  1. I remember the Fox Photo kiosk. I believe it was on the north-east corner where Escalante's is now. I'm drawing a blank about the Post Office one though.
  2. Foamer nights were the best. Sometimes they had concerts after the game. Saw Doug Kershaw get married at one game and play a concert after. Just happened to be foamer night and someone hit a homer. We stocked up on free beer for the concert afterwards. Don't remember to much else.
  3. We need another CVS. Just not enough of them. I haven't been there in years. Will have to try to make a trip over there before it closes.
  4. Before Hickory Farms it was Mading Dugans Drug store.
  5. Hopefully Yao will be able to teach Artest some class.
  6. Another one yesterday. Crane Topples in Kingwood Do you think it's a conspiracy?
  7. I seem to recall the Bangels playing at that event. I remember because my daughter wanted to go so bad.
  8. I've been reading Rick Campbell's blogs. Loved the blogs on Fever Tree. I was a big fan.
  9. That's just good journalism. I can't honestly say I remember swimming naked, although I undoubtedly did. Not sure if my memory's vague because it wasn't that big of a deal or because of all the chemical enhancements I took later in the 60's. Probably the latter. I still thought it was a great article.
  10. Did any of you guys catch the article in last Saturday's paper? I went to Johnston at the same time as the author. Great article although he speaks of a man that swam naked at Johnston in much earlier days. I didn't think Johnston was even built until the late 50's. Chronicle article
  11. Wasn't the poor farm next to the nut house? To be honest, when I was a young tad I heard my parents talk about the poor farm but never realized they actually existed. Learn something new every day.
  12. Great post Stu. I was a senior that year and remember the incident quite well. I got in trouble with my hair that year and was threatened with being kicked out of D.E. if I didn't cut it. Not wanting to loose my afternoon job with Foleys and have to go to school all day, I ended up cutting it. Power to the people!
  13. Madison's neighborhood demographics began changing shortly after it opened. By the time my wife graduated from there in 74 it was predominately black and you could forget about getting an education there. She graduated without hardly attending any classes her senior year. Her two younger brothers ended up just dropping out and getting GED’s. Felt bad for them because Westbury didn't start going downhill until the 80's when those apartments went up close by. They lived much closer to Westbury High than Madison but got screwed with the zoning.
  14. Man you guys have great memories. I remember all those stores you mentioned but could not have come up with them on my own. Of course my favorite spot was Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor.
  15. Very sad. He will be missed.
  16. Berkman was 5 for 5 last night. This is the Berkman we know and love. Man it's nice to have Fat Elvis back on track. Even though their pitching is subpar, this is a fun Astro team to watch. More so then recent years.
  17. Thank YOU for the memories SchwinnChopper. I had forgotten some of those places you mentioned. Yeah, WHS is not what it once was. It has become what Madison HS was in the 70's. I guess we should have seen it coming with all those apartments they built close by in the 70's and 80's. Sadly it has fallen into a demise that every predominantly minority school has. I know I would not let my kids go to school there.
  18. It was called Luke's. Luke and Annie were married and then got divorced. He gave that restaurant to Annie and he took the one at 610 and Westheimer (the building that's now Zone Erotica).
  19. I graduated from Westbury in 69 also. I remember the hair fiasco. It was a great place to go to school in the 60's. Felt sorry for some of my buddies that got zoned to Madison.
  20. Hard to believe they would invest to much while Nalco remains there. Wouldn't want to live right next to a chemical plant. Wasn't it just a couple of years ago that they had to evacuate the area because of a hazardous vapor cloud released from there?
  21. My Dad worked there also for UnoCal. Went there a lot in the late 50’s early 60’s when I was a kid. I use to sometimes hang with the receptionist/operator. (I think her name was LaVeda) This was back when she had to plug wires into a console to redirect a call. She would let me help her. I worked for a while in the building in the late 80's when I was with UTHSC. It was pretty cool but definitely outdated even then.
  22. It was supposed to be the best team in the East against the best team in the West. Whether the Celtics are the best team in the whole league remains to be seen. You can't go by the Celtics won/loss record because the East is basically pretty crappy. (Although I’ll admit they looked pretty damn good last night).
  23. It was fun while it lasted. The end of the streak was inevitable. Just wish they hadn't gotten spanked so bad on national tv. They were just starting to get some respect.
