  1. Here is the list of structures that now have landmark status: http://www.houstontx.gov/planning/historic...s/landmarks.htm A lot more than I expected to see! Too bad the former owner of Ashland's didn't apply for it.
  2. Kaldi used to be one of my favorite cafes. I have missed it DEARLY for a few years now (I think it closed in 2002). Since then, Stephanie, the owner, got married and started a family. Last year (or the year before) she said (via the Kaldi website) that she was going to reopen in a new spot somewhere near Studewood and 20th. But now her website is down and I haven't heard anything new on the restaurant. Does anyone know what her plans for Kaldi are now??? I want my Brave Combo!
  3. so this makes sense in a "Landry's" kind of way. Let's tear down an actual victorian restaurant so we can build a new faux victorian themed restaurant. i will also NEVER eat at the new place.
  4. ditto that. very sad. we really should be able to protect national register sites better On a related note: Does anyone know if any owners have submitted their properties for landmark status since the ordinance was passed last summer?
  5. Sevfiv, you mentioned in the Wm Penn thread that you emailed Ramona Davis about its demolition. Do you think they know about the impending doom for the Ben Milam. Maybe they could get more advance publicity out on the demo before the deed is done and somehow someone might save it..or at least delay it. Not that its worked on many other structures in Houston..but its better to try and fail than waking up one morning and finding a wrecking ball in the side of a landmark without any warning.
  6. here you go...i hijacked this from a real estate company. ought to answer some of your questions http://www.heritagetexas.com/relocation/Ho...Communities.htm personally, i think you are biting off more than you can chew...you need to narrow it down...c'mon, houston is the 4th largest city - i don't think you are going to "assimilate" it in a few days. to answer your three questions: 1. Not sure which one you mean. The partially completed outer beltway is the Grand Parkway (TX99). The farthest one out that is completed is Beltway 8 (the sam houston parkway/tollway) 2. Gulf freeway is 45 south. North freeway is 45n. southwest is 59s. eastex is 59n. katy is 10w. east is 10e. south is 288. northwest frwy is 290. crosby frwy is 90. pasadena frwy is 225. probably something i missed. Check out this link to a website and online book devoted to our freeway system: http://www.houstonfreeways.com/ 3. not much really to see between here and galveston except suburbia. Maybe stop by the Kemah waterfront on 146 - just east of NASA.
  7. depends on exactly what you do but i would say a new service panel and a couple new circuits would be at least $1100. Rewiring is not hard if you have all your walls empty down to the studs. However, If you want to rewire the entire house with fully enclosed walls it could be very hard...for someone that doenst do it everyday anyway. you can get a surge protector that is incorporated into the service panel but i don't think they are too cheap.
  8. I say Eastside..it's probably the longest continuously hispanic area: Harrisburg would be the best street to cruise. Its the main drag for hispanic businesses. The epicenter is like Harrisburg and 75th or Wayside Another good spot would be in the Near Northside along N.Main at Quitman and Hogan. and you could go across up Airline - like Tjones said. The Farmers Market is out there but I don't know how late its open or if its open on Sunday. also there are some big Hispanic Flea Markets out Airline near 45 that do very good business. And the streets Sevfiv and Timmy chan mentioned are good streets too.
  9. EXCELLENT WORK! Thank you! I swear there used to be more of it when I saw it. So do you know why it was posted there? Was that the location of an old bus depot?
  10. A river oaks address sounds more logical. however....according to hcad this house was built in 1955 too. So maybe he built this house after he made his money from developing oak forest. And maybe he lived in Oak Forest at first until he cashed his checks and his mansion was ready.
  11. Green Parrot: They were a popular restaurant out of Kansas City with a location there, St. Louis, and Houston. Very famous for their fried chicken.
  12. i think you have go in person to the county offices to get tax records that old. You could find out who lived in your house in the 50's by using the City Directories in the Ideson library downtown.
  13. 1. Wakefield at Golf 2. I think it's in the Franklin lofts building
  14. On the backside of the hotel, there used to be an old sign painted on the side of the building, probably from the 50's, that showed bus destinations to certain cities and the cost and mileage. Did anyone ever get a picture of that? i always wanted to but i forgot everytime i went to an astros game.
  15. The windows are double hung. The upper pane has probably slid down in the frame over time. The ideal fix is to get the windows moving again. Clean out the old paint and crud out of the tracks. Get the lower pane moving up and the upper pane moving down. Once you do that you should be able to get the upper sash pushed all the way up and get the lock to line up properly. If you dont want to go to all that effort, you can put a shim under the latch to adjust the position to where it meets the mating half.....or you can drill holes on the sides through both the upper and lower windows where the sashes meet and use pins to lock the window. Or you can even paint them shut! It's too hot in Houston to open the windows! If you mean sheetrock cracks (and your block and beam foundation is fine), then there is not much you can do about it living in houston with the soil we have. Just make sure all your water drains away from the house and not under the house. You should get the steam from a shower out of the bathroom somehow or the excessive moisture will eventually cause problems with mold, mildew, and etc. You can open the bathroom window when you are showering - if you don't want to install an exhaust vent. that is if you decided not to paint them shut

    Houston's Rails-Gone?

The Mykawa tracks are Burlington-Santa Fe owned and i believe that is their only unshared trackage into Houston. Everything else is pretty much UP. So I don't think they would give that up.
  17. beachtown might be the new community you are talking about. http://www.beachtowngalveston.com/home.html Andres Duany worked on the layout. He is the one who designed Seaside (depicted in the Truman Show) and is one of the people responsible for the New Urbanism movement.
  18. Just give Bolivar (and maybe Galveston) residents a free pass or a discount. Everyone else must pay full price.
  19. You need to post some pictures of everything you are doing! I like to live vicariously through others hard work. Seriously though, It would be great to see it now and then when you are finished...it also might help people give you some ideas.
  20. i can't remember where i did it either but i think maybe if you create a new account it will give you that option?
  21. The problem with this is that Baytown is not a member of Metro. Hence, it cannot get Metro bus service or a Park and Ride.
  22. I saw one of those Houston, Remember When episodes a long time ago on Channel 8 and they mentioned it. It was called the Mountain Speedway. Seems like there was a weird story about someone living in a house under the coaster.
  23. So how long does it take? i have had it running for 15 minutes and i seem to be in an endless train loop with no pedestrians.
