  1. Absolutely. Just do the paperwork, etc. and there's another chunk o' Houston. Not quite that simple, but if the CoH wants to annex, there's not much that can be done. I think the best thing Houston can do in general is maintain the right to veto incorporations within Harris County to preserve teh ability to annex in the future. Houston has to avoid ending up like Dallas, where the city can't grow because of the inforporated communities that surround it.
  2. Given the trend in favor of high density cubicles over offices, with the corridors along the windows, there probably won't be too many corner offices. I do wonder if XOM will move the Chemicals office on Eldridge to the new location, and what the impact on the Brookhollow campus will be.
  3. The building at Austin and Elgin was much better looking before it was painted white some time between 1999 and 2002 (I don't remember exactly when that travesty occurred). It will be interesting to see just what the new owner does for renovations.
  4. To me, a better indicator of criminal activity than murders is the number of robberies, burglaries, assaults, etc that occur. The term "Bloody Fifth" predates the 80's
  5. Anyone know if there's a state statutory limit on the fines a city like Houston can impose for an ordinance violation?
  6. You need to get a better CPA. One who isn't totally consumed by their own way of doing things. All they really needed to do was check your work, then enter balances in whatever system they use. Quickbooks works well, I've set up a few companies and a social club on it. If I had my own company, I would probably use Quickbooks. I've never been that impressed with Peachtree - it's harder to set up than Qucikbooks, and I wasn't impressed with the support.
  7. There are programs for free care based on income, etc. The County provides emergency care without looking at your ability to pay, but will come after you later if you have an income that exceeds the thresholds.
  8. Your beliefs go against all fo the studies on the topic, which indicate that talking on a cellphone while driving is as dangerous as drinking and driving. This doesn't mean that everyone is going to be equally affected, any more than everyone who blows 0.08 is equally affected. It does mean, in general, that we're all safer if we don't allow the use of cellphones at all while driving. You may consider that an infringement on your liberties. I don't, because you can still pull to the side of the road and talk. As for passengers in the car, the studies show that while they are a distraction, the impact is small compared to cellphones.
  9. A total ban on cell phone use while driving would be better, with massive prison time for anyone who causes an accident while using one (maybe not prison, but some major penalty). The bad driving caused by phone use is getting ridiculous. Hang up and watch the road! I'm getting tired of a) Near misses caused by drivers gabbing away on some inconsequential matter Drivers gently weaving between several lanes while talking on the phone c) Drivers going 30mph one minute on the freeway, then speeding up to 65 then back to 35, all while having a phone stuck to their ear Kind of a pet peeve of mine...
  10. The Mobil Pipeline transaction was to grant a pipeline easement across the property - the ownership remained the same while Mobil paid for the right to route a pipeline through the easement. I saw the Carrie Marcus Neiman items. Those had to be for her estate, because she died in the 50's.
  11. The Harris County Clerk property records show the property being sold by Lawrence E Marcus to Henry A Sauer in February 1976. There are a number of transactions after that.
  12. That's a 47 acre tract owned by Bluesky Commercial. Looks like it's been a long time since the place was occupied as it's been owned by a string of real estate companies for some time. HCAD has the house date as 1940. You can find it on HCAD account 0470900000001. I found the property by finding a nearby address on W Little York, plugged that into HCAD, went to the associated maps and found the account number on the map. Same company owns the properties on Hwy 6 just East of the tract with the house. Blusky appears to be HQ'd at 1303 Campbell, the head office for Visible Changes. You can infer various things from that. Gotta love public records.
  13. Ah yes, the wanderers. One of the reasons we decided to move from Midtown to Timbergrove after our son was born. There were just too many weird folks around for us to be comfortable with him playing outside as he grew up, so we moved to a regular hood with houses and yards. The guys with head scarves and towels used to all be male prostitutes, I doubt that has changed. Complain to the police about the car with out of state plates if it doesn't move at least once every 24 hours. They may take an interest sooner or later. 2818 Austin has always been a source of trouble. The previous owner occasionally tried to do the right thing, but usually failed. He still owns the new house next door.
  14. I have some proposals for Galveston and Bolivar post Ike: Everything West of the Seawall is taken by eminent domain to create a State Park. Everything between the North Jetty and High Island is taken for a State Park Tilman Fertitta is prohibited from doing any development whatsoever. He is free to demolish, though, as long as it's the new stuff.
  15. How about a decent bagel place as well? We could use one of those in the Greater Heights area.
  16. Be interesting to see pictures of the house, jus tto find out how bad the foundation is. I can understand the teardown only status if there is structural damage that isn't economically repairable, but shouldn't that be up to the buyer? There used ot be houses on Westview that looked like they weren't repairable due to subsidence on one side of the fault, but this house doesn't look like it has that problem.
  17. Webster between Gilette and Bailey, three blocks East of Taft. It's an open block in the middle of townhomes in the 4th Ward. A friend who was one of the first townhouse buyers near there told me that there were environmental issues with that lot, so no houses were built on it. I don't know that for sure, but it's plausible.
  18. The oil bust was more like mid-80's. My Dad took a package in 1985 and retired. I was laid off in January 1985 and never did find a job. Went back to school, got my degree, and when I graduated in 1989, there were jobs again, in the oil industry.
  19. I recall an article in the Chron or Houston Press that said the building was in terrible shape when it was an active fire station, and pretty much not economic to repair, hence a completely new building. The pictures with the story showed a state of disrepair that was sad, especially for the firefighters who worked there. Given the age of the building, asbestos is probably a real issue.
  20. Of course the house will be torn down. There's not too many folks who will pay $2.5 million for a 1600 square foot house and leave it as is. At least not in Houston.
  21. Zippy, I think you mean Strake Jesuit is near St. Agnes. St. Johns is in River Oaks. All of those are great schools. For elementary, St. Anne's at Kirby and Westheimer is our first choice. We are also trying for River Oaks Vanguard. we will settle for Travis or Harvard if we have to.
  22. The USGS sells aerial phots of various ages for just about every spot in the US. I've bought a couple of their 36x36 inch prints of false color infrared photos. Amazing detail on them. Do a web search for USGS.
  23. I thnk it's fair use. It's usefull to know what it is, as I can get ot the online Sanborns with my kibrary card. I haven't looked at that part of town on the Sanborns, and it looks interesting. You never know whast tidbit you will find on those maps.
  24. IAH - A pretty rinky dink airport with mediocre facilities for international passengers. Of course, that means it isn't as crowded as the others, which I like. LHR - Greatly improved recently. I flew through there in May and was impressed with how things are going. LGW - Used to be good, but construction is killing the ambience right now, especially the crappy bus between the terminals FRA - A pretty good airport. Lots to see and do, good duty free CDG - Worst airport in the free world. Used to fly through there a lot going to Africa. A really grim place with bad food and surly staff DOH - Doha is improving the airport all the time. The Qatar Air Premium Terminal is a thing of beauty. No lines, great facility, great free food. You ahve to be flying in Business or First CLass on Qatar Air to use. The rest of the airport is good too. A decent numebr of shops, and lots of places to sit. The new airport should open in a couple of years and should be spectacular. It's great flying in and out of a country that doesn't care how much money they spend on a temporary facility.
