  1. That sucks. I liked how the building front was right up to the street. You know whatever goes in there next will have parking in front. Probably be a cruddy CVS or Walgreens. That building definately gave the old "downtown" oak forest some of its character and appeal. It will be missed.

  3. FYI- If you are using IE - you can turn off Automatic Image Resizing under Tools/Internet Options/Advanced Tab/Multimedia. Then uncheck that option (it could be different for other versions of IE - I am using 6)
  4. Ahh...misunderstood that. Well I guess no neighbor is better than having bad neighbors. Wasn't Baytown Nursing Home on Park? Did he have his second office actually INSIDE the home? I guess that was pretty convenient for his patients. Wow, I guess I did not realize that Brownwood stayed "open" that long.
  5. TJones, Where was your grandfather's doctors office? Is your old Lakewood house still occupied even though the murders? or has it become stygmatized? Crazy as it sounds, I don't think they blocked off the streets back in there for several years after Alicia. I can remember "cruising" through there checking it out at night. All the vacant house remains and driveways where there should have been houses...very spooky. Probably why we thought it was neat to drive in there. Man, I wish I could go back in time and give myself a camera.
  6. And not because of the freeway R.O.W. acquisition. They only lost their front parking lot to Txdot. They were going to build a parking garage on another section of the property to replace those lost spaces. Courtesy Chevrolet bought it after the owners of the hotel went bankrupt during renovation. Sort of sad since they just did tons of work upgrading the rooms - maybe 80% complete - and then the building is demolished. I guess someone got some good deals on a lot of that stuff in salvage. Courtesy needed the land to expand their dealership, and evidently they couldn't use an 11 story building. It might have made an impressive showroom (or parts department)!
  7. Cool pics. Looks like a couple of great houses. I heard that Brownwood was developed initially as a place for Humble managers and execs, was that the case with your grandparents? Did one of them work for the Refinery? One little issue though about your above comment. I think the monument was built in 1936. (for the centennial) I was trying to remember what the Lakewood grocery store was called when we were in Baytown. I think it was Lewis & Coker. It may have been a Big Chief before that? Does that ring any bells? Not sure what it was in the 80's or what it is now.
  8. george's italian (if that is the george's you mean) is still open. they moved a few years back...farther out park place, near telephone.
  9. I remember going home from astroworld or the astrodome late at night in the 70's and seeing nudity on the drive inn at the south loop right there at holmes road and cullen (where cherry demolition stores their debris now). The instance that stands out in my mind is a lady standing up covered with balloons while a guy was popping them one at a time exposing select body parts. Probably pretty tame by today's standards but us kids were thrilled. You could also get some "shots" from the Red Bluff drive inn on 225.
  10. the logo is so patriotic and official looking...you'd never know that it was for a skating rinks association. they must have thought they were doing their civic duty - keeping teens off the streets Is the eagle wearing skates?
  11. Also, Ashikaga, the libraries over there in Beaumont should have newspapers on microfiche...like they do here. You might luck out and find that they have the Chronicle or Post over there. Or you could take a road trip to the Big H.
  12. Ebay...and they even ship it to your front door
  13. Oops. Sorry I guess I wasn't clear on the Lutheran High School info. It was in the area formed by Rustic, Garland, Woodridge, and I-45. Taking a second look at it, I guess the High School has been completely removed. However, the buildings along Rustic and Garland - in the northeast corner of the property are still there - which I guess are actually the buildings that were part of the Mount Olive Lutheran Church Elementary School. This is an image from the 1982 USGS map: Aerial view from 2002
  14. You could tell them to jump in the lake but then you would lose a large number of your possible buyers. That said, i think you can do fine selling with byowner, and you can do horrible. Same as when using a Realtor. Like you said, there are plenty of bad ones out there. There are also plenty of good ones. I think I would prefer to have a Good Realtor, one with experience, in my corner, than going it alone. Just like when i hire any professional - from a Lawyer to a Plumber - I am paying for a professional and i expect professional service and a quality job. no different for a Realtor.
  15. That is because Magnolia was a predecessor to Mobil. I read in the Chron that only the "good" Valero stations will get the Valero makeover. They will brand older stations or the one's that don't meet their new standards as Shamrocks.

  18. Peppermint Park at Gulfgate was at the corner of Reveille and Arnim (i think it is currently the Dodge Body Shop) Lutheran High School (South) was across the freeway from Gulfgate - corner of Woodridge and Rustic (Currently HCC Southeast Campus). It was there until 1982, then it moved to the South Loop feeder just down from the YMCA. It moved to Dixie Farm Road and 45 around 1998
  19. we have been thinking about installing one of those water heaters. What brand do you have, where did you purchase it, and what was the price? And what about installation? Did you need a new electric run to it? did you use your old hWH vent?
  20. I could be wrong but, I think carbor was talking about the new construction houses (from the original thread topic), not the little HCC bungalow.
  21. Karma? Is your name Earl? I don't think Broadway is doing that bad...just a different tier of commerce. A problem in my mind is the large swath of land that TXDOT cut through for 225. It just seems to split Harrisburg (the former town) into two parts. If that wasnt there I think you would get a more cohesive feeling - like the way harrisburg (the street) feels. BTW, the City of Houston's Broadway was Hutchins (called West Broadway) and Dowling (called East Broadway). according to a pre-1920's map I have. I guess they renamed them when Harrisburg was Annexed in'26.
