ho-hum attitude about what's taking place now. We have seen a whole lot worse.
  8. Interesting. I always new there had to have once been a road between Hanszen College and Will Rice College (West Hall and South Hall on the map). It's just a tree lined path now but it's obvious by the location of hydrants and fire department connections that there was a street there at one time. What I didn't know about was the road shown to go right through the middle of the academic quad, where Willy's statue is located and where the annual commencement is held.
  9. I stand corrected. Guess I was thinking of the old theater. Is it still a bank?
  10. I used to bank there. It was later bought out by Nations Bank which later became Bank of America. I believe the building was torn down in the early 90's.
  11. site I had one of those plastic mold toys. I wonder how many houses they burned down? My family first moved to Meyerland around 63. We lived just 3 blocks from the mall. We shopped at the grocery store for several years before it closed.
  12. Your biggest delay is going to be at Main and 610. It's really backed up there in the morning. I would stay clear of that intersection.
  13. I know the roof leaked and the ac frequently went out. It was cramped and had a crappy kitchen and living quarters. At least the last time I was there, which was over 10 years ago. I had heard the City was planning on replacing it for years but kept putting it off. At the same time they did not want to dump any money into the old place. With the growth of the med center, a new station should have been built years ago. I'm sure it was full of asbestos and lead paint.
  14. Conditions at the fire station when it was active were deplorable. As I stated in another post, bums living in downtown missions had better living conditions than the firefighters. There’s no way anyone will keep that building.
  15. Well it's sure nicer than the fire house it's replacing. What a dump. I knew firefighters that worked there and the old station 33 and they were a disgrace. Bum's living in downtown missions had better living conditions than those firefighters.
  16. The owner was in jail for tax evasion several years ago. He's a well known slum lord that owns a lot of property in Houston, all of it run-down. I dealt with him briefly in the 90's over a high rise he owned that was in very bad condition. He's a MAJOR asshole that does not care about his properties or tenants. Until the City of Houston grows some balls and takes over neglected properties like this I'm afraid nothing can be done. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening. I will say he was not single handily responsible for the WS demise. A group out of NYC owned the square for a while in the late 70's, early 80's and that's when the neglect started and the place began to deteriorate.
  17. So sad. I have such fond memories of the place I don't think I could see it in person. Thanks for sharing the pictures.
  18. Even in REAL BBQ/Chili cook-offs most cooks serve the general public crappy stuff and save the good stuff for the judges and their friends. At least every one I have been involved in.
  19. Actually business is booming out there. I haven't seen any restaurants fold up. Just a few shops that were doomed no matter where they were located. I do agree about the traffic at 6 and 59. It's a nightmare. I avoid it like the plague.
  20. We often drive by the one in Stafford. Very impressive place. Does anyone know if they have tours available?
  21. Saw many musical acts at Liberty Hall but my two fondest memories were seeing Cheech and Chong perform and the play One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. It was a great place to see anything.
  22. The question is will Champion be around when rates go back up? I've been burned twice by companies folding.
  23. Because it's a business. A tax free one at that.
