  1. Cinnamon? So that's what gives the butter that special kick of flavor. I could get full off of their sweet rolls and butter alone.
  2. Your argument for changing the name of UHD will be non-valid as long as the names UH-Clear Lake, UH-Victoria, University of Houston System at Cinco Ranch and University of Houston System at Sugar Land continue to exist. Unless the names of the other campuses are changed to names eliminating any connection with UH, there will ALWAYS be somebody referring to UH as "UH-Central" or "UH main campus". You cannot blame this problem solely upon UHD. Well, I didn't know that UHD was dirtying up the reputation of UH. Please, tell me what image UH "derserves".
  3. I'm a student there, planning to graduate in May 2009. Everyone in Houston knows where UHD is and doesn't get it confused with UH. It's been that way for 35 yrs, why does an outsider (Renu Khator) all of a sudden feel the need to change it? http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nb/hei...ws/5953919.html
  4. That would explain why the TxDOT signs on 288 near Southmore and near Holly Hall said something earlier this week to the effect of "Delays at FM518 exit, use FM2234 instead".
  5. John Hope Franklin had a big role in Brown v. Board of Education, marched with MLK, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995. He will give a free lecture on Friday, 8/1 at 10 a.m. at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. This is a good opportunity to see a living legend (he's 93 years old). For more info, call 713-639-7300
  6. Oh you stare, JUST YOU STARE, lol. Then ol' Otis will speed over to you on two wheels in his golf cart. "Git out-ta da center here ol' boyo, starin' at the pretty missy poos like you fresh out-ta da jail house! WOAH, that missy poo full of fruit, melons AND an apple bottom! I mean, git out, you bout to git me fired! Got me thinkin' bout my old creepin' days!"
  7. I caught a peek at the span structure the other day. It's a traditional bridge deck, from the look of the architecture and the little engravings on the pillars, it looks like TxDOT might give the bridge the old "Gulf Coast Colors" combo. Though I could be wrong. This is the color scheme I'm talking about.
  8. There's also a new hike and bike bridge over the Brays right next to the Ardmore St. bridge. It runs when the old Columbia Tap RR bridge was. They placed the bridge deck on top of the columns just a few days ago.
  9. Sounds like an extension of Selma or Cecil St, I've seen the work, but I can't remember which one it is. Those two streets run parallel to each other and to Fannin south of the bayou, AND, for pop culture references, both streets ironically have the same names of two "Simpsons" characters, not that anyone except for me would notice.
  10. As a Christian, I think the money spent on these crosses could be better spent on community outreach programs. Is a giant cross going to feed the homeless, drive the elderly to their doctor's appointments, or host gospel skate night? Yes, there is such as thing gospel skate night in some communities. keeps kids from doing other things. And no, they're not skating off of tunes by the famous Blind Boys of Alabama (that sure would be interesting to see, lol).
  11. Sunday, July 6, 2008, the Houston Chronicle will be sponsoring a Houston Symphony concert at Jones Hall. Cost is one dollar. The conductor will be Grant Llewellyn, and the special guest will be the 1st place winner of the 2008 Ima Hogg Young Artist Competition. Get tix here: http://www.houstonsymphony.org/ticket/prod...=2163&src=t
  12. A lot of the sloping in the neighborhood can be attributed to the fact that the bayou was straightened in the 1920s and again in the 1950s, and the slopes are its old banks. The original path of the bayou can be seen north of N. MacGregor just east of 288 in what used to be called Crescent Island, at the site of the old Wright Morrow mansion beyond the metal guardrail on the right hand side of S. MacGregor just before the curve, Parkwood Park, to the northwest of the intersection of N. and S. Parkwood, and in the yards of the houses located at Rio Vista and S. MacGregor. Go down a little further past Scott on S. MacGregor and you can still see the original channel on the left hand side between Kuhlman and Oakcrest.
  13. That lady's clearly crazy. Doesn't fit the description of anyone that I know of who lives in this neighborhood, sounds like someone from the other side of OST.
  14. What's funny is that UT tried to encroach further into the neighborhood with a psychiatric outpatient center earlier this decade. I remember the man in the blue shirt in the film suggested if the community owned the land, that wouldn't have happened. Well, in this case, UT claimed "imminent domain" and bought the Wright Morrow property on S. MacGregor. The 5 story complex would have been an eyesore and brought more traffic into the neighborhood. We fought it, because there were a few well documented incidents of escaped hospital patients running though the neighborhood, including one who swam across the bayou twice and got arrested almost in our back yard. UT finally relented and decided to place the property in the TMC "proper". It was a double edged sword though, UT sold the property to a developer who tore down the historic Wright Morrow mansion and started construction on some "luxury townhomes" starting at $500,000. In the past few months however, construction on the units has stalled, leaving an unsightly, weed grown property surrounded by a chain link fence containing freshly laid roads and water lines sprouting out of the ground.
  15. Yeah, Shelia Jackson Lee isn't as loved by the community as much as she thinks she is. Word on the street is that someone's planning to run against her, possibly former Congressman Craig Washington who lost his seat to her in 1994.
  16. Yes, it was VERY interesting. I saw a few people in the film that I knew, including relatives, and kept on trying to see if my house was in it. Seems like every time they'd do a pan of the houses in the vicinity of mine, they'd cut into the pan right at the point that mine would up, show someone talking, and then cut back into the pan as if there was no interruption of the pan and show the houses immediately after mine. Where did you and Niche sit? I was on the last row in the center section.
  17. I'm guessing it was WWII vets. Lots of affordable housing was built in the post war period to accomodate the "baby boom" of 1946-1964.
  18. Anyone from the messageboard planning to go check out the screening at MFAH this Sunday? Might be a nice opportunity for an unofficial HAIF meet, or at least a HAIF: Washington Terrace/Riverside Terrace/Riverside area members meet.
  19. That's because they expand freeways and leave the interchanges as-is. Over the past 20 years, they've expanded freeways and kept the same old interchanges there. The Southwest Freeway was originally expanded in 1991, the interchange was basically left in its 1962 configuration. The North Loop between the North and Eastex Freeways was expanded this year AND the North freeway was expanded in 1984, but the interchange is still in its 1961 (left lane entrances onto 610) and steeply banked ramp configuration. Ever wonder why an expanded freeway is all nice, 6 lanes in each direction, then when you go under 610, it's only 3 lanes? Partly attributed to lane balance because some of the mainlanes become exit ramps, the other because it would mean the entire interchange would have to be rebuilt to accomodate the extra mainlanes going under 610 (ie: I-10W/I-610 rebuild), or shoulder lanes would have to be restriped into mainlanes, something TxDOT doesn't like to do around these parts much. Though I suppose, it could be worse.
  20. A copy of the "Urban Dictionary" from urbandictionary.com? Maybe it's like The Simpsons, they'll replace a section with a "Build Your Own Sundae Bar" or turn the "Young Adult" section into a red light "Adult" section, complete with pervs in trenchcoats.
  21. Here's the link where you can buy tickets. http://www.mfah.org/films.asp?par1=1&p...mp;currentPage=
  22. On the comment about there being no same sex couples with children in the neighborhood, I saw a lesbian couple last week at the Local Voting Precint Caucus Convention with their son. Perhaps there are more, but we do have such families here in our "hood".
  23. Also check out Riverside/77021. We have not had the townhome intrusion on this side of the bayou yet, and we also have a few neighbors who are the same demographic as you (GWM), and they must like it, as they've been here over 20 years.
