  1. so in texas, is the reasoning of raising the limits something that "better reflects the actual speed of cars" (like in iowa)? granted, many people drive well over the speed limits, but some, especially on rural roads, tend to drive waaaay under. if difference in speed is the main cause for collisions (which i think it is), then we'll see the accident rate on texas roads skyrocket...

    Moving On

    hehe...my thoughts exactly
  3. yeah, the three would go well in one section (even though southside place is teeny - still need a place to rant about the cops...heh) and i like the idea of the nostagic-based section. so you can raise it to three member requests
  4. as far as proximity to 290, heights and northwest of there (tc jester-ish area) might be a good place to look...back roads to 290 can be alright...(right now i commute (non-reverse) from 290 and hollister to the med center area, all road, no freeway).
  5. my only paranormal-related experiences had to do with cold spots in the basement (during the middle of summer). friends (on separate occasions), though, have described strikingly similar instances of viewing a girl on the third floor... i never really have been in tune with any paranormal related things, but the cold was there...!
  6. and marilyn oshman (board of directors) also was the original preservationist of the orange show
  7. first to astro - do you live in an original house in bellaire, or are you in one built recently? as far as saving the older homes - yes, some are in disrepair and may not be worth restoring to some. i witnessed several friends' homes (i grew up in bellaire) go on the wayside because their parents couldn't afford to maintain it because of the rising cost of living...and eventually, they had to move away. a few of the newer homes i have seen are nice looking to me - and somewhat original...but they are few and far between (imo). they are also really really close to the neighbors, they have teeny backyards for the most part, and they are constructed rather quickly i have noticed. they are also causing ecological issues... and bellaire is having to overhaul sewage and draining systems because they is so much more crap and water to deal with. and to redscare - i agree that there might be a certain mindset when one buys a "mcmansion." alot of the neighbors are young, have boring jobs that must pay well, have at least two really nice cars, and maybe a kid or two (oh - can't forget about that debt!). they seem like nice people with different priorities, perhaps.
  8. i think it is an awesome idea...but there are SO many homes here!
  9. so many good things! -i especially love those drives into downtown at sunset/sunrise from ANY direction... -gotta love half price (ex-worker too...good place to work for) -chemical sunsets - pretty colors! lol -jeff mckissack - my hero (i used to work at the orange show too) and for some more: -the beer can house and other architectural oddities (thank you, orange show) -the art car parade (again, oshow) -antique stores in the heights
  10. it looks nice - it does looked kind of like a squished SUV - how is the interior? (lots of space i imagine) i would hope the squished look wouldn't give way to only "coffin-sized" items in the back...lol btw - that is texas co. building and stowers in the background, no?
  11. i agree with danax...i am considering moving to a neighborhood that has all the original houses (1940's) and is mostly families with kids. the homes go for around 100,000 or so. i have told some people about this, and i got the immediate "oh my god you want to move THERE?" response. come to find out it is not based on the neighborhood itself, but rather the ethnic diversity. i couldn't believe it! and also, the "middle class-ness" of bellaire, west university and the galleria is more of a higher financial category...new homes in Bellaire are surmounting one million dollars! (the cheapie new ones are about 600K).
  12. wal-mart in teotihuacan mexico now that's walmart-ization for ya!
  13. hey everyone...i just wanted to get some of your input on the housing changes that have begun in the past decade or so in Bellaire. Twenty years ago, the houses were quite "cookie-cutter" one story homes. Today, these homes are being bulldozed at a high rate and are being replaced with larger, more "modern" two to three story homes that cover alot more area of the original lots. living there, or just observing, what is going to be the fate of Bellaire in the next decade? what do you think about the issues that could come into play here, such as ecology or the skyrocketing prices?
  14. is this location job related, or just price-friendlier for you? i have been living near 290 and hollister for a couple months now...it is "apartment row" there - many larger complexes, many people, many fast food choices, and a whole lotta concrete! the problem is, most of these apartment complexes were built "nicer" (ie crown molding, blahblahblah) but are having to cut rent drastically to get people in. i know that they advertise my unit for about $750 a month - and we definitely don't pay that - and nor do the neighbors. the crime is a little higher around there, but mostly limited to auto theft and burglary. i am hesitant to say they are much different than any other complexes in the city... anyhow, i would recommend flying by the area between 610 and the belt on 290....stick to jones road area, like Toolman suggested...
  15. chances are, if you live in bellaire (especially 4400-4600 blocks) you either live really close to the tracks or to 610. living there for some years, i did get used to it. the only thing is, if one was to put down those big bucks to buy a home there (especially where the lots are even smaller near the tracks) the noisy train issue might be of importance (not only money-wise, but perhaps safety as well if you have children).
  16. maybe the astros should move back to the astrodome and minute maid can be used for mud wrestling...hehe
  17. i would like to go in the hotel just to say i have been in there - i like that they kept the hotel cotton inlay at the door, and the barely readable hotel cotton sign on the top of the back of the building (although now that i think about it, it is there probably due to laziness or neglect rather than for any historical significance...heh... there are a few buildings around there that keep me in the area once in a while to check out progress, etc., like the texaco building, texas state hotel (now club quarters), stowers, and west/beatty building - i have heard of these plans to renovate the west building - we'll just have to wait and see
  18. i will be happy when it is calhoun again it was reported that the "tenants" were paying rent in some form - i suppose to the maharishi that still own it now...the police said that they couldn't find anyone "in charge" and that no one was in the 20th floor office of the maharishi institute when they went there to investigate some complaints. i suppose it is about the same today, except people have to find new and unusual ways in now...heh
