  1. That jittery red circle was the outcome of me trying really hard to not make it crazy looking!
  2. This is the post image button: Meme is right - you have to have the image hosted/uploaded somewhere to use that function. Tinypic.com is the one I use away from my web site. Another option is to upload a photo here by clicking the Browse button in the lower right hand part of the reply window:
  3. Or the owner... Nice house, but the neighbors are disappearing one by one.
  4. Does anyone know the cost of the Sagemont cross? The Effingham cross (28ft taller) was apparently around $1,000,000 and is made of 180 (?) tons of steel - Sagemont's is only 90 tons though. The only financial stuff I could find about anything wasn't about the cross, but was kind of...interesting: -The debt was paid in 14 months; and just a few months later, 300 families gave their total income for 40 days to the Lord
  5. I didn't have much time last time around, so I actually went to the Sears optical on Main and Wheeler - eye exam/dilation, lenses and frames, and it was decent and fast.
  6. Putting a call in to Stan Watkins might help identify viewing areas. I'll try if I get a chance.
  7. ^Maybe the Droubi's that used to be on Kirby and Main? The historicaerials.com 1981 map of Meyer and Hardy show something that looks like a rail car at the SW corner of the intersection: http://www.historicaerials.com/?poi=4329
  8. Records show that the property changed hands from the Wilshire Village Corp. (run by J. Howard Cohen and registered in 1939) to Dilick in November 2002. In 2002 it was Flat Stone II (run by Dilick) and then it changed to Alabama & Dunlavy Ltd c/o Commerce Equities (both of which are run by Dilick). I can't find any association between Cohen and Flat Stone, Alabama & Dunlavy, or Commerce Equities, but that doesn't mean one doesn't exist. Current tax rolls show Jay H. Cohen owning a LOT of small, old, almost worthless homes in the 77004/77020 zip codes.. Here are the corporations' information: -Wilshire Village Corp. (J. Howard Cohen) -Flat Stone II Ltd. (Matthew Dilick) -Alabama & Dunlavy Ltd. (Matthew Dilick) -Commerce Equities (Matthew Dilick)
  9. Just a brief comment - WOW, Detroit's drop out rate is 78.3% ! edit - wow, they're all crappy rates (most less than 50%)
  10. ^Geez...maybe that deserves its own topic... edit: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...showtopic=19426
  11. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/6280447.html The U.S. Postal Service is selling the downtown post office after 47 years of sorting and delivering mail from the 16-acre operation. Whoever buys the property at 401 Franklin must build a replacement processing facility for the postal service, as well as provide a retail location near the existing site where consumers can mail packages and buy stamps.
  12. No comment! But you could say that about anything or anyone, it doesn't make it necessarily so. There are always wretched ones in any bunch, but I'd take the government any day for regulatory power over a large private entity.
  13. It's unfortunate, but you could say that about any entity. All's left is reform.
  14. Yeah, it was built by the Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church which is just a couple blocks south on Hadley.
  15. With a small hike in your rate and no unusual activity on your part, something else seems to be sucking your electricity (faulty appliance? neighbor?). That's a huge jump, even if you average it out over the past couple months...can you look up how many kWh used this time last year?
  16. Yikes - definitely check your kWh usage, your rate for that bill, and cross reference the number on your meter. I had a huge jump like that once, but it turned out to be a problem with the AC unit running inefficiently (and it wasn't summer, but still).
  17. I think it may be a Robert G. Durst v. a Robert A. Durst (or something like that).
  18. ^I agree, and thanks to Ben for posting it.
  19. I had some of the Kroger king cake (comes in the box pictured above with the choking hazard). They had two kinds - regular and filled (the one I had was vanilla-filled). There's the icing on top, then vanilla icing-like stuff leaking all over. It was the most sugary food I've eaten in recent memory, but it was actually pretty good.. The golden baby was pretty creepy, though, outstretched arms and all..
  20. ^It's now Greenway Court apartments, and I would have never known.. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source...000000000000017 http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&...1&encType=1
  21. Unfortunately, like others have mentioned, the Chronicle leaves out a lot (including a source to see the text of this proposal). The article mentions "The proposal has aroused critics who say the city should not use public funds to help people pay down car loans, credit card balances, or other debts" - specifically highlighting credit cards and cars, even if the "other debts" make up some portion of what this is going toward. But who really knows.. This is all I could find so far, from the City Council agenda: 21. ORDINANCE deappropriating $444,064.90 from the TIRZ Affordable Housing Fund 2409 (Fund 2409) under Ordinance No. 2008-828 for the Temporary Emergency Home Repair Program (“TEHRP”) in connection with Hurricane Ike Damage; approving and authorizing guidelines for a New Credit Score Enhancement Program; reappropriating $386,390.00 from Fund 2409 to a New Credit Score Enhancement Program, including delivery costs; and reappropriating $57,674.90 to the TEHRP for Project Delivery Costs
  22. If your credit score isn't great (and you have some credit history), it's probably because you have derogatory account(s), make late payments, or have a high debt to credit ratio. Maybe not the best time to buy a home..
  23. There is now a list from this thread pinned at the top of the Houston Mod forum
