  1. Maybe we're getting some corten steel sculptures by Richard Serra.

  3. Nice, the cafeteria is still there. Those diagonal cross frames look pretty interesting and the vertical inset fins help dissolve the bulk of the floorplate. The existing bldg is pretty bulky for it's height or maybe that's an optical illusion of the solar shades. As far as missing the way the bldg looks now, I think I'll miss the newspaper stands along the sidewalk the most. I didn't grow up in the 60's but it's easy to see the appeal of its nostalgia. btw the bldg currently has it's holiday lighting up, enjoy it while it lasts.
  4. It's a large, undeveloped greenfield in the middle of Midtown; that also doubles as parking for the resturants/bars across the street. No rush.
  5. If the major insurance companies buy in, driver-less cars will be here to stay. As with architecture, what insurance is willing to cover is what gets built.
  6. Looks strange to see Dryden at Main so treeless and shadow-less compared to now. This bldg was like a case study for G. Bunshaft in designing the Lever House podium in NYC and eventually One City Centre in terms of prelim solar design.
  7. The most glaring problem is what to do about the inevitable interactions between human drivers and automated drivers. The legal system is light years away from establishing liability protocol and might be for quite awhile b/c it gets pretty messy when you think about for whom should be held at fault when accidents occur. The driver? The software? The hardware? The passenger? The road? etc. I don't see driver-less cars as the panacea some folks are making it out to be. If we do get them sooner than later, then don't be surprised if they end up outlawing human drivers (at least on Federal freeways) in the process. In the short term, I'd like to see the material science of roads improve first to where they could absorb micro-particulate pollution, keep your tires from wearing out as much, and/or dampen the noise produced by your tire's friction. At least in road sections where this would make sense. I think the embedded sensors of 2nd Gen infrastructure should occur sooner than later as well.
  8. Anything's better than that black wrought-iron fence and private greenfield. Also more apts in Midtown means more pressure to lower rents in light of the recent spike, esp considering this is next to a gold buyer and a street "pain clinic."
  9. It's conventionally Houston in it's site design (which is to say it appeals to those driving down Travis). I'm sure the more urban-scaled Main St. side will satisfy most once construction is done and the retailers have moved in. My only disappointment is the parapet height is ~340', only 20' taller than 1300 Main (which means I probably won't see anything except for the roof line/mechanical roost).
  10. The Lanier bldg, like our art deco (err.. thumbnail) City Hall provides much needed visual scale to the skyscrapers around them. It is owned by the city so if some developer made an offer the city couldn't refuse I'm sure it would be a goner. But it couldn't hurt to power wash that high modern thing at least once a decade.
  11. It could be a view from the HPD with Dallas St. crossing in front, looking northeast.
  12. Those three skylobby-elements your referring to are presently the mechanical floors.
  13. ^paging SevFiv to the ExxonMobil tower thread.. Btw I hope the Bell St. Cafe stays after Exxon leaves.
  14. That McDonalds exterior is being renovated to the new boxy, rough faced CMU look. It's not going anywhere soon. The bus station is optimally located next to the rail line and the downtown transit station. Anywhere's else would be a burden on the people who use these services. The area is perfectly fine in it's current trajectory.
  15. Quite a bold statement, do you work for the spec manufacturers? How do you know it's future patina or ceramic integrity?
  16. Dallas First Baptist The Eyeball (under construction) Warren Park Wilson bldg
