  1. I've got the only definitions that count unless you've published your own dictionary. You used a word. You were called on the definition by two world renowned sources and you tell us "it has a much more benign definition that can be changed within the context of its use." Your smarmy cracks about dictionary use, me helping you educate a fellow HAIFer...it's just more BS dude. BTW, Red was just pointing out that "idealogue" isn't a word.
  2. Three blocks of shops, clubs, offices and condos? I'm betting it can't hurt. I'll even buy you your first drink!
  3. Bingo. Give the man a prize. BTW, when I travel, I really don't do so to shop at a mall or Big Box Plaza. I travel for the different cultural and arts venues available. If conventioneers bring their spouses, they may want to go to the Galleria or Pavillions. But I'm with danax-unless I'ma havin' a hankerin' fer a trip to Marshall's with Uncle Cletus-Gulfgate wouldn't be on my list. Just fill the place up with the usual crap, put a big rotating sign on top thats says Crap-Iz-Us and call it a day.
  4. "Theoretically, City Council could designate the River Oaks Theater and Shopping Center without owner approval, but that would require that they go against the wishes of a major real estate developer. That is extremely unlikely to happen." That was from GHPA in reply to my email. It's great to have a petition but it is equally to apply pressure on city council and the mayor.
  5. You beat me too it Kinkade...I was emotionaly involved at the moment. Seriously though, it's a fight worth fighting and I welcome all with the ability to display and use their emotions to join this passionate fight.
  6. 'uncertaintraveler' Any further discussion with you regarding land rights use is pointless. We know your position and we also have seen you demonize those who just want to save a couple of the remaining pieces of Houston's history. All my side has is overwhelming public opinion and the Historic Preservation Ordinance. Your side involves very powerful people with seemingly little or no regard of the importance of history and community. Unfortunatly for Houston, your side normally wins. Maybe for once we can affect a change in this myopic attitude of bulldoze, pave and build at any cost.
  7. I suggest you hook up with Niche and construct a strip center from Shepherd to DT on both sides of Allen Parkway. Who needs trees, parks and trails when the city could reap big $$ in tax revenues...you could even fix it so you dump your sewage right out the back and into the Bayou. I'm thinking a few dry cleaners, some liquor stores, a couple of high-rise residential units with garages on the bayou and then maybe just pave over the rest until you're ready to put in your Walmart. Seriously, to answer a previous question: No. You don't get it-and it doesn't really impact what may or may not happen anyway.

  9. ss wins today's trivia question! http://www.mikerobinson.net/postcards/10frntgate.JPG
  10. I posted the 2 picture because both are Weingarten owned. It's indicative of where there aesthetics lie. Don't be surprised if they build that big hulk of a B & N backed up to the furthest N property line with a sea of parking accessable from W. Gray and Shepherd-just like most B & N's. I think you and I are basically on the same page, However. I have no problem with redeveloping portions-I have a problem with the sensibilities of the people doing it. BTW, I do think at the present moment their intent is to tear down the theatre. They did it in the Village despite some very vocal protests. BACH!!!!!!!!!
  11. Thank you for that. Now that I see your idea of what the measure of a man is: one with a big home in a compound that pops beer cans at funerals, I can understand you better.
  12. I'm concerned that we are going to lose another peice of our city's history and heritage at the expense of just more crap. Personally, I'd like to see the entire original center receive historical landmark status. If not landmark status, I see no problem in redevelopment in keeping with the current style-which is possible while saving the theatre at the same time. I don't have a problem with the mix of retail-most of it already seems to be doing a steady buisness. In any event, would you rather have this: or keep this?
  13. So you're sure they'll just replace these highly successful stores with crap that the people in River Oaks and surrounds will shun?
  14. Just because you're related to trailer trash doesn't mean you have to emulate the behavior. My nephew has lived in Mobile for almost 5 years now. He came home for my dad's funeral. No beer can pop-topping was to be seen or heard. I guess your brand of Alabamaism hasn't rubbed off on him yet.
  15. They already frequent Talbot's and Jos. A. Banks-have for years as well as: Ann Taylor Encore Bank Chico's GAP, GAP Body Nextel Gymboree TGF Precision Haircutter's Black-Eyed Pea Restaurant The Honey Baked Ham Company Design Within Reach Sur La Table Allstate Insurance Jamba Juice Kroger La Madeleine French Bakery & Cafe Marble Slab Creamery Many national credit tenants and all highly successful not to mention locals that are highly successful as well. But don't worry, I'm betting your market-based crap with be coming soon.
