  1. They are, indirectly sometimes - just ask their community relations/corporate giving department
  2. Yeah, HCAD lists the Dowling theater area as "SSBB" but I haven't found a reference to what that stands for (block book maps and HAR don't spell it out either, but it's probably something obvious I am not thinking of). edit - the above is my little tangential rant about not knowing what SSBB stands for
  3. HCAD has the subdivision name under the "legal description," though sometimes they are the survey/abstract names (SSBB, etc) or major location name (City Hall, etc). Those legal description (subdivision/survey) names are the ones used for the Harris County Block books, though.

  7. Oh yeah, forgot about Wilshire Village apartments. It's definitely run-down, but not closed.
  8. 7:00 pm Monday, February 9, 2009 Social Life of Small Urban Spaces (60 minutes, 1988, William H. Whyte) Whyte's classic 1980 study of New York's plazas started a mini-revolution in urban planning and design. In the 1970
  9. Rice Cinema / De Lange Conference VII: Transforming the Metropolis 7:00 pm Monday, February 2, 2009 Megacities: 12 Stories of Survival (1998, 90 minutes, directed by Michael Glawogger) Megacities is a documentary that deals with the human experiences of work, poverty, violence, love and sex. It is a film about human beauty in twelve chapters which tells the tales of people from Bombay, Mexico City, Moscow and New York, who are all struggling for survival, with ingenuity, intelligence and dignity. They all share the dream of a better life in the Big City at the dawn of a new millennium. A time when
  10. Here's the view from live maps: http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&...1&encType=1
  11. Dunlavy runs from Bissonnet to Allen Parkway, and I can't recall anything terrible... There are restaurants, bars, and stores where it meets Westheimer (like kylejack mentioned) and is a pretty busy area, and there's also a lot of retail where it meets W Gray.
  12. The monthly maintenance fees of some of those places are pretty bad (in addition to a 150-200k payment/mortgage)...
  13. ^Thanks for posting - I need to order that book soon. Google has a decent preview, too: http://books.google.com/books?id=R6XDCyvuG...uston#PPA227,M1
  14. Boudain. Anyone have suggestions on a good restaurant for it? I like crawfish, but not whole. It's the whole eating-something-with-a-face-still-attached phobia I have...
  15. This is near Fondren - yes, it's ugly out there, but not that ugly
  16. Yeah, Clyde Drexler owns a lot of that block.. The mystery to me still is why there's no HCAD listing for the structure (or why I can't find it)..
  17. ^Thanks - I noticed this just now from KPRC: http://www.click2houston.com/news/18546801/detail.html#- bah!
  18. 2002: Trammell Crow Co. -- owner of the 178,00-square-foot property located near the posh Houston neighborhood for which the center is named -- has inked a deal with discount clothing retailer Marshalls to join the other national tenants in the high-profile center. Located near the corner of West Gray and Waugh Drive, River Oaks Plaza is home to clothing retailer T.J. Maxx (also owned by Framingham, Mass.-based Marshalls Inc.), Office Max, Luby's, Souper Salad and Cafe Express. Trammell Crow's Liz Jacobs leased the space to Marshalls. She says since the theater closed, interest in the shopping center's vacant space has been high. [...] The theater was one of the original tenants in the center, which opened in 1990. http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/stories...ewscolumn3.html
  19. If memory serves, which it rarely does, it was torn down and I think Marshalls is there now (?) --- edit - ^yep, I'm thinking of the right spot
  20. Oh, and the theater has 2106 spraypainted on it, but 2106 lists no building data (vacant land), and as lot 4...?
  21. Quick question about identity theft... Recently I received an email thanking me for a product I purchased - I knew I hadn't, and when I called to cancel/get more information, I found out which credit card was used (and cancelled it), and that they had my correct address, email, and name, but a different social security number, birth date, and past address on file. Oh, and the funny part about this was that it was an identity-theft prevention service (from something called Lifelock). Over the next couple of days I have been getting more weird emails/calls: A company called Pacific Web Works had an order from me (for something scammy called "Yahoo Search Success" or something) with the credit card I had already cancelled, and then I got a bunch of calls from "Google Money Tree" insisting I inquired online about it. Both of those companies come up with tons of scam complaints when Googled... And today, I get an email thanking me for my order from a book-of-the-month club (bomc2.com). I called and cancelled everything, but these folks had my correct email and address. The only card that has come up in all of this has been long cancelled, and nothing else is going on with any of my other accounts. I also started the 90-day fraud alerts on my credit reports.. Did I just get on a bad database or something??
  22. Does anyone know anything about the Dowling Theater on Dowling between Gray and Webster? At some point I had the address as 2110 Dowling (which Cinema Houston backs up), but I can't find any tax information about it. The location where I found the theater matches 2110 Dowling as well. Also, the MFAH's "Eye on Third Ward" lists a Dowling Theater being on the site of the Square Deal Cab Co. The address I found for Square Deal is 2819 Dowling (placing it at Tuam St.). Was there more than one Dowling? On the Harris County Block Book photo, lot 3 matches up (and here's the HCAD map), but HCAD doesn't list ownership of a lot 3: 2100 Dowling - lot 5 2106 Dowling - lot 4 2116 Dowling - TRS 1 and 2 2120 Dowling - TR 1B picture:
  23. I really like this home (minus the bars) and the price is great. I'd totally be in the market if it wasn't for certain economic catastrophes of late...alas!
  24. The congestion charge can be pricey (8 GBP ~ $11), but I think it's an interesting idea in theory.. "If you drive in central London between 7.00 am and 6.00 pm, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) you will have to pay the
  25. I was thinking about the same thing the other day - a couple years ago (?) Houstonist recommended Acadian, and on my search, this place was the only bakery that google seemed to like for Houston (in Spring, though): http://www.raosbakery.com/products2.asp http://www.nextdaykingcake.com/
