  1. Hermann Park way too popular? I can't believe it! Even before the expansion, I found some Sundays resulted in no parking to be found on the grounds. I can't imagine the situation now. Dang inner-city ducks. Such a thing never would've happened at Armand Bayou! Yeah, that thing does look like they swiped a raccoon from the woods by Brays Bayou and dipped it in a barrel of red paint, lol.
  2. I remember growing up in the early 90s when the Nabisco plant was still alive, my mom would drive to the Kroger (then called AppleTree) on OST. Instead of taking MacGregor to 288 and taking 288 to OST, sometimes we'd take the long way, which was taking Ardmore down to Holcombe and turning down Holcombe. We'd get to OST from Holcombe via either Almeda, or Grand Blvd to Van Etten. Either one of those detours would take us right past the bakery, and she'd put the window down to let me smell the bread baking. MMMM.... freshly baked bread...
  3. I first saw the thing about 5 or 6 years ago. It's HUGE and ugly. if I've found the correct building on HAR, it's 31,000sq ft. Here's a pic of it. It has a 7 car garage. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source...113207547169807 http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source...415094339622645 It's now for sale, but the question I have is, who built this thing?
  4. How interesting that this information about the Evergreen Negro Cemetery should come up now. I just found out a few days ago that my great great grandfather was buried at Evergreen in 1919. I talked about Evergreen with my great uncle on the phone earlier today (he was the deceased's grandson) and apparently, no gravestone exists for my great great grandfather.
  5. That article makes me wish my Riverside dwelling was a mod. This house was built during the time that the other mods were sprouting up, yet, I guess the owners wanted something a bit more traditional.
  6. That house could use a little care. I'm pretty sure they know what a historic gem the house is, I hope it gets restored to its former glory one day and not replaced by a gaudy MegaMcMansion.
  7. The last time I passed the place, it didn't look so hot. Like most old houses, I think it could use some work, despite the HCAD's site saying that it's in "Excellent" condition.
  8. Sounds like you may be referring to the old Weingarten Home.
  9. The way that they market this event is kinda deceiving. In this morning's Chron, an article says "it is a place to get a vast range of deliciously good eats to tempt your palate." Then at very end of the article, it says "what you get is a chopped beef sandwich plate with chips and beans from the Chuck Wagon." Yep, that's real vast.
  10. Thanks for telling me. What's the use of going to a cook-off if all you're allowed to eat is Aramark crud? I'll save my admission cost and get some BBQ at one of the BBQ joints I frequent.
  11. Besides getting a free brisket sandwich with admission, is the public able to taste any of the BBQ being prepared by the teams?
  12. A Sonic in an underground tunnel? I thought one of their features that draws customers was being a drive-in.
  13. Describing our student body as "mostly undesirable", and your continued perpetuation of the lie that our students and alumni like to say that they go to or went to UH renders much, it not all of your argument for the name change as flawed. I may be wrong, but your post kind of reeks of ill perceived elitism based on your choice of words and phrases. I have plenty of friends and family members who are UH students and grads, and not one of them has or had trouble finding employment because of supposed confusion with UHD. In fact, these same UH students and grads believe that the name change is unnecessary. Perhaps some of us at UHD do want a name change, so that our alumni do not become wrongly associated with a certain UH alumnus who exhibits "mostly undesirable" traits, such as twisting and bending words just to make their point seem right.
  14. You know what this means, right? They're gonna have to move Houston to the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas by the start of the new semester so that the name will be geographically correct. I hope they have enough helicopters and enough fuel to lift this city.
  15. Well, since you're kicking everyone off of your ferries, they'd better not take the Washburn Tunnel as a detour because Bob Eckels told ME that I own that tunnel! I sit in a rocking chair at one end with a shotgun and shoot at whoever tries to come in, doesn't work too well when someone drives in on the other side. I mainly use it as a place to hide from TheNiche because I owe him some toll road fees.
  16. As I was watching this, I could imagine Tom Servo and Crow making wisecracks. http://blogs.chron.com/bayoucityhistory/20...vernment_1.html
  17. Neither did he. The account given by the woman who was in the elevator when it happened said that the doors closed on his body and pinned him.
  18. Castillo is leaving UHD soon. Maybe he wants a "legacy", to be known as the President who "gave UHD it's new, fresh identity".
  19. The survey that came to that particular conclusion was flawed. The person who owns the company that did the survey actually has some ties to UH, and of course would bring those findings in favor of those who want the name change, namely Max Castillo and the UH Board of Regents. There are a minority of students that value the confusion with UH, bunch of posers, they need to be dunked into Buffalo Bayou. I can tell you as a UHD student that I oppose the name change, NOT because I value any perceived confusion with UH, I make it a point to tell people that I go to the University of Houston-Downtown when asked where I attend school. I oppose the name change because it's a long standing, established name. Employers and grad schools know what the University of Houston-Downtown is, having been around for 35 years. If it truly were a confusion issue, wouldn't the logical thing be to also change the names of UH-Clear Lake, and UH-Victoria? You may say they're too far away to warrant confusion, but they still have "UH" in their names, which is the main point being pushed by those in favor of the name change. I don't like the crop of new names at all, "Texas Southeast University" could cause confusion with TSU (which the UH system probably wouldn't like). South Texas just sounds like a regression, as UHD was called South Texas College prior to 1974. Might as well sell the name to the highest bidder, and welcome folks to "Centerpoint Energy University."
  20. The History Channel must really like Houston. Tonight on the 11:00pm episode of Modern Marvels, they did a story on how the Houston Chronicle runs both a conventional paper and electronic newspaper. They had people speculating about how one day, the traditional newspaper will be obselete, and even showed some behind the scenes views of the Chron.
  21. Maybe those nutria rats are the new food source for gators at the Houston Zoo. I know the zoo in NOLA uses nutria rats for that very purpose. It's a good deal, a free food source for the gators located just steps away from the entrance, how much money would they save?
  22. I think those are his kid's feet in that photo. BTW- Nice avatar photo. It's nice to see folks who aren't afraid to use their real photo as an avatar.
