  1. I'm one of those "downtowner, young professional" types referred to by constlaw.
  2. Perhaps they're gainfully employed, and don't bother checking in with you to let them know that they're headed off to work their night shift.
  3. Gee, let me think about if I'm more sympathetic about people getting something to eat or expensive homes. First World Problems
  4. So no, you don't have any hard evidence that they don't have jobs, just that you see people during the day. You don't know if they work nights, if they're retired, or whatever? For the record, welfare is pretty hard for men without children to get, so I'm not sure what you think they're living on.
  5. Well, I'm a downtown yuppie type who is currently unemployed. I just think it's being a little simplistic.
  6. So the people living there don't have jobs, for the most part? Source on that claim?
  7. We don't need to give civilian law enforcement any more reason to believe that they're a paramilitary. I am absolutely opposed to BDUs. I wonder where I can submit public comment on this...
  8. Interesting, do you have a link about the proposed change?
  9. Is this construction project insured? How long will you maintain it? Why would the church sell the land to you for so little? An empty lot of that size is worth way more than your supposed entire cost.
  10. The money for the church is to convert that space into a public park. The idea was to leave some of the walls intact. There was a thread about it a while back.
  11. It's being picked apart, bit by bit. The first thing was the federal government taking part of it near Allen Parkway to build housing for veterans returning from war. If I'm recalling correctly, the federal government compensated the city for it, and the city agreed to build housing elsewhere for the displaced people, but they either stole the money or blew it on other stuff, I can't recall which. More recently the three story townhomes are infiltrating and replacing it.
  12. The fourplex with "Worden" on the front of the building sat here formerly. Torn down last year.
  13. Yes, Freedman's Town. By West Gray.
  14. Many apartment buildings only give you one or two parking spaces in the garage, right? Is that the case at Post Midtown? Anyway, I don't think 11:25 is that late. I've parked over there to go to Front Porch Pub at that hour before.
  15. Probably Post Midtown?
  16. That particular area in Midtown still seems to be in transition.
  17. I didn't browbeat you or storm out of the thread and I was replying to MetroMogul, so I don't know why I win.
  18. If you want to improve both rail and bus service then I don't even know what we are arguing about, or why you say "pro rail" like it's an epithet.
  19. I used to ride 1 and it never had a 6 minute time table frequency going back several years before rail. Which specific route are you referring to? I don't suppose you have a copy of the time table. Rail is every six minutes throughout the day, not just rush hour. (4:30 AM - 7:30 PM)
  20. Why argue for better bus service if it can never provide the same reliability and frequency? Are there bus routes in other cities on 6 minute intervals? As someone who uses both bus and rail often, I've come to rely on the rail far more, and I'm not seeing how advocating for better bus service will ever surpass the reliability of rail (aside from those rare incidents where the rail is disabled). Rail on a bad day has been better for me than buses on any day.
  21. Was it even possible to spend the federal money on those things? Wasn't the money allocated specifically for the rail project? Is the federal government likely to give the same millions for LRT BRT vanpooling?
  22. Speaking as a person who is the demand commuting from downtown to the Med Center for work, I will have to respectfully disagree. The buses were unreliable and didn't hit their timetables hardly ever. It's not good to have to go to the stop 45 minutes earlier just to make absolutely sure that I get to work on time. The rail was fairly consistent about keeping to the every six minutes schedule, and even if it ran a few minutes late, 10 minutes isn't too bad. No, I'm telling you that it isn't about speed primarily. It is about trip time (leaving my door til walking into work), about frequency, and about reliability. I need to get to work on time, and I wish to spend as little time possible standing around waiting. The park and ride commuter buses seem to keep their time tables well, but the buses that duplicated rail work (1 Hospital, 25 Richmond, etc) did not. 1 Hospital still goes from downtown to the Med Center, but do you think I ever take it? Hell no. It's not likely to pass by when it says it will, and I think the buses are maybe 25 minutes apart while trains run every six minutes during the day. Any rail line built in virtually any city is going to duplicate bus routes and lead to bus routes being re-routed, and therefore the forced transfers. But the rail line built in this city manages to have one of the highest boardings per mile of any light rail line. Those other cities are dealing with the same duplication of service issues.
  23. Just because it is the expected behavior of cops doesn't mean a person shouldn't do it.
  24. We have one of the most heavily traveled light rail lines in the country. It seems to be in demand.
