Historic Houston Shopping Places

I once picked up a business associate from Dallas at IAH and was driving in I-45 when the freeway jammed up (imagine that?).  Looking around, I departed the right lane and headed across the grass over to the service road, as were many others.  My Dallas companion (read 'uptight, anal') hollered, What are you doing?,  You can't do this!".  Later I bought him a beer at the Alabama Ice House and educated him on Houston's easy tolerant culture.

aggieengineer,

There was a Paul and Bill's meat market near the intersection of Griggs Road and Redwood Street, just north of the Gulf Freeway.

I was brought up in the small neighborhood just to the west of Griggs Road (Marlo Place) and frequently walked to the market back in the '50's and early '60's. There was an open field just adjacent to it which has become an Hispanic social venue, I believe. Behind it were the Redwood Apartments, government subsidized housing which is still there. Across Griggs Road (and the railrod tracks) was Pecan Park.

I think that the building is still there but I don't know what business is housed there.

Ye Olde College Inn across Main St from Rice U.  Food to die for.

The San Jacinto Inn (or something like that) by the ship channel.  All

           the oysters you could eat.

Mentioned before, but no response... Der Hofbrergartten beer hall with

various animals on display, all the beer you could drink, and a real

oom-paw band that we all danced to.

Somewhere in the Friendswood area.  Long gone.

Interesting thread.  I attended Spring Branch Junior High, back in the day.  What was the gas station next door, a Conoco?  I think that later become a "food place" and even later a "plant house".

The first JITB i remember was in the Heights in the 60s, I think it lasted a long time.  I bought a lot of jeans at Bilao's on US90/I10.  Thanks for sparking some good memories!  It's amazing how things change.

US 90 / I-10 was certainly a focus for shopping places of the 50s-60s-70s era.  Bilao's Department Store was certainly prominent, I remember getting paper book jackets with their advertising on them.  I can also remember the Western Skies Motel, but that is really way back.  On Bunker Hill just south of the highway, there was a small center with (I think) a Lewis & Coker grocery store,  a so-called dime store, and a mexican restaurant.  Also a drugstore owned by a Mr Yee, as well as a U-Tote-Em convenience store.  For a while, there was also a place called Cumming's Cupboard, which offered very good chocolate milk shakes for the astounding price of 35 cents.

Houston Jewelry is the same as it was downtown in the 50's & 60's....jewelry & gifts....before they built the big store out at the end of town at westheimer and gessner when it was just ranch land in the early 70's

Bain & Co....Romney's company was involved in the purchase of United Jewelers from Gordon's Jewelers in the mid 1980's after it was spun off by Bain it failed a few years later and Service took a few of their locations

not a weird name when your last name is Weiner.....they were/are super super nice people...

Joske's did not have a Meyerland location. The large stores there were Meyer Bros, Walter Pyes [which is now Pinto Ranch....] Palais Royal and JC Penny's. Woolworths and a grocery store....

Ahhh. Houston Jewelry. Service Merchandise took its place (at least the Gessner and Westheimer location). I remember how you would have to fill out a ticket and go to this weird desk to actually purchase the items. No shopping carts or stock was on the floor; it was all "showroom".

OMG. My youngest brother had her in '65-'66. My other brother was a year ahead of him.

Ashikaga, where did you live in Park Place? We lived off of Old Galveston Road and my grandparents lived on Easton.

Does anybody know if the Old Chuck Wagon still exists in Park Place? And for shopping centers--is Palm Center still around?

And y'all were talking about Playhouse Toys-does anyone remember the one at Gulfgate? It had a giant giraffe head over the stairs that led down to the ground floor. I still dream about that wing of Gulfgate and that giraffe, no clue why.

Palm Center still exist but does not have retail. It is more of a business park, with clinics, social services and Urban Harvest has a community Garden there
