jmitch94
Can we alert the media about this Tweet at the chron. Business usually respond to being called out on social media especially if a few of us do it. Plus all their followers would see the tweet we sent at least. Works the same for facebook too.

Nole23
Here's the response from The Lancaster on Facebook after many complaints.... "Thank you for your feedback. Indeed, the decision to take down these two buildings was not an easy one for the owners, who are longtime native Houstonians, to make. The Lancaster Hotel, which was built in 1926 by their great-grandfather, is the family legacy and the historical structure they have saved for generations to come. However, next door, the structural integrity of the two vacant buildings has been very compromised. After consulting with engineers and architects, we learned that what it would take to get these buildings just to code, would not be feasible. This is not about 50 parking spaces. Long-term, the family plans to keep the architectural integrity of the Joseph Finger-designed Lancaster building and add a ballroom and guest rooms to the existing 93-room property. The family members do believe in keeping Houston’s history alive. That is why, in 1983, they invested significant dollars to transform the Auditorium Hotel, which what was then an eyesore of the Theater District, into the gem that it is today, The Lancaster and, in 2013, re-invested in the property to do a full-blown renovation to ensure its longevity. Regards, Brenda Anderson, General Manager"

Ross
The old structural integrity cop out. How is it a cop out? Are you arguing they should spend, for the sake of argument, $4 million to have buildings worth $1 million? Sometimes, it just isn't economically sound to rehab a building.
jgriff
It would cause economic harm to the family that owns this property to force them to keep it as is. If these buildings are to be saved someone needs to compensate them for that.

It may not be true at all, but they figure nobody will argue if they believe the building isn't structurally sound. They say it's not about the parking spaces, but in the end, it really is. They need some convenient parking spaces and there is nothing to protect old buildings in Houston. It's a lazy excuse and it's completely driven short sighted decision making.

The expense to keep old structures is high. Just because it is high does not mean they should be torn down instead.

How much of your money are you willing to give to the owners to rehab the buildings? Or, do you just want to use the police power of the City to force the owners to spend the money to satisfy your aesthetic values?
