  1. Right! Even Lincoln saw fit to bring back the storied Continental name. The new guy wants to distance Cadillac from the days when the flagship was based on a stretched Caprice platform. But, there's something about the old names. It's not like anyone suggested bringing back Cimmaron. Plus, he knows the value of a name. Allegedly, the Escalade won't follow the XT# naming scheme that SUVs will adopt in the coming years.
  2. I'm on my phone and accidentally clicked the full version button for the forum. I don't see a button or link to get back to the mobile version. What am I missing?
  3. I think the CT8 name will be reserved for the grand flagship that's coming around 2020. The CT6 is the flagship for now. While it's not exactly the grand S-class competitor that many were hoping for, it's much better than the preceding flagship, the FWD XTS.
  4. Nah. A Chron.com comment section would accuse high speed rail as a socialist plot by Obama to take away our cars and Bibles and make us ride on trains with gay couples and welfare recipients.
  5. So says the designer who works for the automaker that ripped off the Continental name from Lincoln in 1952, 13 years after the first Lincoln Continental rolled out.
  6. The 2016 Lincoln Continental concept is one sexy beast. http://jalopnik.com/2016-lincoln-continental-concept-this-is-it-1694455362 The 2016 Cadillac CT6 will debut later today (March 31). I guess it's official. 2015 marks the return of the big, American luxury cruiser.
  7. I wish I had read this thread before I went to Messina Hof in Bryan today. Going there wasn't too bad. They had the 290 mainlanes closed and diverted traffic to the feeder while they did some sort of work that necessitated the closure of the mainlanes at the Grand Parkway. It was the return that was bad. They forced eastbound traffic off at Becker Rd. I planned to take the Grand Parkway to the Westpark Tollway to avoid the closure further ahead at 610, and thought I could access it from the feeder road. Lo and behold, there's no feeder road connection, and there was access to the Grand Parkway ramp available, but I realized it only upon passing it up and spent 30-45 minutes crawling to Mason Rd. Something told me to take FM359 from Hempstead to Brookshire to catch I-10 or go down further to Fulshear and cut over on 1093/Westpark Tollroad, and I should've listened to that voice.
  8. The 11.9 mile section of US 59 inside the loop was added to the Interstate system yesterday as I-69. I-69 in the Houston area is now a complete route through Harris County and extends a total of 75 miles from Montgomery County, through Harris County, and into Fort Bend County. http://www.i69texasalliance.com/
  9. My older brother worked there when he was a student at Lamar HS.
  10. Looking at historic aerial views and old topographic maps on historicaerials.com, there was a small creek, bayou, or drainage ditch that ran roughly parallel to Antoine between present day Long Point and I-10. It was filled in sometime in the 60s or 70s. You can see where it used to run here: https://www.google.com/maps/@29.798894,-95.475376,3a,66.4y,4.82h,71.48t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1s_54wa6LhYxr_A_8jUtxK-Q!2e0
  11. We used to go to the one in Meyerland a lot. Then it became a music store whose name I've forgotten, I think it was called Media something, then it was a Blockbuster Music. I think that part of the Meyer Park shopping center was demolished a few years ago for redevelopment.
  12. Now, if they could do something about that dip on N. MacGregor just east of Cambridge. You can see marks in the pavement where vehicles have bottomed out. It's a relatively new road, too. It opened in 2009 or 2010, but I have observed the dip getting deeper and deeper. On Google Earth, you can see the first bottoming out marks appearing in 2011.
  13. There are things similar to what Avenue CDC is doing on the Northside happening here in Third Ward, too. We have organizations working to reach those goals like the OST/Almeda Corridors Redevelopment Authority and the Greater Southeast Management District. We have the Village at Palm Center mixed use development coming up just down the street at Griggs and MLK, and that had a lot of community input to ensure low income people would have a place to live and revitalize the area at the same time. There are lofts popping up at the intersection of Griggs and OST that may not be low income, but they will improve the look of the intersection. The community has organized to bring the changes we want, but it's been a seemingly slow process. On Scott at Corder, there's a Pyburn's food market being built, and that came about largely as a reaction from community members who want more grocery stores in the area. I'm wondering what grocery store will open up at this new strip center. Will they close down HEB and put a Joe V's there? I doubt another Pyburn's would be placed so close to the one coming up on Scott at Corder.
  14. Cambridge St. between OST and Holly Hall is finally getting the attention it's deserved over the past 20+ years that I can remember it having a pothole problem. An informational meeting will be held today, March 12th from 7 to 8:30 pm at City of Refuge Evangelical Church, located at 3150 Yellowstone Blvd. Construction is scheduled to start on Monday, March 16, 2015. I don't have a link, I just received it in an e-mail announcement from District D Councilman Dwight Boykins.
