  1. There's still a vacant space almost next door, just between S&T and Lone Star Taco in the Binz Building, which is partially visible in your photo. It's not a big space but it's also on the east side of the 500 block.
  2. Finally some glass installed on four lower floors of the original building, too:
  3. Still working on the brick, some of the mast climbers have been removed, and the link to the garage is now above ground:
  4. Not that fall protection will do much good when the thing they are tethered to falls down... But more seriously, I've been watching the work on the old Texaco building. Workers regularly walk on the edge of the roof, outside the railing, nearly 20 stories up, without attaching their harness to anything. I noticed it again on Thursday. I just don't understand -- do all these construction workers have death wishes?
  5. They've now started work on the rooftop patio/pool:
  6. Bus 82 is quite busy, too; I believe they are increasing its frequency to every 6 minutes at peak times to try to handle the ridership.
  7. Sorry for the potato-quality photo, but they've already started beautifying this corner. A month or so ago they put this mural up diagonally across the street, on the old Battlestein's build (next door to the JW Marriott):
  8. New grandstands, press box, and team facilities. http://news.rice.edu/2015/06/04/rice-to-build-new-soccer-track-and-field-facility/ http://news.rice.edu/2015/06/04/rice-to-build-new-soccer-track-and-field-facility-2/
  9. The Dunlavy is looking really nice tonight. Wish they'd light it up this well every night!
  10. They have now closed off the sidewalks and lanes adjacent to the building in preparation for construction: The ten 55-gallon drums (not visible; behind the van in the photo) appear to be from soil testing of the adjacent parking lot. They are labeled "soil cuttings" and "IDW purge water".
  11. From that PDF, it looks like the future tower isn't completely dead, because it's still referenced on the floor plan on page 9.
  12. That entire article is pointless because if you look at the numbers, you'll see that 2/3 of the men (but very few of the women) downtown live in places like the federal penitentiary and the county jail, so they don't exactly count, as they don't contribute to the streetlife or the bars/restaurants or anything like that. The true numbers would show that downtown is closer to a 60/40 male/female split. Of course, the Houston Chronicle doesn't care to do any actual reporting so they haven't figured that out.
  13. Unfortunately, the side facing downtown is the ugliest side of it, but at night it still looks nice with all the lights on the balconies. Sorry for the potato quality shot, but I had to zoom in to get it.
  14. I don't know how many there were. All I know is that photo is looking down Rusk from Main towards Travis, and there is the Second National Bank and Majestic Theater on the left side of Rusk there. The Chronicle building is 2 blocks to the right of that photo.
  15. No, that photo is of what is now the JW Marriott. It basically looks the same today, just without the clock and with a couple light rail lines on either side.
  16. Saw a giant cloud of dust rising from the building about 11:07. It was pure white, almost like steam or smoke. It dissipated within a couple minutes; by 11:09 everything was clear. Couldn't figure out what it was, but then I saw a bunch of workers on the roof running so I knew something bad had happened. Checked HFD/HPD active incidents but nothing was there. So sad to hear that this is what it was. Hope the construction workers all recover.
  17. Although it isn't much, at least they are doing something about the dollar store at Main and Walker. According to this article they will be putting a rotating art installation up to cover that boring blank façade. http://blog.chron.com/primeproperty/2015/10/main-street-art-project-to-bring-color-to-downtown/
  18. There's absolutely no way the Texaco development will be done anytime soon. Just last week I saw the first progress on the roof in months -- they installed some ductwork for the HVAC system. At least they seem to have finally finished the framework for the big structure they added to the north part of it.
  19. Scaffolding above the pedestal is now down. It's unfortunate how boring this looks; the only saving grace is half the block is empty and a better looking building could be built to block the view of this.
  20. But a different article posted elsewhere on this site (sorry, can't remember where I found it) said that downtown was still doing fairly well compared to the rest of the city.
  21. I wish they had covered it in concrete (even a thin layer) so it would have at least fit in with the Brutalist style of the rest of the building. But there's really not much they could have done to make it not look out of place.
