  1. I don't think this helps you but...have you ever seen Marty Blaise's Houston Roads webpage. He has a few "current" pictures of old main st. He also has a few other interesting tidbits for roadgeeks like myself. http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/8610/oldmain.html
  2. i wouldn't doubt it. it IS wal-mart EDIT: i just seached the HBJ and whaddya know.... there is a walmart distribution center in Baytown AND Sealy! well then, we must build a new superhighway between them! ha!
  3. I went on Long and Telephone Road around Noon and saw water over the curb on pretty much every street in Golfcrest and some residents touring the area in boat. Also water was over Telephone Road up near Winkler and Broad. I also noticed water around the new Perry Home Plum Creek subdivison and those Village Way apartments. Dunno if it made it inside any of them.
  4. I am not sure about the Home Depot center but the Wal Mart Distribution Center is near Baytown/Beach City and not near Katy. Wal Mart is one of the main reasons that the east section of the Grand Parkway is currently under construction.

  11. yeah...i think geocaching would be fun. i like treasure hunts i think its federal property since addicks was a corps of engineers project (but it is certainly owned by some gov't entity and not a private individual) here is the appraisal record on the land. (notice lamb road is also noted on the appraisal district map too) http://www.hcad.org/records/details.asp?ta...t=0450650000055 heck i need mosquito repellent in MY HOUSE they are so bad over here.
  12. All the land is owned by the US gov't. I think the reservoir was a federal project. So if you are caught trespassing there, you will probably be shipped off to Gitmo as a terrorist.
  13. yeah..i have seen the ovals on that map before... and i saw the ovals again on a 1954 street map just the other day. it just keeps taunting me!!! where is google maps 1940 edition???
  14. I always thought it was due to altitude, i.e. that you can get away with running cars at lower octane in higher altitudes.
  15. if you don't know the history of Independence Heights, here is a summary from the Handbook of Texas: INDEPENDENCE HEIGHTS, TEXAS. Independence Heights was originally northeast of Houston in an area now within the Houston city limits, bounded on the south by Thirtieth Avenue, on the north by Fortieth Avenue, on the west by Yale Street, and on the east by Airline Drive in Harris County. The Wright Land Company secured the land, incorporated in 1910, and developed a new community for blacks. By doing their own financing they made it possible for people with small incomes to become homeowners. Resident contractors built most of the houses and churches. Independence Heights incorporated on January 25, 1915, when it had a population of 600. G. O. Burgess was the first mayor. The Houston Informer was the city newspaper. The Independence Heights School was established in 1911, and O. L. Hubbard was its first teacher. Churches organized while Independence Heights was a separate city were the New Hope Missionary Baptist, the Green Chapel African Methodist Episcopal, the St. Paul Colored Methodist Episcopal, the Ebenezer Methodist Episcopal, the Concord Missionary Baptist, and the North Main Church of God in Christ. Businesses included a cooperative store, grocery stores, cafes, and contractors. Some residents were employed in Houston, in Houston Heights, and in other areas. In 1920 Independence Heights had a population of 715. According to the Houston Post dated January 17, 1915, it was the first incorporated black city in Texas. In 1989 a Texas Historical Commissionqv marker was placed on the grounds of Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church to mark the city site. In November 1928 Independence Heights residents voted to dissolve the city's incorporation because of their desire to become a part of Houston. The area was annexed to Houston on December 26, 1929. i found this nice piece on Independence Heights on the Rice website: http://indepheights.rice.edu/
  16. Also some of the Gas in that part of NM - near Silver City - is 85 octane.

  19. The chron had several early pictures of Marvin (some from the fifties) with the feature they did on him last sunday in the Zest magazine section. I couldn't find the pics online though. here is the article: http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/archive....id=2006_4129318
  20. I remember them wearing out Dead or Alive's You Spin Me Round (like a record, baby) and the Power Station's version of Get it on (Bang a Gong) Didn't they also broadcast all of Live Aid, too? I know I watched a bunch of it on some fuzzy channel. Channel 39 is the only other station I remember having a poor signal.
  21. but they do have at least one company partnership. The Gulfgate Starbucks is an Urban Coffee Opportunity store - a partnership with Magic Johnson. http://www.johnsondevelopmentcorp.com/starbucks/index.html
  22. I disagree. They play most (if not all) of their home games at Barnett. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=68....04283&t=h&om=1 Note their 2006 Football Schedule http://www.milbyalum.org/2006%20Varsity%20...%20Schedule.htm and see my previous post below:
  23. a lot of the east end and southside high schools play at Barnett Stadium. Its just off the south loop between Telephone and Long Dr. it's on the former site of the Golfcrest Country Club (1926-1970) - before they packed up and moved to Pearland.
  24. I imagine the pictures will be for internal appraiser viewing only. There is a new law this year in Texas that removed all property images and sketches from the internet posted property records. The reasoning was that it made it too easy for crooks to "case" your house online. A lot of counties used to have the house exterior dimensions posted online in a little diagram and a few counties had posted photographs of properties, along with the diagram. They have all been removed though.
  25. "That's Hedley, not Hedy!"
