  1. I have always liked Morgan's Point. It seems very isolated from LaPorte proper but I also didn't realize La Porte was having crime issues either. I say if you have a good deal on something go for it! You can't beat living near the White House (or facsimile of)! oh yeah..and there used to be that little beer joint at the old ferry landing. I guess its still there.
  2. i am not a vegetarian but the Hobbit Cafe on Richmond has some good vegetarian dishes. Plus its a great place to sit out on the patio and drink their homemade lemonade.
  3. Ditto that. A good read and still very relevant today.
  4. see the complete article here: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/deaths/3819603.html
  5. the power companies have to pay to be included on the houston list. the state site lists all companies doing business.
  6. i've heard of it. from what i gather it was just a big old house where an old lady lived and didn't like kids coming onto her property. in the 60's some kids had some "exaggerated" tales of the witch chasing them etc. I think the house is still there in the cul-de-sac.
  7. The parts of the lakes i have seen were shallow and marshy. I think duck hunters are out there more than anyone else.
  8. i think you mean Taste of Texas. Texas land and cattle is a chain with several houston locations.
  9. I am not up to date on current regulations but it used to be that hurricane straps were not required that far north. I believe all of Galveston county requires them and the parts of Harris County near Clear Lake. The state sets a minimum requirement based on the windstorm risk zones. Individual communities can increase the requirement in their own codes. There may be some minimal amount now required for all of Harris. any builders out there know?
  10. Amazing that the roofline appearance could make that big of a deal to the owners or to perspective buyers (assuming this is a flip). or maybe it will be a dormered second story??? hard to tell from your original pic but it does look like the old roof wasnt completely flat - so reroofing it to repair a badly maintained leak prone flat roof would be less of an excuse. Have they started stucco-ing over the brick yet?

    Mod Listings

In RPS' latest listing, there is this cool sink/vanity. has anyone seen one like this before in other houses? I think its pretty cool. I like the way the faucet is mounted on the angled surface.
  12. nice try subdude! maybe we should turn her in for theft of city property! > I am gonna have to find a way to make it up to the Rice Library and check out what they have in their files. It's just a little hard to do with a two-year old in tow...24/7
  13. Deepwater had a train station - according to this entry in the online Handbook of Texas http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online...s/DD/hrdwr.html I think the tracks used to run along 225 in that section of the highway (like they do east of Deer Park) but were realligned at some point to go up closer to the ship channel. So, since the station was at the townsite, then it should have been right there somewhere.
  14. I didn't grow up in Pasadena but I always assumed that it was right around SH225, Preston, and the Beltway. That is where Deepwater Junior High is and the HL&P Deepwater plant is on the ship channel roughly north of there. Maybe the joint transmitter plant was where where the KXYZ tower was(is?). I think its right there just west of Preston at 225. This may be it on the left of this google map i pulled up (between burke and preston). Note deepwater park on the right side of the map. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=pa...49,0.021629&t=h
  15. Brooke Smith is north of N.main, east of Airline, south of Cavalcade, and W. of I-45. The Target location would probably be considered 1st Ward. I think the dividing line between Sixth and First was Washington Ave. According to HCAD, the remaining house plats around the Target are in Oak Terrace. but i am sure no one would call it that all the stuff south of the RR tracks to Washington and to the east is in Shearn which is definately 1st Ward. Maybe it could be called Heights Freeway i agree
  16. since we are listing awful entrances...how about the SH35/Reveille entrance ramp straight into the fast lane of the NB Gulf Freeway! Sweet. It really gives my a rush and my car a workout trying to beat 18 wheelers before they plow into my backend! actually it seems most vehicles on the gulf frwy anticipate the people merging - so most of the time it isnt really too bad...as long as you don't get someone in front of you who gets scared and stops on the ramp!!!
  17. to elaborate on midtown coog's reply.... http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/archive....id=2005_3897554
  18. Sagemont (77089) has a large Vietnamese community. The area has become a lot more Hispanic lately but I believe there is still a large Asian presence. There are several Asian markets, Pho restaurants, etc. It's on the Southeast side, so it may not be exactly where you want to be. but, It has good access to the Beltway and I-45 and It's positioned sort of halfway between the Clear Lake (NASA) and Downtown. Crime is probably average. Pretty much a basic 70's suburban middle-working class community. Nothing too fancy.
  19. and pics of the exterior from when it was under construction and just opened
  20. Amarillo's Wonderland Amusement Park is getting the Mayan Mindbender (and the Gunslinger). Check out an article about that and Greazed Lightnin' here: http://www.amusementtoday.com/ Too bad the Cyclone didn't make it.
  21. I agree with both of those statements. I hate going to Walmart for that reason (oh and the fact that they are the evil empire too, ) The gulfgate HEB get's too packed. And definately a product selection that caters to working class hispanics. It has a very "mercado" feel. very different from the new HEB on Blackhawk...but i don't like going that far. I will stick with the Bellfort Kroger. Seems to have most of the basics i need. Grocery store feel circa mid 90's. We used to shop at the HEB Panty on Bellfort and it was fine. I really dunno if closing two HEB Pantry's (Bellfort and Harrisburg) to open Gulfgate was better for the community in the long run. Oh, and The bellfort fiesta is like shopping going into a 1970's time machine.
  22. I think Herman Dr has major construction on it right now.
  23. During spring break and on nice weekends it gets crazy, we park in the MFA parking garage and take the Light Rail. They close off the streets when the lots get to capacity.
  24. Washburn Tunnel opened May 27, 1950 (source: Harris County, Pct 2) Baytown Tunnel opened September 22, 1953 (source: TxDOT)
