  1. I'm in favor of ditching boxy gas stations and resurrecting mid-century modern ones.
  2. In addition to the original one on Revere, there are Berryhills on 11th in the Heights and on 43rd at Ella in Oak Forest. We used to go to the original one regularly when it first opened, as we lived nearby then. Now if we go to one, it's usually the Heights location.
  3. The number of people not realizing the exit is on the left is significantly outnumbered by the number of people who insist on performing the classic Houston traffic maneuver of using the exit lane to bypass the backed-up lane of thru traffic by zooming almost all the way up to the exit before cutting back into the thru traffic lane. These entitled morons invariably block the exit lane while they're waiting for someone to let them back into the thru traffic lane.
  4. She seems to be fond of Proverbs 23:10, which in the KJV is "Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless." (many alternate versions here). Who would have ever thought we'd have someone literally citing chapter and verse in defense of Disco Kroger? Ezekiel 23:20 is probably more appropriate for that location.
  5. The use of a lower-case "i" among all upper-case letters is the visual equivalent of nails on a chalkboard. And the "Historic Petroleum Building Erected 1926" seems like an out-of-place afterthought - does that really need to be announced on the building's main sign, and if so, did they really have to use a basic, sans-serif font like Helvetica to do so? Also, the proportions of the sign would be marginally improved if the space below "Hotel" was truncated.
  6. I met Isiah Carey once, when he and his cameraman were set up outside the downtown post office soliciting comments from customers for a news story. I really had to resist the urge to ask him if he'd ingested any bugs recently.
  7. I will never be able to think of 605 Columbia without thinking of Jeff Law and October Gallery. If ever there were a textbook example of "old Heights" vs. "new Heights", this is it.
  8. Larger version of the photo previously posted: Steve Oggero passed away in 1969 at the young age of 34. Bat lived to be 93, and passed away in 2020. Curiously, the restaurant isn't mentioned in his obituary: Obituary for John Batiest Oggero
  9. I wish they would've come up with a more original name to begin with. We should've known what was coming when the best they could do was recycle a fifty-year-old name from a God-awful Dallas team that went 1-11 before being put out of its misery.
  10. They did the same thing with the Heights location - it fronts directly onto Shepherd with parking (and the entrance) in the back. This one looks similar, except it doesn't look like it's going to have the outdoor covered patio seating that the Heights location has.
  11. As the old journalism/broadcasting saying goes, "if it bleeds, it leads".
  12. New restaurant coming from Greg Gatlin in the old Mexicatessen location on Crosstimbers: Nibbles & Sips: Gatlin’s BBQ owner opening comfort food restaurant
  13. A reasonable person might conclude in reference to that particular incident that there was very possibly no jumping involved, but rather a homicide that was made to look like the decedent had jumped from a hotel window.
  14. Might be time to trade in the SUV for an Amphicar.
  15. I hadn't thought about this in a long time until I happened to drive by it this past weekend. Judging from the exterior, it looks like not much, if anything, has happened since the fire.
  16. Vaping cannabis is almost certainly not as bad as smoking it via "regular" means, as you're not inhaling many of the toxic byproducts generated by combustion. But it's still not great for your lungs. Using any kind of "vape juice" cartridges, whether for cannabinoids or as a nicotine replacement, may very well be a different story. They're new enough to where I don't know that there's enough data yet to get a long-term picture of their overall effect on health, but just from what I've read, I'd be pretty hesitant to subject my respiratory system to the ingredients in many of those cartridges.
  17. On the plus side, I expect all of my upper-body workout needs to be fully addressed. And then some.
  18. "A Trolley Named Desire" just doesn't roll off the tongue with the same gravitas.
  19. Anyone with the temerity to unironically use the term "street tacos" on the menu of a place that charges $16 for guac or $20 for queso deserves to be horsewhipped.
  20. When I think of street tacos, I think small size (4"-5" tortillas), with two tortillas used per taco. The small size makes it easy to eat them on the go, after you've purchased them from a street vendor. The tacos at La Vibra on Yale may or may not be street tacos, depending on the strictness of your definition, and they're definitely not at the lower end of taco pricing, but they are unlike any other taco in Houston and come a lot closer to living up to Torchy's motto "Damn Good" than Torchy's does.
