  1. I have a good view of this from my office. The pond was drained over the weekend. I'll keep an eye on it and post if I see any more activity.
  2. Poor is a relative term. Without the subsidy from the city the rent would have to be higher. If the city subsidizes the development of this project then they are helping to pay the rent for people who are too "poor" to afford a 1000sf apartment downtown. If people that can pay $2200 a month for an apartment downtown aren't poor then this is could be considered welfare for the "rich". It's too bad we can't all get help from the city with our rent or mortgage payments.
  3. If it was $4 bucks then I'd say I haven't gotten my money's worth. I don't care how much it is. Government funding of a shopping mall is so rife with opportunity for graft that I'd pay to have them not build it. I'd rather live in a world where people honestly make their money than in one with one more shopping mall.
  4. I don't think anyone questions if The Pavillions is better than a parking lot. Is was the development worth all the money we put into it? What benefit have we gotten out of it? Could the money have been put to better use elsewhere? Should handing out money to big business in order to promote economic development in a specific area of town that can't make it on it's own merits be one of the roles of government? There are a lot of people who think it should be.
  5. I used to eat there weekly when it was near Town and Country shopping center on Memorial. I tried the new location once. The menu had changed, it was hot and the parking situation was terrible. I haven't been back.
  6. There are two tower cranes in the area between the Cemex building and Specs near Bunker Hill Road. Does anyone know what's going up there?
  7. That depends on what your time is worth. Obviously mine is not worth much or I wouldn't have posted this.
  8. It's at the intersection of Beltway 8 and I-10, where Town and Country mall used to be. Edit: And midway did develop a Hotel at this site. Hotel Sorella. It's not the hotel in the rendering above but I can see a few elements that are very similar. The development has been very successful. They are breaking ground on a new parking garage and two more small office towers right now.
  9. Is there information on Chevron's plans for this lot that is publicly available?
  10. The line-up seems perfect to me. The people that I know that are in that area's demographic spend their money in stores like these. A custom clothing shop for men just outside River Oaks? -- Perfect. My friends that make 3 times the money I do live in the area and they buy all custom tailored clothing. A Zegna shop would be good too. Bang & Olufsen just outside River Oaks? -- Where else are their customers going to come from?
  11. Correct. I live close to CityCentre and walk to the gorcery store a lot. I walk to the bus stop to get to work downtown. I really could live without a car in this area. There have been times when I go 5 days without driving. I use the car mostly on weekends.
  12. Yes, the brownstones were built. I drive by sometimes and I can't see any evidence that they've sold. I think they are asking in th 700-800k range. The general location on the West side of Houston is not bad. The specific location facing an ugly post office is bad. I ate at Flora and Muse today and noticed that they are charging for parking in the spots on the street in Citycentre now. It was $2 for us to park for an hour.
  13. There's nothing aesthetically wrong with them and I don't see where TheNiche ever said there was. They are technically dumb. It's a very bad spot for wind turbines to be placed and the money to put them there could have been used to build a more efficient power source somewhere else. The gullible and naive may think that they are something more than a publicity stunt and decoration. The last thing we need is for people to become more ignorant about energy production.
  14. The turbines promote stupidity. There are no doubt some people who think that they actually make a difference.
  15. I use one of those banks all the time. It added something to the area for me. I was also glad to see the crummy apartments go.
  16. Town and Country has been updated quite a bit recently. They just added about 100k square feet. Town & Country and Citycentre are totally separate shopping centers owned by different companies. The fact that Citycentre is doing so well seems to be helping T&C. I was there on the Fourth of July and there was foot traffic all through T&C, it's probably here to stay as is for a long time.
  17. Great post Red. I know when I drive through gentrifying neighborhoods inside the loop looking for houses to buy I tend to not even see the low income homes that are intermingled with all the new townhouses. We don't want to think about people that are not as well off as we are so they become kind of invisible. If I don't always see them then there are probably a lot of other people out there just like me. When I ride the bus down I-10 in the morning I see them. This area of town is full of low-income families. It always strikes me as interesting that those giant presidential heads that are a little over a mile from the proposed Wal-Mart site are surounded by discarded mattresses and homeless camps. River Oaks this area is not. If people don't want to see or live around poor people then The Heights is not your neighborhood. You should move to Bunker Hill, Piney Point or River Oaks.
  18. I agree. And if riding light rail to dinner is a dream for someone then they need to get a life.
  19. I noticed some cladding is going up on the South side this week.
  20. I guess I could be wrong. It appears to have drive through lanes on the north side and I can see what looks like the pneumatic tube system being placed in the ground near them. I'll try to take a photo this week. I get a really good view of it from the bus since it's higher than a regular car.
  21. What a terrible attitude. Do you think everyone who disagrees with you is incapable of learning?
  22. It is. I've heard it from people who are working on the hotel across the street. Also, I can see the site very well from the Metro bus I ride by it everday. It's far enough along that you can see the drive through lanes.
