  1. Yeah, I think they only use one elevator and they only let 8 people inside at a time. rsb, you're correct. Scott went to HSPVA, and he also went to Johnston Middle School (GO GREYHOUNDS!). I'm a Johnston alum, 8th grade class of 2001.
  2. I went up there the other night. Now, it's known as Scott Gertner's Sky Bar. I thought about this thread while I was there. Excellent views of downtown of course.
  3. LOL. On a slightly related note, when people refer to our highways by cardinal direction, a lot of times they'll call a freeway an interstate, whether it's actually an interstate or not. I've heard radio ads saying "Near I-59." What is this, Birmingham Alabama? Don't even get me started on the "US 288" signs I've seen installed by TxDOT and the TMC.
  4. In 10-15 years, that may be pretty dang close to Huntsville when it comes to I-45. They're planning to expand its width all the way to the Walker Co. line.
  5. I just thought about this. Houston's freeway system has us referring to freeways not by highway designations, but by their directional names, like Gulf, North, South, Southwest, etc. These names aren't just limited to street signs. When 59 N turns from Eastex to US 59 in Kingwood, folks still call the "US 59" portion "Eastex". In most cases, it's kinda simple, like most people who refer to 288 as the South Freeway start calling it simply "288" past the Beltway or "The Nolan Ryan Expressway" past 2234 if they want to get super literal. Now, at what point do you stop calling I-45 North the North Freeway and start calling it I-45? I think the furthest I've ever heard anyone refer to I-45 N as the North Freeway is just south of Conroe. Past Katy, the Katy Freeway is simply I-10, past Baytown, it's no longer the East Freeway but I-10. Now, as for the Southwest, Northwest, and Eastex Freeways, what's the general area where folks stop referring to them by the name and simply refer to their federal designation number? In the past, I'd hear folks say things like "take 59 past the Brazos", but now, I'm hearing folks say "The Southwest Freeway past the Brazos River." Maybe it has to do with the outward progression of the metro area?
  6. I can see the commercials now. "Just add a spritz to that pot of greens and you've got instant down home cooking, tastes just like grandma's Sunday dinners!" (then cut to a cheesy looking family at a table eating, grinning like Cheshire cats, nodding overenthusiastically in agreement with the narrator)
  7. Sounds like we got lucky. We're on S. MacGregor and all we really got were a bunch of tree limbs in the front yard.
  8. I don't think the new build homes are as bad as the condos. The new build homes are typically single family households, and the condos house more folks than a single family household in the same space. This means that the condos contribute more traffic on neighborhood streets, and are just more strain on the infrastructure as it relates to things such as flooding.
  9. John Chase's house is one of the nicest mods in the neighborhood. It's also kind of unique because it's a mod on the north side of the bayou. Most of the mods I'm familiar with in the neighborhood are on the south side.
  10. Here's my two submissions. They're from the Riverside area. N. Roseneath N. Parkwood
  11. The 300 doesn't look bad, from that angle at least. I'm eager to see what the tail end looks like.
  12. I saw a photo from 1961 that shows the rose garden intact, so the arrival of the fountains can now be narrowed down to the 1961-1964 timeframe.
  13. It's on AMC right now. It should be coming on AMC again in the wee hours of Tuesday morning (4/21) at 12:45am. Fire up the Tivo for that one.
  14. Niche is right, I'm referring to the one on 288. It takes me about the same length of time to get to the 288 location or Meyer Park from Riverside depending on traffic.
  15. Sadly, you're right. My choices are either the one on Richmond near Kirby or the one on Westheimer near Fountainview. This may have much to do with it. http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/archive....id=2004_3806748
  16. Tonight, I just got reminded why I usually take the trek to the Wal-Mart in Pearland when I need something from them. I went to Meyer Park tonight, and words cannot express my utter disbelief. I'd just left the Super Target on S.Main and wanted to check on something there. Target is just a whole different type of world compared to Wal-Mart, especially that one in particular. I grew up in the "hood", but that Meyer Park Wal-Mart is too "hood" for me.
  17. I can't believe I missed that. When did that happen? I remember a similar high speed chase that ended on I-10 in Sealy, where the guy's truck careened off of the embankment of the overpass near the old outlet center and threw him out. I think ABC 13 blurred him being thrown out of the truck even though he survived.
  18. I know in the case of the guy who jumped from the Transco Tower on the morning of 12/16/02 (my 16th b-day), the media was reporting on what they thought was an instance of a building climber who would be arrested upon his arrival at the top. Instead, almost all of the major news outlets in town provided Houstonians with a live, on air suicide. I'm pretty sure that wasn't what they were expecting to broadcast that morning. Though from a cynical standpoint, they may have very well known that the possibility of the guy plunging to his death, planned or unplanned was great, and would be very sensational.
  19. The last one I went to was in 2001. It was great, Southwest had Lone Star One on display and there were a lot of static displays including an old Lockheed Constellation in TWA colors.
  20. Not sure why they did it, but it happened between 1957 and 1964 according to historicaerials.com.
  21. It was quite the house. The owner took excellent care of it with period correct furnishings inside and out. I'd been inside of it numerous times, it was a beaut. I got pissed when UT gutted it and let the empty shell sit there for years unkempt. Now, the former owner owns a house of older of similar vintage in Woodville that he's treating the same way. I've also noticed that the townhomes being built on the site must be undergoing some sort of financial crunch. 52 units were to be built and finished by now. Only 4 have been built at a rate that makes molasses seem to flow like a raging river. They're also putting up this ugly wall made of cinder blocks across the front.
  22. How could I forget HoustonSpotters? I'm a longtime member, and now embarrassed.
  23. IAH has one on Lee Rd. just south of Will Clayton. Arrivals on 9/27 soar just about 100 feet overhead.
