Another thing that may be off topic is that there aren’t a lot of small food marts/convenience stores. It would be awesome to have more scattered around the neighborhoods for essentials that don’t warrant a trip to the grocery store. For example, the area around the MKT Development could desperately use one of these, especially with the Standard apartment complex and the rising Fairfield on Shepherd. Any ideas on how I could rally up some of the neighborhoods to request a local market to pop up around the area?

My wife and I ate there on Saturday and it was very good. But be warned, the dining room is small with only about six tables. It was crowded so we ended up eating outside at a table that was basically protected from the wind, but it was still kinda cold.

Le Cafe Josephine is the new name for Neo Baguette. According to Culture Map Houston article.

"Opened in 2018, the restaurant's owners rebranded to eliminate confusion about it being a bakery that sold baguettes, a representative tells CultureMap. The new name pays homage to general manager-owner Noor Chaabi's mother."

I kinda dig it. I wonder if this means La Grand Rue will return and Sip gets a stand alone home across the street?

Enjoyed the Taqo folks but always hoped the lot and property would get a bit more love. Maybe this is what gets it that. So much room and potential for patio and a touch of landscaping.

Steak house concept to replace La Grande Rue.

The real test of this place will be if they can do a good flat white.

Yep.  If you can't do a good flat white, you don't deserve to call yourself Australian, or even Australian-inspired.

I haven't had a great flat white since I got back to Houston.  Any recommendations?

New Zealand is the birth place of the flat white.  Don't let Bruce and Shelia sell you on some tale about Aussie's inventing the flat white.

Baristas in the US generally do not work with milk foam the way they do in Europe.  The difference between a flat white and latte/cappuccino end up being not much more than the proportions of milk to espresso.

Catalina is definitely one of the best.  I would also add Tenfold as having pretty good coffee chops.  Little Dreamer (in a little shipping container at the Stomping Grounds in GOOF) is also one to try for coffee nerds.

Sorry.  I guess "Moon Rabbit" is a pretty popular restaurant name these days.

The Houston version is doing take out only right now.  Here is the menu:

TABC notice for "Peony and Crane" at 626 W 19th (previously a barber shop for a short time, one door to the east of Squabble).

Peony and Crane is doing a soft opening.  Interesting menu.

Houston Culture Map reported that ......

"Houston food influencer Abbas Dhanani has found a permanent home for his smash burger pop-up. Burger Bodega will open as a restaurant this summer in the former Cabo space at 4520 Washington Ave."

I went with Wikipedia, which states that flat whites were available in OZ about 20 years before NZ.  Doesn't matter to me.  I listen to both 2GB and RNZ, and watch Heritage Rescue, which seems to have moved to MāoriTV for the latest season.  (I used to sport an RNZI t-shirt when I was in college.  Got stopped by a Maori guy in New York because of it.)

Is there a Kiwi equivalent of Bruce and Sheila?

Big blow to the 'hood. Sounds like she will be opening more of a retail storefront nearby. . .

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/food-culture/restaurants-bars/article/Sonoma-in-the-Heights-wine-bar-to-close-June-26-17133472.php

Sonoma in the Heights, the wine bar at 801 Studewood, will close on June 26 after 10 years of operation in the Heights neighborhood.

Owner Farrah Cauley, who built three Sonoma Wine Bar concepts in Houston and Katy, said she was unable to continue her lease at the Heights location. Sonoma’s other locations at 2720 Richmond and 9920 Gaston Road in Katy are unaffected by this decision and will remain open.

“This was not the outcome I had hoped for after several months of negotiations with the landlord, but I had to make this extremely tough and sad decision based on what my business can afford,” she said of Sonoma in the Heights.

Sonoma could not come to terms with its landlord and lost its lease on Studewood.  But the Height's loss is the GOOF's gain.  Sonoma is moving to the Stomping Grounds development (which is finally seeing some momentum in building out restaurant tenants).

Central City Coop took over the space that used to be Steel City Pops on E. 20th.

Central City Coop bought the old Heights Lights and Things property on 25th and will re-open their brick and mortar store there soon.  They only had a short term lease on the storefront on E. 20th and got the boot in April.

So here is a question - the old Co-op and Birds Barber Shop building was being painted and had work going on today- what's happening there next?!

Leasing brochure, which should always be taken with several grains of salt, shows Kin by Evelyn.  She currently has stands at farmers markets and is no Top Chef Houston right now.

New grab and go concept from the chef who used to run Azzarelli's (more accurately the reincarnation of his grandfather's restaurant by the same name).  It is what is going in the new building at 4606 N. Main St., one door north of Tampico.  Sign went up recently and looks like they will be opening soon.  Not sure whether there will be dine in there will be.  Website only talks about grab and go.  Nice looking building, though.