  15. #2: The HEB at S. Braeswood and Chimney Rock is an older Pantry style store that first opened in 1992. Maybe that one would be more to your liking. #7: Did you see the cracking part of the retaining wall being held together by vertically mounted pieces of guardrail? I guess that's TxDOT duct tape. #8: There are chainlink fences on the arch overpasses over US59 between Shepherd and Montrose, but they are painted black and seem to blend in moreso with the bridges than the 288 chainlinks. Maybe when they start construction on 288 soon, it'll include a new coat of paint for the overpasses and black paint for the current chainlink fences. #10: Maybe I'm giving Public Works too much credit, but maybe, just maybe, they'd just discovered the damage shortly before you happened to come upon it and the barrier was newly erected. But, I have been PW not do much to streets that are going to be torn up and rebuilt soon, and I think that stretch of Bellaire is going to be widened and reconstructed. N. Main in front of the UHD Business Building was horrible when I was there from 05-09, but PW didn't do much to fix it since it was going to be completely rebuilt in a few years for the light rail extension. #13: Bayou Park Apartment Homes on Memorial next to St. Thomas has a convenience store, though it looks to be easily accessible by the public.
  16. Then what do you think would improve the area? Doggie daycare center? Salata? Smoothie King?
  17. I remember when it opened in 1996. I don't think it was a Pantry though. It seemed bigger than the Pantry that I'm most familiar with on S. Braeswood and Chimney Rock. The Third Ward HEB was different than other HEBs, certainly much different than the HEB near my brother's place when he lived in Sugar Land. The Third Ward HEB felt hostile and sterile inside. For one thing, you couldn't take your shopping cart to your car. Large concrete pylons kept shopping carts from leaving the store. Certain items in the pharmacy were behind lock and key, which is perhaps commonplace now, but not in 1996. You had to bring your car to the front of the store and load the trunk from there, presumably to discourage people from taking the shopping carts off the premises. I also remember there being an odd arrangement of the aisles so there would be only one entry point to the checkout lanes. It was very inconvenient and was one of the reasons we didn't shop there even though it was the closest grocery store. I've only been there once since that one shopping trip, and it was for a church scavenger hunt. Other shoppers didn't like the security measures, either. They felt it was insulting, and they didn't like the fact that security cameras were visible everywhere. The HEB public affairs coordinator apologized to one shopper who made such a complaint and said it was necessary because their Pantry stores operated on a tight margin and tight security measures were needed. Councilman Jew Don Boney felt that the store wasn't hostile, just high tech. Since then, I think shopping carts are allowed in the parking lot. They have technology now that will make the cart's wheels inoperable if they leave the store premises. An HEB gas station has been built in the parking lot, but I still don't shop there. I'd rather go to Kroger on OST or even make the drive to the HEB on Buffalo Speedway at Bissonnet.
  18. What's the matter with those businesses if it's what the community wants or needs? If that's what they want and it creates more business owners, good for them.
  19. My mom was in the first class of freshman to use the outgoing building when it opened in 1959. Washington was originally located in Fourth Ward, and she was looking forward to riding the bus with her friends to school from Independence Heights to Fourth Ward, but the new building opened up just walking distance from her house.
  20. He wanted to run in 2009, but didn't.
  21. In July 2013, a guy in a truck slammed into my parked car and knocked it into a another car in a parking lot, totaling all 3 vehicles in the process. HPD came out and ticketed him for failure to maintain speed.
  22. Lexus was kicking butt in the 90s and 00s when it came to customer service. I don't know where they stand now. I just remember how cool it was to me as a little boy to go to the Lexus dealership when my mom's LS400 needed service and finding a soda dispenser in the waiting area. Mercedes-Benz didn't have that. You received a cup of coffee and a stern lecture on why the 350SDL was the unsurpassed combination of efficiency and luxury. MB didn't start catching on until the late 90s, and that's part of the reason why Lexus came in and started eating MB's lunch in the early 90s. When I worked at a certain Clear Lake based Mercedes-Benz dealership a few years ago, they had a lady who worked in the customer waiting area. She would serve sodas, make smoothies, and serve desserts to the customers. They've since changed owners and I don't know if she's there anymore, but I know she was the reason why a lot of people would bring their cars there for service. That's what luxury buyers expect with customer service. They want the extra mile and everything short of having their a... I mean nose wiped. They want more than a Sparkletts tank and a coffee machine.
  23. The 2016 Cadillac CT6 made its first appearance in a commercial during the Oscars pre-show tonight. http://jalopnik.com/cadillac-ct6-this-is-it-1687358640
