Proposed waterways. The "North Canal" at the top would allow better control of floodwaters during storms, which would allow the promenade canal along Commerce Street to function in much the same manner as San Antonio's River Walk.

I find it interesting that I've frequented this website for many years but never heard anything about these two different canals. Thanks for the information.

Maybe if Texas legalized gambling the owner of Landry's would build a giant bayou casino that could resemble something like what they envisioned.

There is actually a proposal in front of the State Legislature this year. It would allow for up to 6 Urban Casinos and 2 Beach/resort casinos in the state. The bill is written in a way where they would have to be high quality (minimum  $ amount), and would have to be supported by the city. I am thinking one would be perfect for downtown somnewhere in between the Covention Center Ditrict, the Stadiums, anf the Bayou.

I'm sure someone else has more info on this proposal.

I'm not at all opposed to casinos in Texas, but I rather think that they are something of a zero sum proposition. Yes, they generate tax revenue and tourism(ish) activities, but after visiting Biloxi pre-Katrina, I couldn't shake the impression that they were just islands of development in the middle of an area that is exactly as it ever was.  When discussing casinos, I get the impression that proponents oversell the positive impact to the community at large.

That said, a place like Galveston really has nothing to lose in this regard. It would go from a third rate tourism spot to a second rate tourism spot.

I say turn the Astrodome into one giant casino.   And rename the Texans next door to the old Houston USFL team name.   What a great tie in that would be.

Nate99 - I don't think it would be a zero-sum proposition.  For Texas at least.   How much $$$ do we send already on casino-bus and day trips to Louisiana already just from the Houston area.   A huge portion of that would stay local.   It would hurt Louisiana tremendously - but oh well.

when will construction start on the north canal and what is the likely hood it will be built like the buffalo bayou master plan? i hope they dont just dig a canal with intentions on coming back to develop it later, but thats probably what will happen. i agree with baracus that the south canal seems kind of pie in the sky-ish right now. that would probably be one of the later phases of the project once the rest of it starts to prove its viability.

i was looking at a map to try to get an idea of the feasibility of the South Canal.. it looks like Canal Place is built directly in the path of where the South Canal was planned, so they would either have to tear down a perfectly good, new apartment complex, or reroute the canal. there are also a few 1 story buildings in the plots of land downtown that would be needed to be removed first (though that part wouldnt be too difficult to figure out id imagine, since they were able to figure out how to relocate the buildings in the way of the north canal). i realize the South Canal at this point is just fantasy and wouldnt happen anytime soon.. just interested in the small possibility that it ends up happening, in some shape or fashion.

i guess no one knows if they are going to build the North Canal out to the master plan specs or if they are just digging a trench for now?
