  1. The only hope for this line is near term Fed. $$$. This could happen though if a stimulus is passed that creates the infrastructure bank, but is not likely given the current political "Gerry-zoo." As it is now, I'm personally glad that the light rail system has been bifurcated between the affluent and non-affluent residential parts of town. I think in a few years folks will be amazed/mad at the ridership numbers in the sense that expansion of the system will become an inevitable fact. It will be interesting to see how the housing supply reacts to the increased demand in the rail corridors. Also consider that everyday that goes by is another day that a Culbertson voter dies off and another voter for light rail comes of age. By the time the UL is politically ready it will probably just go straight down Richmond to save money and time. By then traffic will be horrendous and the train will be seen as too little, too late. I'll never forget a rail meeting at Rice back in 2006 where many students came to protest his opposition to the line. There were a couple of women there who had gone bankrupt paying medical bills and Culbertson ignored their pleas for some kind of help and used his typical backhanded dribble about supposed "free markets" to simply change the topic off of light rail. In retrospect, I feel kind of ashamed to have been there because of the rail line as the very real threat of inflating health care costs sat before me in the frame of an bankrupted cancer-survivor.
  2. I took some out of town friends here last weekend. The drink menu is all u-call-its. It's still has a saloon feel to it and the space is nicely lit for a bar, esp considering the barrel vaulted ceiling is close to 20' high at apex.
  3. Most of those restaurant recommendations are from the latest Bon Appetite magazine.
  4. The crew that did the staining and polishing of the store's concrete floor did a heck of job. Nicest Wal-mart I've ever been to.
  5. Good luck with the tunnel extension, Chevron keeps their tangent of the tunnel system access controlled.
  6. Like a Bloomingdale's? or is the old Sakowitz parking garage getting a retail renovation first?
  7. As a kid on a school field trip, I once got a tour of the salt dome where the barrels of Tabasco were stored. My eyes are burning just thinking of the experience.
  8. I'm curious why this project is being considered as JUST a high school or just an office tower. Someone posted a pic of 8 Spruce St. in NYC by F. Gehry; it's not just condo's and offices but has an elementary school at it's base. Considering the amount of public transportation at the Capital St. site it wouldn't be too hard to get a parking variance.
  9. Is the gov't going to sell the property soon? You might have a point if it was... @benenglsh LEED cert. = going green (i.e. improving structural and mechanical performance thereby lowering fixed costs)
  10. The article is obviously Ted Poe propaganda. Get a clue wackjob.
  11. So if a bldg owner gets a platinum LEED cert., it's a waste of money? That's news to me.
  12. @DrLan34 I've got a pic I meant to put up last night, will try get to it tonight. It's looks like the McGowen frontage will be pedestrian with parking laid out on the south end of the lot, similar to the shopping center further west on the northside of McGowen (with the Ponzo's). I'm not exactly sure where the service/utilities are going in. @intencity77 There's a Starbucks in the Randal's too.
  13. Quick update: The slabs and tilt walls are up and they're working on the exterior build outs now.
  14. This one is a long shot now that Devon is packing for OKC. I'm a tad curious where they're gonna fit parking for something this tall? The existing Allen Center garage is pretty full as is but the Heritage Plaza garage (across from the Double Tree) is still pretty empty. It could suffer from the same sort of vacancy problems Heritage has b/c of it's lack of close-by tunnel access. For this to be a success it would probably require two sky-bridges and a renovation of the common areas of the Allen Center Complex.
  15. New owners are currently in a renovation of the entry steps along Smith St.
  16. Here's the steel frame from about a month ago At the moment they are filling in the exterior stick fame stud walls and parapets.
  17. So why are streets like Washington Ave. or West Dallas St. designated as bike thoroughfares? I understand how some parts of town there are bottlenecks, where a rider has to cross or interact with auto traffic but some of these "bike friendly" roads are just suicidal. Also what many drivers perceive as blowing through stop signs are really just "Idaho stops" kinda like an auto driver doing a "Cali stop" it's just a way to preserve some forward inertia.
  18. Bike gripes? Lemme tell you about PEOPLE WHO WALK TOO SLOW I think the way some drivers treat bike riders has been transferred/rationalized to the way some riders treat walkers. It's a race to the bottom and in the end, it's always the damned dog that gets kicked.
