  1. Who belongs to this downtown hivemind, anyway?
  2. I read a history of Market Square somewhere that had mentioned how the tamale vendors were chased out of it at one point by city officials and/or police.
  3. Yeah, but it sucks. The one at Tafia is much better. I haven't been to the one at La Strada.
  4. I'm always amazed at how many restaurants can operate on this schedule. If a server works every day he's putting in 17.5 hours a week, and if you don't own the land/building it seems like the lease would break you. Treebeards has, what, 4 downtown locations or something, all open for lunch only. Boggles the mind.
  5. The fraternity apparently ran a haunted house at 1766 Pasadena at one point. Nice house for a haunted house! The frat bought the house in 1992 and sold the house in 2003. Edit: 10 bedrooms, 5 baths, 7323 sq ft. Current owners may be Jose and Claudia Ceno.
  6. And just think, if it were Discovery Tower, GRB might re-name to Discovery Center...and Hilton Americas might rename itself Hilton Discovery.
  7. Guadalajara looks almost complete now. The interior work looks done and the tables and chairs have been put in place, which tells me that they're just days from opening. I see no indication of the others.
  8. I agree, I would not call it bum-infested. Spend a little time at the Greyhound station or Allen's Landing (sometimes) for some perspective. I seem to remember something like that, but maybe it might do better now that downtown is a little more lively?
  9. I'd like to see it return to its former Market Square splendor, with a weekly farmer's market.
  10. Agreed. Jones is often used and Market Square is rarely used. Market Square is a better place to start.
  11. You realize that the light flying off the rings was a developer sketch, right? Like uh, promotional materials and stuff. You know, they kind of exaggerate things in the sketches to make things look more interesting.
  12. As are most parks, but I wasn't talking about weekday business hours, necessarily. DG has quite a few people after 5 PM, and the weekends are downright busy. Besides, I stated that DG is taking a majority of the park interest in downtown, regardless of what little park interest that might be. Which park downtown is busier than DG? Tranquility? Sam Houston? Root Memorial Square? No, these parks are all deserted most times, certainly moreso than DG. So yeah, DG is taking a majority of the existing park interest in downtown.
  13. That's correct. My aunt used to rave about it. Didn't it also have a purple theme? Eh, maybe not. Can't remember the name of it.
  14. There's a few things on that menu that look worth trying, but the prices seem pretty exorbitant. Hell, even French toast with bacon is 11 dollars.
  15. Probably a typo on HCAD. Not sure about your Google Maps issue, because it puts it at Bute St (E of 59) for me.
  16. Richmont Corporation's President is Elsian Cozens who was apparently a long-time assistant of Dominique de Menil, so very possible that its all the same family of companies.
  17. Thanks for the tip. I haven't been over there in years, but it used to be great to walk across the street for some cornbread pancakes or a Mexican Coca Cola.
  18. Yeah, that's the Dan Flavin light installation. http://www.menil.org/visit/flavin.php
  19. Me too, but also it might be nice for them to make it more obvious to the Richmond line riders that they are there. I'm sure Lucky Burger and Cafe Artiste would like it. And replacing the vacant white building with something useful could be nothing but good. Gosh I hate that place. Rotho Chapel too.
  20. You're probably right. At W. Main and Loretto there's an abstract sculpture in an empty field. At one point I saw a similar abstract sculpture being stored inside that gate at the white building. Menil was a great landlord. The museum security guard would cruise my street and the other streets where they owned properties, and they were always a phone call away if there was someone suspicious and you wanted them to make a pass. For anyone who hasn't been to see the Menil main museum (which has some surprisingly famous painters' work in it) and the Byzantine Fresco Chapel (which has a fascinating origin story) you don't know what you're missing, they're a real treat (and free).
  21. Little-known fact to some, Menil owns many of the houses surrounding Menil. For example, I used to live at a house on the corner of W. Main and Mandell (across from Cafe Artiste) and my landlord was Menil. They have a property management office across Mandell from the museum. I always thought owning all those houses was part of a long-term expansion plan. No need for any mess when they want to expand. Just let all the leases expire and then bulldoze the houses. Incidentally, they already have a minor presence on Richmond Drive that they can use, Richmond Hall, a 1930s grocery store that now houses a light installation by Dan Flavin. Furthermore, there is already a Menil-owned path that leads between some houses from Branard to W. Main @ Loretto. I see nothing but potential for Menil.
  22. Yeah, for one-offs maybe that they get a PR return from. I think the shareholders would cry foul if they entered into an ongoing expense for little PR return that they might get from people seeing a sign about a fairly small park brought to you by Chevron. Besides, I really don't see many using it other than Chevron employees or maybe people working at Wedge, with Discovery Green sucking much of the park interest in downtown.
