  1. I didn't get a picture of the side facing Washington (Swamplot has one here, though), but the butterflied second story is coming along...
  2. It just seems that in any other city some entity would have grabbed this house already (for 100k!) and restored it. Our city doesn't do much like that, GHPA doesn't have the financial resources, and individuals with money to rehabilitate old larger homes are few and far between.
  3. I'm still ruminating over the discrimination toward white middle class males issue, but meanwhile, can somewhere throw out some numbers on welfare amounts/types/recipients (and a reference please)?
  4. Does anyone remember (or have photos) of the original fa
  5. Does anyone know more specifically what the conditions were like there? And why it became that way toward the end (I'm assuming) of when the HFD used/owned it? I couldn't find any articles about the conditions of the building - I'm not surprised about asbestos, but that's not a huge dealbreaker on renovations.
  6. Yep, that's where I got the Lanesborough apartment information. I can't find anything else about the building, though, or why the hell the owner is letting it sit and deteriorate so badly. Yet another irresponsible owner's handiwork on that corner.
  7. ^Yeah, I kind of get the airbrushed feel from it. I would never get a personalized plate, but the State of the Arts (Texas Commission on the Arts) or Keep Texas Wild (Texas Parks and Wildlife Department) look decent and the majority of the fee goes to support the organizations.
  8. Stupid people get good jobs, and smart people don't sometimes. Gross generalizations don't help. Also, by your tinfoil description of our society, we do live in a socialist nation - until you get your secluded piece of land, protect it and yourself, make all of the roads and improvements, find somewhere to put your waste, and educate yourself/family, getting more comfortable with it might save you a trip to the cardiologist.
  9. I found the HCAD record - it is owned by the Lanesborough folks: TEXAS SFI PARTNERSHIP 33 LTD http://www.hcad.org/records/details.asp?ta...t=0440920010165 All the 2008 data is blank...
  10. The old station may be small and a little blah, but maybe the rendering will be like the site says: "The actual station may not appear exactly like this graphic." Another fire station I like is #33 on Fannin at Braeswood - the one HFD sold/abandoned to build the new one a little ways down the road. Bleh. I'll start a new topic on this one though: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...showtopic=19495
  11. Does anyone know the history of the old 33 station at the corner of Fannin and Braeswood? It was replaced several years ago (now at 7117 Fannin), and has been wasting away ever since. It's a neat building, and I am having a hard time finding it on HCAD... This is all the COH site says about it: Firehouse 33 helds the unique distinction of being one of the last stations to be housed in an original volunteer station—it being the city hall/fire station of the Brasewood section of Houston at the corner of Fannin and Brasewood and was annexed in 1950. I'll post some pictures soon, but here's the streetview: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source...800000000000003 Also, someone mentioned in another thread that it might be owned by the folks who own the Lanesborough apartments nearby...
  12. They may actually have to drop it from $2 million each to $750,000 at this rate...!
  13. Yeah, and according to the rendering, those three little windows will have a direct view of the neighbor's wall (maybe with no windows also) that looks like it will be about a car's width away..
  14. Also, the Savoy is mentioned in the Winter 2009 issue of Cite, along with its old peers the Beaconsfield and the Rossonian..
  15. No offense to any hard-core partisans (or neo-McCarthyists?!) but the tired rhetoric comes from every direction.
  16. Here's the dedication story from KPRC: http://www.click2houston.com/news/18830830/detail.html#- My favorite quote: "I don't know of anything that Houston needs to see more than the cross of Jesus Christ." -Rev. John Morgan
  17. ^There are some decent priced townhomes/condos in the areas you mentioned - they just have to be prepared to pay an additional $300-700/month in fees in most cases. Considering the selling price, though, the mortgage payment wouldn't be all that much..
  18. It will be interesting to see legislature's upcoming education budgets for public schools... Meanwhile, private schools' endowments are shrinking and faculty, operating expenses, and tuition costs are taking a major hit:
  19. Here are some of the pictures from the old listing:
  20. I went there Saturday - looked like nothing out of the ordinary was going on (no signs of moving, etc).
  21. ^Maybe just a sloppy listing with old information they forgot to take out. And that's 5 million for the lot...not 500k
  22. Yeah, that price range might be met going farther west. Don't forget to add in possible hefty monthly association fees for a townhome/condo in addition to what you paid/are paying for it.
